Billy, I gotta say that even though I have been working trees since I was 12 in 1972 with my 4 uncles that were all Tree Trimmers, and removers. My father passed in the 70's as well, so I really watched all great men around me, for guidance and tips on life. I'm still working trees and I am so happy that I found you on UA-cam. I will learn until my last day. Everyone needs a great mentor in their lives. I'm proud to have gotten to know you.
I’m 72, and I’ve cut my own firewood for 45 years. I grew up in a big city and was ignorant regarding saws and wood. I’ve never owned big saws, but I loved making firewood from the first time I dared to try it. In northern Wisconsin we have an abundance of Oak and it’s phenomenal firewood. It’s a joy to split when it’s cold. I consider myself a novice, and it’s such a treat to watch your videos. Wish I learned from you years ago. I love watching experts who make an ability look so easy. Thanks for your videos and your life of giving/serving others. It’s is our main purpose for life. Keep rolling Billy-proud of you.
Be safe friends. Buckin doesn’t mention it a lot, but he did in this video. Even a sharp splitting axe(tassy in my case) will go straight through your pants and boot and sink into your foot. I got careless on a cold winter morning last year and just the falling weight of a 4.5 lb axe grazed off a knot into my foot. It was sharp enough that it barely bled, but had stitches and a 2” scar now. It’s embarrassing, but I’m very capable at splitting big wood and want to share with people to respect the axe🤙
My filing is so much better than 5 years ago just because I was afraid to put all my effort into filing one tooth and really concentrate on what you're doing every one learns and develop at different speeds . Thanks again 👍 Buckin .You always hit the nail on the head just nothing but love and kindness from Blacksburg South Carolina
Hey there eager beavers! The start of the notch reminded me of when I used to put three notches on 16 ft rails on 8ft centers to mount on corral posts. It kept the rails more solid with no rocking. Then I learned to make my notches wit a chainsaw. If a you pay attention, you will learn things. Especially from someone who walks the walk and talks the talk. Thanks. For sharing your knowledge with us!
Good video. Nice to see the big axe working again. Most of the competitive axemen in NZ use them. Just good to hear the voice overs Buckin, have enjoyed them for years. Cheers from HB NZ
Your commentary...voice overs, is the education, entertainment, intellectual connection and comedy that make me watch every video and hit the like button. Anyone can cut down a tree and record it...but there's no body like you.
As someone of the competetive scene, i competed for 5 years and still do on occasion, one thing to minimize accidents is actually bringing your feet in closer. Once you have a good straight swing, bringing your feet in way closer than you think you can will make it much easier to be accurate. Much love!
i felt hit by your words like the wood by the axe. you say ''honesty breeds freedom'', it has never been more clear to me than in this time of my life. unfortunately i always had to learn this things on my own the hard way. now i lost my freedom and even if i am at the beginning of my life i don't see any option to repair what i broke. i wish i heard your words sooner in life.
I love your voice overs when you take the time to do in depth explanations and tips especially! than you Buckin!! the angle grinder kerf cut made me grit my teeth and sweat by the way
Thanks for all the help and just general information on life in general i feel myself coming out of this dark cloud thats been over me for twenty some years God bless you Buckin stay safe
Glad to see your shoulder has healed up nicely, I tore my rotator cuff a couple years ago my greatest fear was not being able to split wood. I kept swinging until it fixed itself. Bet if I quit swinging my shoulder would be frozen. There's a ton of wisdom in the voice over I like them. Keep on swinging thanks Buckin!!!
Looking forward to springtime axtivities .... now that you're in the shwing of things. Have Rita design a new target since she broke the last one with her mighty throw. There's a lot of newbee greenhorns coming in now and they have not seen your dexterity yet. Always loved the Ax throwing. Gotta have younger shoulders to really enjoy, and you seem to have rehabbed better than most. All the best in 2025 for Buckin Billy and the Buckin Army of peace and kindness. 🤞👌✌️💪 Stay strong Stay safe and Be kind to yourself so you may reflect the kindness of others 🕊️
How many axes does a woodman need-one’s gotta ask the question?! Can’t stop a beaver from damming a creek and guess that goes for you and axes (and powersaws). Keep on choppin’ Billy Ray!
never slow down hard work keeps a person young as long as they don't over do it. always a pleasure w/ like minded people 👍👍 keep swinging safely buckin and God bless,matthew6:33,proverbs3:5
Nice choppin Bill. Shout out to Kurt S the Aussie bushman who throws one of those about as good as it can be done. His UA-cam videos are beautiful too worth a look
Wondering if you ever heard from any retired fellers or if those retired fellers heard from their previous generations about curved or bent ax handles for making an undercut or Humboldt cut. There is a Killinger video about a Civil War era framing carpenter's tool chest. It's like a tool tour. A little before the 18 minute mark they show a bent ax handle. You see 6 or more different handles. Buckin', I wonder what you think about that curved handle. The date stamp is Jan 29, 2021, I think.
The Blues Brother from the great white North, Buckin Billy Ray, have axe will travel. Oh yeah it is. My dad and I took down trees with an axe bucked them out of the woods with a pair of Morgan horses. For posts we would split the logs by hand and for firewood we cut it with a 2 man crosscut saw.
Brother you got to get the Camp axe of there’s. It’s my go to, but I would call it a work axe though instead of a camp axe. You’ll love the profile I’m telling you. Much love and respect
Buckin, about 3:20 (roughly) you mention the log is "up in the air" ie in span, or possibly cantilever... we cant see which. This makes a HUGE difference. If it's in span (supported on both ends) then it is NOT in compression at the bottom & in tension at the top. If it is in cantilever with only one end floating, then it's the opposite. Which is it? This is one of those things that every pro knows Cold and intuitively from 10,000 times doing it. But few amateurs will be able to intuit the forces until you explain it and then they go out and DIY themselves a few times. It makes all the difference with a saw, a power saw, or the axe. Potentially a life saver even. You're the best tree man on YT right now. Keep it up. Ps. From how the "right" end (your left) fell, it appears to have been supported ie on the ground (or whatever, hung up) off screen. This would mean the entire trunk of the tree was In Span (not In Cantilever) and so, in tension at the bottom not the top. Otherwise the off screen end would have fallen down. It didn't. Instead the middle part fell to the ground. Hence: span. Means, the bottom of the tree is in tension and the top is in compression. Right?? Another way to think about this is if you were sawing would it Pinch at the top or the bottom. Our grandfathers and 30 generations before them never got this wrong, twice, ie after the first time. But folks today, disconnected from the real world. That's why your work is so important. YOU ARE AN AMBASSADOR FROM REALITY. 🎉 edit: timestamp & thumb typos
Thank you. We are new viewers from Arizona . My maternal family were old Michigan lumberjacks .We are wondering if your well received comments on honesty were prompted by problems with it in your past life? Thanks again. Peace and good health to you.
Amen brother! 6:07 I work for a crown corporation and the stress is not worth the money. I'm a very honest human up against a completly corrupt bc corporation and system. It has been quite the fight and every time I stray away from the high road, the man upstairs puts me back on the right path. I just keep telling myself all the pain is going ro be worth it as I will be able to live with myself in the end
I may also be a Billy that bucks, but I'm not Buckin' Billy that bucks while he's Billy-ing. I dont think people realize how much balance it takes standing on the log while bucking!
That axe reminds me of a New Zealand brand "Tuatahi" who make race axes like that one you first used at the start of your cutting. Wondering if it's the same one.
The old timer who taught me to use an axe the right way would get 76 strokes a minute in any direction. He was close to 80 years old. They were bulls then.
Buckin your be kind take the high road I took today because a person parked so close to my truck I couldn’t open door to get in I was gonna go to a bad place but you’re words hit me hard and I walked away
Buckin, you axe may feel better with the handles shoulder taken right up to the head, you can then slide your hand all the way forward. Control is much improved, and it feels "faster" Look at how the Tua is setup. Just sharing thoughts mate, love ya. Cheers
I feel that the stage of life you are in is genuine, kind, and free. Something that money can’t buy. Connection to the world. Don’t know you but I do. Love you brother. Keep chopping. 🪓

