"Mulan" is the latest screen adaptation of the story of Hua Mulan made by HK director Jingle Ma. Hua Mulan is a cross-dressing warrior woman of Chinese folk legend.
In 450 AD, when the dynasty was under constant threat from ruthless Rouran tribe, the Chinese army conducted a nation wide draft. A retired soldier named Hua Hu insisted on enlisting again to serve his country. Mulan, his young daughter, was intelligent and skilled in martial arts. But as a girl, she couldnt be enlisted. Unable to bear the thought of her father suffering, Mulan got her father drunk, dressed as a boy and entered the army to take her fathers place. In the army camp, Mulan met her childhood friend, Xiaohu, as well as gained the attention of Wentai, the battalion's Vice Commander.
Through the harsh military training, Mulan proved herself an outstanding warrior. She was courageous and unstoppable and was on par with the men. Mulan eventually assumed a historically critical role in defending the nation in a time of war. Mulans first real battle ended with a success and soon she was promoted to be the Vice Commander. Together, Mulan and Wentai fought through various battles, and their friendship gradually turned into romance.
However, the Rourans were getting stronger as their Prince Mengdu murdered his father and seized the throne. The Rouran tribe stroke back with a stronger army under the leadership of Mengdu. The attack arrived unexpectedly and the Weis army was significantly reduced. Mulan faced the toughest battle of her life. She had to choose whether to surrender her kingdom to Rouran or sacrifice her love for the sake of her kingdom
The focus of the movie is less about Mulan's accomplishment in battles; but her personal journey of self discovery to being a great general. Director Jingle Ma sought to amplify the greatness and selflessness of Mulan through the various self sacrifices and tough
decisions she had made for the sake of her country.
