    Super helpful. I liked that pattern and was hoping to try it. I am currently sewing Vogue 1859 and had a similar problem with the facing on the arm. Had to make a shortcut to get it to fit

      Giselle oh my gosh the armband on V1859 looks exactly like this pattern. Were your instructions the same as mine for that part? Glad you figured a fix. Thanks for watching.

    Hi. I'm new to your channel and I subscribed! I'm sorry you had so much trouble with this pattern. I am new back to sewing again and I am looking for inspiration. I know you had your frustrations with this pattern, but I'm glad you showed that because I don't feel so badly when I make my mistakes. Nice to meet you.

    Hi Nateida. Thank you for sharing this. I think that you have put the sleeve band into the armhole as if it was a facing. If you look at the pattern pieces, the armhole notch and the sleeve band notch go together (the opposite of a facing). The longer length (outer curve) of the sleeve band should be sewn to the armhole and the shorter length (inner curve) of the sleeve band faces your elbow.
    Nearly bought this pattern yesterday - I would have been scratching my head if you had not released this video.

    I was surprised that you didn't make a muslin but nevertheless it still looks nice , Maybe some Spanx would help. I avoid Vogue patterns because they are very complicated. I am not that savvy with sewing. Glad you were able to recognize your mistakes. Don't beat yourself up about it!

      Thanks so much Sheryl. I'm going to add the gussets to the sides of the dress to give some easy around that area. I loath wearing shapewear - LOL! Trust me, definitely learned my lesson about muslins. This style of dress for me really hadn't call for that in the past, but we live and learn - LOL! Thanks for watching.

    Nateida, I think the dress style and the fabric are beautiful! Kudos to you for taking on this challenge. We've all been there, you are not alone!! I don't like sewing up muslins... Would you consider a muslin next time? I understand that you made an adjustment on the front of the dress pattern. However, what about the back pattern piece? Whatever changes are made/drafting, all sides should be considered. Ironing strips of interfacing along the edges of where the zipper goes stabilize the fabric, helping to eliminate a wavy zipper. For the waist area that you've mentioned, what about a gusset on both sides? The print is busy enough that you wouldn't even notice the seams from the gussets. I think your dress looks good on you and is salvageable. I can't wait to see your finished dress. Happy sewing!!

    • @SewNaturalDane
      @SewNaturalDane  Рік тому +1

      Thanks so much Pat and I like that idea about stabilizing the zipper area. YES, I would consider a muslin, that would have exposed some things. I like your idea and gonna wait for our meetup to walk through it 😉

    Fabric is beautiful on you. As it turns out, all Vogue or others patterns don’t always run large or small. Some clues in the description are phrases such as “close fitting” or “loose fitting“ which tells us whether more or less ease is included. Also fit will change greatly depending on fabric selection. Linen does not give at all. Thanks for sharing your efforts. Learning from experience is a part of everyone’s sewing journey.

    So, so frustrating - I’m not an experienced sewist and that is why I avoid the Big 4 at all cost! 😂 I’ve always been told that gaping at the armhole is from you choosing a size too big and not doing a FBA. These patterns are drafted for B cups and I’m a DD. I get that gaping on every single pattern I make if I choose my size based on my full bust instead of choosing it based on my high bust and doing a FBA. I think the fabric you chose is absolutely stunning so I really hope you can make it work! I really liked watching this video. As frustrating as it was for you, it made me feel better knowing I’m not the only one who struggles sometimes. 😂

    • @SewNaturalDane
      @SewNaturalDane  Рік тому

      Thanks so much! Yes, I agree I think an FBA on this would have helped some but not that armhole situation 😄. Definitely learned a ton from this one. Thanks so much for watching.

    Also, I commend you for sharing your experience. And the confidence you showed in your clip.
    As for the sleeves. JMO
    I think the problem was the picture that they had for that step. If you would have attached the longer part of the sleeve piece to the edge of the armhole bodice (right sides together) you would be able to ease in the sleeve to the armhole.
    From the picture it might look like they want you to stitch the sleeve piece onto the bodice with the shorter part at the armhole but if you look closely at the model picture you can see that where the black part starts for the arm, is longer than the edge. That’s also why the armhole seems to go off the shoulder a little bit.
    I hope I’m making sense and it’s just my opinion.
    You did a great job and keep sharing great content.
    Be blessed.

    First off, I am so very sad this did not turn out!😢 It is such a beautiful dress, and I love the work you put into it! I agree you, probably should have gone up a size and brought up that arm sync. For those of us who hate doing Muslins, this is one I probably would do a muslin on! My question to you right now is, would you consider adding the gusset. Is it worth it? I just hate to see that beautiful dress wasted!

      Understood. I shared the video with my mom and we both watched it. She agreed that the sleeve piece might not be on the right side but my mom noticed that you may have cut the sleeve piece in the size 18 and didn’t grade it to the size 20.

