I own a manual LSD IS300 and a manual 330i ZHP sedan. I love the character of the IS300, and with 100k more miles than the e46 it feels just as tight and bulletproof. I can’t seem to find a suspension I like that outhandles the ZHP in stock form though. Fuel economy and lack of fold down seats also hurt it. I really can’t decide which I prefer overall.
First of all, congratulations on your fantastic taste in cars 🤩 Second, thanks for sharing this very helpful insight! The E46 is a much closer comparison, and you have the added bonus of being able to compare manual to manual! Having them back to back, do you prefer one transmission over the other?
@@Automobros I’m super blessed to have been able to own many specials cars without having a large budget. I come from BMWs but have branched into Toyota over the past few years. Nothing beats the JZ for character and sheer durability. Both transmissions are stellar to drive, but I do have to give credit to the BMW ZF6 for better clutch feel, gearing and robustness. The short gearing of the lexus makes it feel more like an e30 to mash around the city, but it’s happy to cruise silky smooth 100+ on the freeway all day at 5k rpm as well. I am in a position where I should be selling one but I really can’t commit.
Really appreciate your perspective here! I feel like we are moving in the other direction, creeping from Japan to Germany! There really is nothing like a 2JZ, even without the turbo. And very cool to have the clutch/gearing comparisons! I would have a really hard time letting go of one of those two cars as well lol. Hopefully you at least get ample opportunity to drive them both! Damn this one hurt 😂 especially the mpg. The 5 series pro's list is massive. Even styling wise it looks nice stock, and it's a blank canvas that could go classier or more aggressive really easily. The only way I can see the IS coming into being a truly special car is with wayy more power - the LS swap is pretty well documented now, and by the sounds of it the mpg would be about the same with triple the hp....😂 imagine the mpg on a turboed 2jz-ge, not to mention the cost, and reliability.
Couldn't agree with you more! Love the IS so much but when you put it back to back with the BMW it kinda falls flat on its face.. and 💯 with you on the 5 series' looks too, it's ready for whatever you want to do with it! Couple all of that with the fact that they are cheaper to get than IS300s now, and almost just as easy to work on, the bang for buck ratio goes kinda crazy lol. Not to mention you can get them with a V8 from the factory! Omg I didn't even consider the mpgs of a turbo 2jz-ge 😱
