      Denis Villeneuve has achieve the near impossible creating a sequel more than worthy of the original.

      The experience reminded me of the great films from the 70s in vision and structure and mood, similar to young Coppola when he was churning one masterpiece after another. Or 70s/80s Spielberg along the lines of nuance and excitement and the set design and sound of Scott's early work. Reassures me that I can still look forward to going to the movies and see a "big film" that isn't braindead.

    If Blade Runner was the foundation than Blade Runner 2049 is the massive tower that stands on it. This was a perfect organic expansion of the world, themes, and story. The thing that surprised me was how consistent it was to the first film but you can see that it has evolved. The acting, art, music, and pacing was perfect. For once a movie allows you time to let the major revelations and themes sink in. Where other movies will just move on after something major or meaningful is revealed. Also this movie didn't insult my intelligence. It didn't play dumb for the ignorant audience but also it didn't provide all of the answers to give the intelligent audience something to ponder after viewing the film. There is so much symbolism in this film to wonder and debate about. This film may of tanked in the box office (much like the original) but I know we will be still talking about it thirty years from today. I can't wait to see what these conversations are going to be like.

    The digital fixing of the Zhora's stunt double and the removal of the narration were strong improvements Ridley made, as well as taking away the false-looking sunny ending. However, The Final Cut would be only be a definitive "proper" version if Deckard's character remains human (or at least remains ambiguous). This could only be done effectively if the unicorn dream sequence is taken out!
    Ridley Scott opted to create a less interesting "Twilight Zone" twist rather than protect the more interesting story arc of a human passing judgment against replicant life yet falling in love with a replicant. The origami scene at the end is more poetic and fitting (as originally intended) as a "sarcastic jab" to Deckard - implying his relationship with Rachael is a total fantasy (like a unicorn). Gaff could have killed Rachel but had the heart to spare her - possibly under the assumption she will expire anyway. But in The Final Cut, the unicorn origami now implies... "Hey Deckard, I read your file buddy, and I also know the implanted memories you have" (meaning - Deckard without knowing it is also a replicant himself).
    In either case, the notion of how important a person's memories are, and how that's just one (of many) aspects that make us all human is a fascinating aspect to Blade Runner that I always enjoyed, and this element plays a *HUGE* focus on the brilliant and equally incredible sequel.

    From a selfish perspective I wouldn't have changed a thing about BR:2049. I thought it was perfect and an instant classic "right out of the box." From a more pragmatic viewpoint I wish it would have done better at the box office, but I suspect that would require dumbing it down to something more like a Michael Bay movie, and it wouldn't have been the same thing. I waited 30+ years for this movie, but an pretty confident we'll never see a BR3.

    • @Tony-1971
      @Tony-1971 6 років тому +1

      I totally agree. The theatrical version is the superior version because its unclear as to whether Deckard is human or a replicant in that version.
      The unicorn scenes inserted into the directors cut and final cut were a stupid idea by Scott.
      The theatrical version is definitely the best version because not knowing for sure if Deckard is human or replicant actually makes Blade runner 2049 for more interesting too.

    I hate this sequel. I watched and loved the original when it was first shown in the cinema in 82 and was blown away by it as a younger teenager. This sequel just doesn't do it for me. The scene that really spoils it for me is the one where Ryan's character visits the orphanage (which is just a rip off of Mad Max 3). Then there was that easter egg of the VW Beetle speeding past in one of the scenes which is an idea stolen from Back to the Future (where old cars are upgraded with the ability to run on cold fusion and fly). There are also spinners made to look like models from the 60s (one made to look like a futuristic version of a 68 Cadillac DeVille) The Spinners in the original film were futuristic vehicles which had no links with cars of yore and were designed by futurist/industrial designer Syd Mead. The original pushed cinematic visual and design boundaries (that is why it hasn't aged a bit in the intervening years and still looks fresh), this sequel looks like the many other dystopian Sci-fi movies that have copied the original movie since 82. The new movie doesn't bring anything fresh to the table, it just rehashes old ideas and visuals. Ridley should have done what Stanley Kubrick did with 2001 - left it to stand on it's own.

    I think he should have also raised the clear climate message, the broken world each individual now inhabits in the movie. Not only reflecting our own problems and struggles, but perfectly displaying to the audience, whether of high or low status, human or synthetic, all the individuals inhabiting this world live in a carcass, with no escape and echoes and phantoms of the past howling in the background. No message so subtle, yet with such power, was delivered in a movie.

    Interesting that this reviewer prefers the final cut version of Blade Runner. I don't like the final cut or the directors cut version because of the Unicorn dream scene that later confirms Deckard is a Replicant. Personally i prefer the theatrical version of blade Runner because its never made clear if Deckard is human or a replicant in that version, which also makes Blade Runner 2049 more interesting.
    Always loved Blade Runner (the theatrical version) and probably watched it 50 times since the 80's. Love the novel, Do androids dream of electric sheep. But I have absolutely no feelings on Blade runner 2049 whatsoever. It left me feeling totally numb. A bit like painting walls with a roller. You feel nothing and kinda keep wishing it was finished already.

