My parents only had two children, my sister and I. When I was younger, I asked my dad if he ever wanted a boy. He looked me in the eye with the kindest smile and said "The greatest gift I've ever received is being blessed with two incredible daughters." The father's line in this trailer gets me every time.

Yeah, and in the animation, when the emperor bows before Mulan, and everyone follow suit, the music there is also the best.

What made me love the original Mulan as a child and even now as an adult was that she had to start from scratch, she trained and persevered through it all. This one is different, apparently she was born with it. Gifted with all the skills from the very beginning. Cant relate unfortunately.

I was trying to think of recent trailers I considered amazing and all I could think of was Mulan. This is such a beautiful trailer showing the story of Mulan joining the army to save her dad. "I am blessed with two daughters". As well as the epic version of "reflection". Simply beautiful.

Traditionally Chinese people only agree that having sons means the family continues existing, but having just daughters means the family ends in that generation. That is the difference between the value of daughters and sons in ancient China. Mulan’s father says “I’m blessed with two daughters.” He is against the traditional belief because he loves his family and thinks his daughters are no less valuable than sons. It is just the same as what Mulan does, which is loving family so much and would be against the public views to protect family.

It's true for our tradition too. When my father tells others that he has 2 daughter's they always say that it's a shame he doesn't have a son to continue his line. My mother cannot bear another child .
I'll never forget the day my father told a man that he is blessed to have his two daughters, right after the man said he felt sorry for my father. That was the day I finally love my gender. But still sometimes I feel bad for my father cause where we live it is a traditional belief that if a man doesn't have a son than he is not considered a man. Also if a woman gets married she should leave her family to become a part of her husband's family. So if me and my sister gets married than my parents will be by themselves. I may never get married to have family of my own cause I want to take care of my parents , in the future I'll search for a man who will except me and my parents, a man who doesn't care what others will think of him cause we have another stupid belief that if a man lives with his wife and her parents he is not a real man. But it's 2020 and maybe in the future things will be different.

the point of making the live action was to honor the chinese culture and their legendary poem.
Disney said that this live action inspired by both "the animated 1998" and the "ballad of mulan"
The animated vs live action :
1) The animated mulan used "Fa" as mulan surname instead of "Hua"(mandarin) but the correct one is Hua because "Fa" is the other dialect in china (southern china) which is cantonese that people in hongkong and guangdong use to communicate and since mulan lived in nothern china not southern china. (HUA MULAN = BLOSSOM MAGNOLIA)
2) the phoenix(feng huang) is a great replacement of mushu. Feng huang symbolizes graceful and both genders man and woman and it suits mulan character as well . But i think the way that the father said "the phoenix raises from the ashes" was reffering to a greek phoenix.
3) The loom . The ballad of mulan story starts with mulan weaving in front of doorway with the sound of creaking (which is shown in the 2nd trailer mulan) and prove that mulan wasnt tomboy at all she is feminine.
4) the imperial army coming with the conscriptions scroll which is both(animated and live action showed us)
5)the emperor who in ancient times was considered as "son of heaven" . So if he bowed to mulan and gave her his medallion, her status would pretty much be higher than "god" thats why they took it off.
6) mulan father was a noble war hero (has been told in both version)
7) the place where mulan lived in the live action its "HAKKA house" located in fujian province in china and not true because its not located in nothern china(nothern wei dynasty), so the animated mulan house was right since every buildings r different based on every dynasty.
8) in the animated mulan has a dog named "little brother" instead an actual brother but in the live action they twisted it to an actual human named "cricket"
9) the aesthetic side with the two rabbits metaphor.
When mulan riding with blackwind she finds out two rabbits running side by side and she couldnt tell which is female and which one is male because the 2 rabbits ran fast. And its actually symbolizes the gender equality with men and woman.
10) xiang lang (witch) - (the development character of the falcon from the animated) - live action 2020.
There is no witches in china but there is evil spirits in chinese mythology called "fox spirits" or the "nine tailed" and often take a form of a woman and has the power to deceive human with the practice of taoism which is what disney has taken that concept. Disney making this live action with the REALITY concept of life and the SERIOUSNESS of the war and still dont lost the magic that every disney movie has by making it different and AUTHENTIC .
11) the replacement of the name of shan yue to bori khan . In the ballad saying that the nothern invaders(turkic or mongols) called their leader as KHAN but bori actually was not the real name of their KHAN.
12) her comrades visit her in her village (has shown in both version)
13) the hair cutting scene . In china ancient times woman and man have long hair but styled im a different way . Man made bun and woman comb their hair and hair cutting was considered as direspectful and disgrace to your parents.
In the ballad told that mulan's identity has never revealed during the 12 years of war, she is the one who revealed herself when her comrades visited her in her village by wearing her ols feminine dress and wore the comb.

