Hey Connor, What would you think about devoting part of an episode two baseball statistics? Give a basic rundown on the pitching, hitting fielding, etc. statistics that you like best, how they are calculated and what they actually mean, and why you like them. Which statistics does the Orioles front office favor and why, and do they differ from your favorite stats? I think it would be a good way to get us all ready for the early part of the season and the roster moves that the Orioles will make, and why. Thank you for an informative and entertaining podcast. Stefan
if Mateo can do anything close to what he did last April, that'd be a HUGE bonus for this squad. I think he has it in him. I think he gained a little confidence late in the season last year. Good at bats. Got on base. Scored a few key runs. hopefully that confidence will drag over to this season. Hopefully. Oh and I like Kjerstad hitting 20 dingers this season
I personally like Mateo also, I wish he could figure out his bat. If Mateo could just give us a .250-.260 Average with his above average defense & elite speed, I think he's an All-Star.
I feel kinda bad for McKenna. He has improved his BA every year. .183 in 21, .237 in 22, and a .254 in 23. I mean if McKenna can keep that .250-.260 off the bench, and find some power, he'd be a good utility outfielder. I was at the game he hit the walk off vs SEA in the 10th last year.
i agree. McKenna is a ++ defence in all three OF positions and solid .254 off the bench considering his limited AB's. to win games, you need solid defence in the latter two innings. otherwise why fuss over having a closer. Closer also need the 7 guys behind the mound he can rely on. Connor, you do a good job speculating, but it is the baseball guys like Hyde, Elias, and management who knows best how to fill roster.
To be fair, Austin Hayes was hitting at an All-star level when he was batting lead off, when he got moved in the lineup his bat suffered, idk why Hyde doesn’t let him Lead off, but I didn’t win 100 games so I mean can’t really argue his thought process
Love your podcast, Conner, but I’m not loving your take on Austin Hayes. He does need to be more consistent, but he truly embodies the Orioles tradition! Reminds me of BJ Surhoff
I watched Jorge Mateo play centerfield last year. In one game he ran a bad route to the wall, turned the wrong way, and then made a haphazard jump. The ball either hit the top of the wall and bounced away, or inched over. The day before, Mullins had a similar play, jumped and reached two feet over the wall and saved the game. The point: Mateo is not a center fielder. Though I like the guy, like his defense at shortstop, and am amazed by his ability to steal, he has one weakness: he can't hit, and two and three, if I am allowed, he strikes out too much and has not been a particularly clutch hitter, like say, Urias. So the answer to the outfield is either put Cowser and Kjerstad out there at platoon players, which I prefer, or send Holiday back for a month or two of extra seasoning, and keep Mateo for a while to see what you see. Cower and Kjerstad have a big difference from Mateo--they can be, or are, great hitters with power.
Please explain why you think Cowser can’t play center? Everyone is entitled to espouse their opinion but after watching Cowser and hearing what the skipper says about him I’d love to hear your thought process on this conclusion. Love your content. Well done sir
If you aren't rooting for Kjerstad u have no pulse but the blunt truth, he is a bad fielder. And while the team showed the love for him by putting him on the playoff roster. But (at least Hyde) showed the lack of faith in Heston by not getting him an AB.......And note, Mullins went 0-12 with a few bad AB's. Colton Cowser is what this team needs ((OB%)) and Colton can play all 3 OF spots (thou Conner isn't alone in his doubts about CC playing CF)making him the 2nd best fielding OF on the team (Hayes covers less ground) and thus provides the NEEDED rest for all 3 of the starting OF's. Sure if Heston hits up to his potential, it's tough to leave him off the roster. But Mountys' splits show he is fine vs RHP, making it tough to get Kjerstad enough AB's (see the Playoffs) for it to make good sense to keep Heston as the current make up of the team appears. All that said, i would keep both Heston and Colton and move on from Urias or Jorge. . . . . It sucks, but it is what it is, u cut either guy today and they are fighting to make another team. You cut Colton or Heston and there is a very good chance they are starting day one and batting 1,2 or 3 for many MLB teams.

We saw how much of a weapon Mateo during that “playoff “game vs Tampa when he scored from 1st base.
Gotta make room for a guy Like that who makes pitcher and defense uncomfortable when on base

Kjerstad could have a breakout season between DH/RF/1B possibly another supplemental 1st round draft pick, but he's gotta be on OD roster.

Leave iit (the swing) to Beavers
Mullins when healthy is the best player on the team!
He may not be the best but he's certainly one of them if he doesn't get injured.
Sure enjoy writing off Austin Hays, I hope he has something for you 116WRC
Jerk, got it in for Hays