That's a nice piece of handle!
I love my 36 grit belts when I'm knife making. It's a special feeling to remove metal faster than it can get hot
Something good about watching you work Billy. Always appreciate your philosophy and teaching. Keep em sharp and honest.
I enjoyed watching the chopping and your words of wisdom. thanks.
That is absolutely beautiful! Nice work brother!

Amazing how sharp that axe 🪓 is !! She’s a beauty
Only a power saw guy would grab a side grinder to cut his axe handle kerf. Loved it, smoke and all.

Really makes you appreciate the speed of the timber sports guys.
You bet
That's a good one. I was working on a Connecticut pattern Collins pre70s model with a grinder earlier.
Really enjoy your comments! It's good to get into some lumber with a good axe!
You’re a brute!! Congratulations!
Billy you are making perfect sense brother!
Can't wait to be able to swing like that
The words only mean something if they're backed up with action. Well said BBR

You about smoked yourself out of the bunker cutting the kerf with the angle grinder😂. Gets the job done though. Good stuff as usual Buckin'
That axe reminds me of a New Zealand brand "Tuatahi" who make race axes like that one you first used at the start of your cutting. Wondering if it's the same one.
Different company
@BuckinBillyRaySmith Aaaah gotcha, nice axe none the less!

Hickory mostly

Good chopper Buckin!
That grinding the kerf was tough to watch brother. I use an old hand saw with rip profile teeth.
good job!
Hi Buckin
God is love. So we humans should give him all the glory.

Nice axe.
I'm surprised when I look in Webster's Dictionary that the term "Eager Beaver" doesn't refer to Buckin" Billy Ray Smith!!!
The voice over is nice.
I had to tighten my Tuatahi a little. Love it but it’s a heavy axe.