It’s not based on a true story is based on a Chinese legend and story. So it’s not accurate. Also there is different versions of the Chinese Mulan story, in many there is a witch that turns in to a falcon and helped the army fight. Similar to the one in the animated Mulan movie which helped the Hans just gain information.

The biggest clue is the phoenix, it's the Yin to a dragon's Yang.

I get teared up when the father said "i am blessed with two daughters" because at that time we Chinese are expected to have at least a son to "continue" our lineage whatever that is. Back then female baby abandoned or even worse.
I heard in China they should only have 1 child so they kill the other one. And sometimes they kill their daughters because for them women are uselss.

At the end of the day, most people are just not that cruel. They don't have the heart to murder their own daughter regardless of the rough economical implications. So while it is a problem (no matter how few), it's not as ominous as most racists think, nor as exclusive to China.
Comparatively, you'll find modern youth have a much more narcissistic and cruel view on letting their child die. Ex: Late-term abortion statistics.

Me too, when this guy took me to the theater to watch Frozen 2 this trailer popped up and when Reflection played I felt like my eyes were starting to tear up from all of the nostalgia feels, unfortunately I couldn’t cry because I was with a guy barely on our second date and that would’ve been embarrassing.
Jerry Goldsmith score along with Reflections should've received Oscars.

I consider both the animated and the live action really good movies. But I see them as two different ones based on the same idea, not the live action based on the animation. I think that makes sense
The only badass Disney ‘princess’ isn’t even a princess at all, it just makes Mulan even cooler :). Out of all the live action remakes they have done, this one by far looks the best and it isn’t even out yet. I hope this movie kicks ass. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies.

Mulan’s courage and quick thinking destroyed hundreds or possibly thousands of hun invaders. She saved China from an army, then she helped save the emperor from that army’s ruthless commander. Mulan is, realistically, is the most badass of them all.
The legend of Mulan is not about blind loyalty to an oppressive government and/or money. It is about rising to the challenges in life, taking charge of our own destiny and moving forward with courage. With Liu as the lead actress, how can this film celebrate this legend? How can this film ever do it justice or honour?

Am I the only one who absolutely loved this movie? I loved how it didn't try to be the exact same as the original one but rather realistic (maybe except when it comes to the Chinese culture. There are some bad mistakes). This movie was far better when it comes to a movie about a war, battles and love. The original is fun and all, but I love this one too.

I think it lacked character, and didn't present the Chinese culture as beautiful as it was in the animated film. My grandmother who lives in China said she hated the movie and liked how the animated film had more character and showed the beauty of Chinese women and how if they're not born strong they can become strong. This movie really made me sad about Mulan

its not a remake.. its a retelling of the Ballad of Mulan. Not the animation. The animation will obviously have some influence in regards to some scenes and score, but no, its not a remake.
I think what they might be mixing is the actual story of Mulan and their version of Mulan together. Because it wouldn't make sense to make it a story that's wholly new when it's supposed to be just a live-action of a movie that was once animated. And another interesting thing about like the real story Mulan is because there's no definite version of it. Because it's a folk story right? In so that might be giving them more Liberties to do certain things

dunno why a lot of people said that the adaptation is not good. like dude look at the details, must admit that I hoped for the musical/singing parts but all in all it's still awesome
as a chinese person, the details are exactly what makes it bad. the clothing is inaccurate, the settings are inaccurate. the directors tried to channel the spirit of Wuxia genre but completely missed the point of both Wuxia genre and Mulan(1998). this movie was a dumpster fire in a trainwreck.
I hate it for being a bad movie and trying to make a bad girl power movie by just giving her power with no explanation and just being good at everything with no challenge and also for pandering to the Chinese communist party