    Thanks for this insightful video! It's good to know all these experiences are not yours alone. I want to ask if you altered the armband when you altered the bodice pattern. Considering you live in a warm climate could you have eliminated linings- or used a lighter weight fabric for lining. I also think a regular lapped zipper application would have worked better than the exposed zip.

    • @SewNaturalDane
      @SewNaturalDane  Рік тому

      Lynne great questions 😊. Yep sure did, I adjusted the armband as well. I don't mind it being lined actually. I probably should have said even though the dress was heavy it wasn't to warm to wear. Great point Lynne😊. Ohhh and I personally don't like the look of lapped zippers but I can see how that would give a bit more ease in the back. Thanks so much for watching.

    Hi Nateida, could you call Vogue regarding that armhole to to see if there was an error, or if not, clarification on the instructions? I believe it was Vivmom that said that she has called with questions. I’m not sure it was Vogue, but I thought it was one of the big 4.
    Also, loved the Pigeon Wishes buttons and the labels. They were are even more beautiful in person 😊

      Carrie, YAY, so happy you love your buttons and labels. Thank you so much for your support, I appreciate it. Oh my goodness, Nateida! How frustrating! You sure can persevere through. It is a gorgeous dress. This is just a thought, we have similar measurements, you and I, and I make similar alterations but I’m very tall and need to add length everywhere. I can get turned around in the changes I make and I’ve actually done this, I’ve cut the wrong size out to what I’ve altered in an adjacent pattern piece. I’m wondering if you cut those arm bands out in the correct size? Or, when you graded to the waist, did that somehow change the armscye? I know you are going to keep going and come out with a beautiful dress, I can’t wait to see it!

    wow, all the frustration, not good. I would have thought the zipper would be covered with the lining. And the sleeve bands look like they meet on the pattern at the underarm seam. Is it possible that the two armband pieces were supposed to be joined at the shoulder and later the armpit with one piece inside as a facing to make a complete circle? That would accommodate the length. In step 16 it says the un interfaced piece will be lining. Also were the armhole pieces different sizes between 16 and 20?

    Yep, why I do t sew the big 4. There just seems to be no consistency. I think the armhole bands aren’t sewn right side to fashion fabric. See how wavy the,y are? The longer outside edge goes against the fabric. Arm hole should go to smaller diameter on the outside.

    • @SewNaturalDane
      @SewNaturalDane  Рік тому

      See Neda, same here, that's what I was thinking, but when I turned it around before sewing it, it didn't seem to work. I'll have a final update soon.

  • @craftymystic4868
    @craftymystic4868 Рік тому +1

    Oh, Nateida! ((Hugs first)). The dress: flip the arm bands back on to the dress and topstitch them down, turning in a seam allowance? I’m thinking that was an illustration error, agreed, made no sense. And a pattern drafting error, unless the grading threw that off. Not sure to comment on that. Don’t know. But, I can sink my teeth into a frustratingly awkward sew and come up with some saves! I see in your eyes this dress will not get the better of you ❤. OK, And with more black, inserting some godets or similar to the trim? Or take it from the skirt lining and make it a feature of the dress, into a bit more swishy skirt with a bit more room (inserts happening where you need them!) - I’m amazed sometimes the details that show up when you look at a picture and don’t notice? Like the flaps in the middle, it looks like they are loose, but not really and that you tacked them down makes a whole lot more sense. Hope that gets the creativity flowing, and this helps, too, 🙏🏽. You inspired me today, thank you. 😊

      Thanks so much Deb for all the suggestions. Definitely taking those into account. I do have just enough of the fashion fabric to add to the side seams, which will require unpicking 🫤 but i think it will be worth it. Thanks so much for watching.

  • @bombcherryjuice2000
    @bombcherryjuice2000 Рік тому +2

    The sleeve look like it is more of a facing. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t go completely around the arm. Being a curvy woman it’s really important for us to take our measurements. The zipper is bunching because your back to waist measurements weren’t considered. I have to draft my own patterns because of my curves. On store bought patterns it’s easy to grade up if the pattern only goes to a certain size. These type of patterns aren’t really for curvy women. It looks like you adjusted the pattern for your front but not for your back. Also when creating fully lined garments you may want to go a size or two up, depending on fabrics used.
    I love watching you cut and sew. For a minute I was wondering if you sewed at all. I never heard you speak of not understanding what some of the patterns are saying which not uncommon. Also you never mentioned having adjustments issues. I found that odd. Also you never spoke of how long it took you to prepare and sew a garment.

    • @SewNaturalDane
      @SewNaturalDane  Рік тому +1

      Thanks so much for the suggestions. In the beginning of the video I talked about the adjustment I made to the back pattern piece. In the past for lined garments I've never had to size up, so definitely didn't cross my mind. Although I do agree, further adjustments to the back should have been made than the one adjustment I did make. SO weird right about that armhole band, still confused by that 🤔. As far as grading up a pattern, that's not something I do. If a pattern isn't within my measurements I don't buy it and this one is within my measurements but I'm thinking you are on to something about this not necessarily made for us curvy/full busted.
