CEA is "controlled" environment agriculture. Hydroponic can be horizontal or vertical as can aeroponic. Pouring water down the wall from the top is actually hydroponic, not aeroponic. Aeroponic uses mist, mist allows for much tighter control over the amount of water delivered and is much more efficient. Pouring a lot of water down from the top is less efficient (especially with regards to power use) as the amount delivered is far in excess of what the plants need or can physically capture as it flows down. The top plants will receive more water and the lower plants will be subject to exudates (waste products) from the plants above. This can be mitigated by a longer watering duration to ensure the roots are sufficiently flushed but the longer duration reduces the efficiency even more and increases the power use. 60 gallons of water for 566 plants over a 12week period equates to a teaspoon of water per plant per day, the daily transpiration of a lettuce is far in excess of a teaspoon a day. Without transpiration there is no nutrient uptake or growth.
