    Very useful information. Thanks for the comparison. I was ready to pull the trigger on the 3 gallon model based purely in the specs but your real world comparison had me rethinking my decision.

    You sold me a 2 gallon sir, originally was thinking 3 gallon. Update: 2 gallon arrived and i love it. Cycles lot but it is ok since it is quick and quiet. I use it for 22 gauge fine wire staple gun.

    About 7 hours ago I bought the little one...one gallon. I used it for three brad nails about 3 hours ago. Can't be beat for the price point. I have a big compressor in the garage but this is perfect for my house use and very portable

    The very most important take-away for me is that either the 2 or the 3 gallon model can drive a big-nail gun.
    At the Maui Home Depot the prices are $229 and $259, respectively. I can see being tempted to get another 1/2 horsepower for only $30, but, if the big one is only marginally better at driving big nails, it's best to save the weight and go for the 2-gallon model. Furthermore, it doesn't draw enough amps to risk blowing a breaker.

    Very well done review! Regarding Makita's design - it is probably just me but I didn't like that the frame is welded onto the tank. This probably would not make a difference for most people and even for me wouldn't matter until the thing is ten years old and I go in to modify or repair it. Plus, during manufacture everything really has to go right on those frame to tank welds and I would wonder if it might make a brittle or corrosion susceptible region on the tank (since those two spots become annealed differently than the rest of the tank by the heat of the welds). As a comparison, the HF one I believe the tank just bolts into it's cage or frame so it can be completely dissembled and hopefully reassembled :-)

      Porter Cable, (for example), has label on tank to retire it after 10 years from manufacture date on tank for safety reasons. Maybe for you that's irrelevant but for most users it may be wise; or just being good little consumers.

    like someone else mentioned, your sound test isn't accurate. I'm sure the compressors being in a confined space, as well as being right next to each other and close to other hard surfaces, allows the sound waves to reflect and reverberate, thus contributing to a higher reading. It'll def sound louder being in an enclosed room as compared to an open jobsite

    • @mikebythesea45
      @mikebythesea45 3 роки тому

      The test may not be laboratory accurate, but it’s close to real job site working conditions. Inside a confined room, may or may not be 6’ from a person’s head.

    It did not loose air, the air in it cooled down thats why the pressure dropped

    Great review but I must wonder how all these compressor companies go about ranking the db levels. Not one of them has ever been accurate. And makita has another model that claims 58 db its ridiculous they would be so specific yet so inaccurate.

  • @Bob_Adkins
    @Bob_Adkins 3 роки тому +7

    Thanks for this! For the noise DB to be meaningful, you have to specify a distance. Sound decreases a lot every time you double the distance. I'm sure Makita took the reading at a standard distance of 5-6 feet, about like when you're finish nailing.

    • @108hindu
      @108hindu 3 роки тому +1

      I believe the standardized measurement distance is 3 feet. If I’m wrong I would love to be educated more about that.

    • @Bob_Adkins
      @Bob_Adkins 3 роки тому

      @@108hindu Not sure myself Marko, but it would be nice if the manufacturers specified the distance. There's a huge difference in 3ft, 5ft, and 10ft, so without specifying, it would be easy for them to fudge.

    • @scottvance74
      @scottvance74 3 роки тому +2

      In addition to the distance, you would need to have an anechoic test environment so that you're measuring the noise from the device and not reflections of the noise. It's not as straight forward as the presenter seems to think.

    • @CowsGoM3ow
      @CowsGoM3ow 2 роки тому +1

      @@scottvance74 Called a reference point. The 3 gal is a few db louder. Feel free to setup a anechoic test enviroment with a accurate db meter using Makita's unspecified distance. Lol
