    I wonder if professional dancers ever stop after say ten years, and think to themselves, "Why are we doing these abstract motions?" What are we saying? To whom are we communicating? Do we all agree on the subject and thematic purpose of this dance? Is there one? Why is the theater half empty? Why bother?"
    If I had exquisite talent like these dancers, I would demand that the content of a dance piece had logic, depth and clarity. I would demand accountability from the choreographer. I would demand references to literary works, or specific philosophy, or original cohesive thought, infused into the production, no matter how abstract. I would demand an arc of relatable action that the audience can follow, at minimum. Without specific, articulable cultural or philosophical references, dance like this is just mindless sandbox play and pornographic cheerleading routines. It appears that choreographers are at wit's end, at least beginning to play with props and scenery, on the verge of real, articulable thematic arguments in dance. That day can't come soon enough.
    I wonder if professional dancers ever have people come up to them and ask them, "What is the purpose of this dance? What does it mean?" And I wonder if the dancers ever have a pang of fear when answering, "It means something different to everyone." (A baby's dirty diaper means something different to everyone. How is your dance different from a random, dirty diaper without intended meaning? It's not.)
    Without specific logic, engagement and higher purpose, dance is tedious, repetitive, juvenile sandbox play. Clarity is key. Make a statement. Articulate it. Infuse the dance with high stakes meaning. So, choreographers, you're not urinating on a canvas. You're engaging in a high-stakes, massively collaborative artistic expression, with a defined thematic argument. Define it. Anything less is lazy, abstract bullshit.

      Thank you for your thoughtful appraisal. I am someone who worked in the arts for a large part of my life, mostly in Australia, and my observation would be that generally the performing arts in this country (I assume from your use of the word "diaper" is that you are in North America) are lacking in intellectual rigour. I would observe, again from first hand experience, that this begins in the education system which encourages the ease of the spectacular over the risk of meaning. "Sandbox play" has a place in training and work development but should never be an end in itself in performance. Further, I have always found this lack of content to be a part of the Sydney Dance Company's oeuvre.