    At risk of sounding like one of those people, I love it, but as a movie Blade Runner (1982) is painfully overrated, and far inferior to the sequel on virtually every level, even in terms of themes. It's one of those rare cases IMO where the sequel surpasses the original. It doesn't help that even The Final Cut has Ridley's dumb 'Deckard's a replicant' nonsense, from which everyone else involved in the production has distanced themselves, because to anyone who thinks about it for half a second it's an addition which unnecessarily complicates (I'd even go so far as to say ruins) the themes of the movie. It doesn't add anything; if anything, it subtracts.

    Don't compare Vangelis' ground-breaking score with a sub-par Hack like Hans Zimmer. For too long people have been gushing over this alleged musician. Listen to Vangelis scores from the original Blade Runner, The Bounty and 1492. Then listen to actual composers like Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Sir Alfred Newman, Elmer Bernstein, James Horner, John Scot, Wojciech Kilar, Wendy Carlos, John Williams and all the various composers used in Stanley Kubrick films throughout his career........And then come back and tell me Zimmer compares in any way. Zimmer's leitmotif is very simple: creating percussive sounds designed to explode visceral organs and cause permanent high frequency hearing loss. Well, mission accomplished.

    I feel like the original blade runner can only be enjoyed if you were born within its era, for a younger audience it's much less interesting. However, the sequel built upon the originals themes, interpretations and main plot ideas, therefore is better as a story. The sequel is also much better paced.

    Unfortunately the story line so hatefully shit on the first movies premise and the blatant open ending paves the way for a money making franchise rather than a meaningful continuation or conclusion

    My thanks to Sony to have naively gave lots of money to make that sequel a reality, knowing in insight the movie bombed at the box office .....Compare that to the massive financial and logistic support Disney gave to that abomination the Last Jedi was , it's a miracle Blade Runner got made at all ...

    my only issue with the film is the soundtrack which is literally just a noise, even just inserting the originals score into various scenes wouldve made everything feel more "bladerunner" and yes I am aware of the ending scene - which was so much better due to that said piece of music.

    • @Kaiyanwang82
      @Kaiyanwang82 6 років тому +5

      Stuff like Mesa and Seawall are not noise, come on. I do prefer Vangelis by far but this is unfair.

    • @unclesleven7256
      @unclesleven7256 6 років тому

      To be fair that Vangelis sountrack is one of the most iconic sountracks of all time, it's tough to stand next to it. I personally think: sea wall, mesa, joi and of course tears in rain are worthy to the soundtrack of the first the rest felt more like mood setting could have been a bit lighter and neo-noir like the first one but dicided to be more distopian and darker sounding instead.

    • @Kaiyanwang82
      @Kaiyanwang82 6 років тому +2

      I agree with the analysis but not with the conclusions, in the sense that I think is intentional. The 2049 world is the same but is more despoiled, and more ominous. I think the change in the soundtrack brings this home.

    Harrison Ford has got the upper hand in I'm not a robot he should see the Directors vision as the last word he didn't like being upstaged by the repliecant Roy Batty but mostly it's I'm not a God Damm robot he so short sighted he thinks Decard is straight forward human life weiry cop and won't budge glad he didn't try to make films at least I hope he hasn't he's a Wooden top wish they'd got different actor for Blade Runner

      Nautilus1972 Ridley Scott can barely make a decent film these days. For every film with the quality of The Martian there's are films like Prometheus, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Alien: Covenant, The Counsellor, etc. Keeping him away from the director's seat was the best decision the studio made.

    I liked it but as soon as the movie ended my wife leaned over and said "women don't get a good rap, huh?" And then as we were leaving the cinema we overheard a small crowd of girls fuming over the same thing outside. For all it's beauty it disappoints me that my lasting impression of Blade Runner 2049 was it's negative stir to female audiences.

    I'm a huge fan of dystopian sci fi and this was a terrible film. It succeeds on all fronts except the most important one: story. There are too many plot holes to count. Half the film is cliched dialogue, the other half Ryan Gosling walking at a glacial pace.

    Blade runner 2049...too long. I like long slow films, but this stretched a rather thin plot to ridiculous proportions, fifteen minutes in we all knew where it was headed, 40 minutes in it was quite obvious what was going to happen then we had a couple of hours of meandering around some existential ideas with some over stylised visuals to get to where we knew we’d end up about 90 minutes earlier. I love sci fi, I enjoyed this film but I fell asleep at least twice and had to rewind to discover that I’d actually missed very little. Good film? Yes. Overrated? Most definitely.

      Poxow ok, you obviously enjoyed it, fair enough. I really looked forward to watching it but found it dull, so boring I had to watch it in two halves because I fell asleep in the middle. It had a good idea but did little with it, looks to me like they were setting up a third film for the last hour or so. An indulgence on the directors part, it lacked the visuals I expected and the final confrontation was uninspiring to watch.

      Lord Fordo I disagree with the minority judging by how poorly 2049 was received. My opinion is unpopular with those who live in some artyfarty pretentious conforming world, but popular with people who just want to see good movies.

      NOLANISGODful Unless you could point me to a general consensus that proves otherwise, I believe it's quite the opposite. If you look at the metacritic scores or rotten tomato scores, both the critic and user reviews are fairly positive. Now if you're arguing that the majority of the unrecorded opinions are negative, then you have an issue, because that's not proof, just generalization

    • @NOLANISGODful

      I never said that the film was good because of the scores it received on metacritic and rotten tomatoes.
