@@tianwong152 It is a real place. But unless your movie is titled "The Battle of SiPing", the city probably has little marketing power.
"SiPing Young People" could've been called "Youth Gang" and has the same marquee value. That's why I think the only reason for the city to be in the title is because the film was partially filmed there, and the people are proud of where they came from.

      Aye.
I'm not interested in the monster movies because of unrealistic and bad story telling. You can't have both.
The only film that got me through the end was the monkey king films.
I like the untamed Sandy, Piggy and 3 eyes guy. The ending was a tear jerking for the three eye guy film.
I like how the character building in that movie, until the end I realize the main character neglected his magical weapon, who turns out to reincarnated as a woman.

While everyone knows about Moscow and St. Petersburg third city that makes most movies - Yakutsk with population of 350.000 ppl, where winter goes down to -60c, and making movies in native language, managing to win awards in Cannes and German film festivals.

I love seeing localized culture in movies. Many American films go out of their way to not give a location, but when the story is intertwined with a place that has its own characteristics, I find that so much more endearing and captivating, even if it's not where I'm from. And when it is does take place where I'm from, that makes me love and remember the movie for years to come

I always have this theory: When a studio (especially Asylum) wants to make a low budget B-movie, they immediately think "Giant monster. It can be an animal, preferably a reptile or a shark. Specifically those two. And they have to be abnormally big for no reason or they're mutated. We need to make a giant monster movie, f the budget."
And that's how we got the Sharknados, the Komodo vs Cobra, and Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark movie. These titles are all real, btw. I have seen them, and some are way worse. The movies in this video have piqued my interest as well.

I watched many Asylum movies as well, but never enjoy them as much as I enjoyed Chinese B movies. This is purely a subjective experience and a hunch, but I'd guess making a movie for Asylum must've grind people into dust. Asylum movies may be ridiculous, but never quite as sincerely made as a lot of the films I talked about today.

growing up during the 2000s I always love these type of movies,y'know, giant monsters with bad special effects from either Syfy or Asylum, they're not overly long, and cheesy af but really entertaining to me as a kid, used to watch these all the time when I had nothing to do,Dinoshark,Poseidon Rex,Dinocroc etc,I actually watched 'Snake',dont remember much of the plot and characters ,but I had a good time, recently even Taiwan started to make some of this type of movies(thought I find them taking their film too seriously than I would liked)
if one thing I hope these Chinese giant monster films can improve is to have more crazier and creative monsters and go all out with it cos now they actually had the market and budget for crazy with it,imagine 'Yunnan Skorpion Crocogator valley雲南蠍鱷谷' or 'Mecha Ptero-Rex機翼暴龍 ' (maybe I should send these ideas to the makers of these films lol)

Recently with an appearance of a simple story such as "John Wick" and similar stuff I started to enjoy movies more because I miss the storytelling style. I miss cliche stories and simple characters so I totally understand popularity of these web movies.

Boy o boy, thanks for mentioning Siping Youngsters!. I spent my first 20 years in Siping and I was quite embarrased when Brother Hao kept churning out all these schlocks. Until last year, out of boredom I watched one of them and boy, it was pretty authentic local culture, stripped from most of the common propaganda, just an ordinary movie (which is a rare thing itself). It doesn´t really take itself seriously, is intentionally campy with tropes. Well, do you remember there was a time when TV drama series made in Jilin and Liaojing (马大帅,乡村爱情,刘老根) hit the market like bombs? The Siping Youngsters franchise is basically one of those drama series on steroids and more drama.

thank you as always for sharing this culture to the western world, especially that segment about people making movies about their very specific region/culture(and this can get reaaaalllly deep in china, i feel like a lot of people forget or just don't understand how big and diverse china is!) and "regular" people wanting to feel represented when going to the theater. These day there's a really strange divide that's growing, the industry side of cinema is eating up the art side, people get more and more alienated to movies being made, feeling like they should pick a side between "dumb super hero/action" or "pretentious artsy-fartsy", and feeling represented by neither of them. We should remember that what really matters is the aesthetic emotion, how we relate and empathize with a film, and no amount of disney market research or snobbery and contempt can replicate a good team of genuine, passionate people! :) So it's super inspiring to see that, on the other side of the planet, everyday people are making movies for everyday people to enjoy!

Just like the "budget" U.S. monster/horror movies with endless sequels, I think a more honest take would be that it's really a cost-effective way to help more starting actors and directors earn their stripes in a more budget-friendly manner.

I'm merely happy that there is a market where filmmakers can and do go wild, resulting in some derange and lovable movies. I watch a lot of bargain bin movies from the US and Canada, and this type of production isn't very common here. A lot of ultra low budget merely try to be intentionally bad to be a laughing stock.
I mentioned in the video, albeit briefly, that not all of the movies as gold. To keep the video concise, I didn't go into the negative aspect much. I hope this clear things up.

They may not be pioneering, but they're wildly inventive within their scale, fiercely local in their production, and DEFINITELY had an effect on future filmmakers, from Lucas to Tarantino and beyond.

Just watched Khepri today at your recommendation. It was schlocky and had terrible cgi but I had a great time! All the characters fit into an archetype and a plot we've seen a million times before but this was still super fun and easy watching in the background while doing my work. It was good the plot is simple so I didn't have to rewind the movie too much or focus on the english subtitles since I got the gist of the plot. Also the end game plot twist and the psa tlat the end took the cake for the cheesiness for me.

Most of this genuinely looks more interesting than anything China puts out as 'serious blockbuster' material. Movies like 'The Wandering Earth' can also only be enjoyed ironically for western viewers because of the absurd executions of action scenes and the totally over the top emotional death scenes and endless monologuing during tense actions scenes taking all the air out of them.
This, at least, is telegraphing: 'we're just having some fun here', which in itself aready makes this easier to connect with. I have no idea what the Chinese are doing with those clumsy, over-serious big budget movies. This stuff looks like fun; uncomplicated, unburdened by the 'producing by committee' that makes the official Chinese blockbusters often so difficult to enjoy.

But he meant the actor was portraying a rotting corpse full of cockroaches who think of humanity as garbage.

I wonder if this an ignorant argument, but it popped up in my head: stories of monsters have often been allegories for societal woes, but the monster being used as a stand-in for that anxiety which has also, very often, been used as a sort of way to discuss commonly known but taboo subjects (like how Victorian books on vampires were about sexual deviancy, or Frankenstein's monster describing the othering of people as the actual evil). In America, there was a huge uptick in 'worthless' horror movies in the 50's, 9 times out of then the story being al allegation to possible Russian invasion.
Is there any chance that some of these movies, besides from being wonderfully ridiculous and no-mind popcorn film, are also or can also be a way for people to express certain concerns they have either from the international- or the national stage, without being overt about it?

I would also add these type movies have always been really popular with kids. They don't need great acting, fine tuned scripts or flawless effects. Mainly because their imaginations haven't atrophied yet. Nor have they become world weary and cynical to the point their sense of disbelief is ingrained into their souls yet.
