Thanks for posting this. I remember the match vividly. It was the great Michael O'Hehir's last commentary. A few days before Monaghan were due to play Kerry in the football semi final he had a stroke. R.I.P.

Thanks for posting the video. I remember watching with my Dad. Croke Park like a paddy field. 8,000 at it. Lashing rain. Great stuff. Tony Keady RIP.

Wow. I only found out about this match today. Hard to believe that there was such a small crowd for a semi-final but at the time it probably didn’t even look like a contest. As O’Hehir said in his commentary, the Cork people waited for the final and did not travel. A big upset.

I would agree with you there as well , hard to believe a small crowd at the match. It always strange that Galway hurlers had to play one match in those to get to a final, now sometimes they would play Roscommon hurlers in Connacht final, but was none event. They need to get rid of the Provinal finals altogether. Saying that as munster person.

Such a shame that when Galway beat Cork in 1975, 1979 and 1985 that they flopped in each subsequent final. To be fair, the semi final was their first game of note of the Championship. Sometimes they would play Rosommon in a Connacht Final. As a Corkman, I couldn't begrudge Galway. However, I can't help but think that Cork would have one at least 2 of the 3, had they progressed to the finals. We'll never know, I guess. It was great to see Galway win in 87 and 88.

They should have put Galway hurlers into Lenister long time ago, Galway hurlers playing Roscommon hurlers was a joke.

What a team that was. Should have won 85, 86, 87, 88, 89 and 90. Just weren't quite professional enough and inclined to be complacent.

Is it cork or Galway you are talking about? Galway were coming in 85...tipp under babs emerged in 87...Cork were in transition after 86 win and it was 90 before they re established themselves...

Given how awful the conditons were that day, the match has to go down as one of the greatest ever played in the old Croke Park stadium. How Galway managed to score 4-12 on that pitch is beyond me. And to think that Cork scored 5 goals and still ended up losing. It was the day that the great Galway halfback line arrived on the scene - Kilkenny, Keady, Finnerty. Such mighty men from the West, always to be remembered in the annals of GAA lore.
