Since I didn't say it in the intro this time. I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC DAY! EDIT: Apparently the first find is a vintage banjo pick! How cool is that?
I'm just getting into metal detecting after finding some unique pieces by accident on my 1870 farm...I also own an additional old farmstead that dates back to 1840 that I'll have fun hunting, I have high hopes for that property as the standing on the property is an old victorian built in 1880 by a wealthier family. Can't wait for the spring melt.
Hope you get many more bucket listers you are my mentor JD i have been detecting for only 4 months and you have been my teacher on how to detect thank you JD. from Canada
Persistence.. Good work brother, that’s a beautiful piece. I’ve never found a heart version. Really one of those key finds everybody hopes for and few find. Congrats! The first find is an early Banjo pick.
Great hunt Jon, heart heel plate from ladies size shoe has been attributed to camp followers during the civil war as a way to find their tent in larger camps. As a side note, the description "hooker" came from the ladies imported from new Orleans to occupied Nashville for the troops companionship by General Hooker.
Excellent heel plate. I found a heart plate 2ish years ago. still one of those items i talk about when people ask me about peculiar finds ive found. Love telling the "ladies of the night" story. Nowhere is ever hunted out my friend. I learned that lesson in a big way just about 4 hours ago
@@JDsVarietyChannel lol gotcha. I found a 1919 class ring 10k. Sounded exactly like the 1,703 shotgun headstamps ive dug out of there. Just goes to show, you gotta dig it all

Awesome relics man! I’ve recently started to metal detect myself, my property being somewhat of a gold mine a old saloon boom town from the mid 1800s was bulldozed right behind my property an I came across your videos so I decided to go out there an right near a old railroad I dug about 4 inches down to a good signal an found a old crushed box of a “national biscuit company” now “Nabisco” from the late 1890s! That heal plate is on the top of my relic bucket list🤩 It takes a lot of patience to hunt a property with 150 years of trash! Love the cap gun too! Great video JD👍🏻👊🏻 Take Care and HH ⛏🎧
Hello JD I've been watching you for the last few years and I love all of your content...I just picked up 2 metal detectors for me and my wife when it finally warms up...got a lot of houses from the 20's-40's where I live....gotta do some door knocking! Keep up the great work!
That's cool! I didn't want to mention in the video. But there seems to be some credible stories that sometimes the ones with hearts were used by prostitutes, so you could follow the tracks to the local brothel.
That's a cool heel plate! I'm still searching for my first Nichols cap gun. Reminds me of the day I found a similar heart heel plate but even more worn. And just a few feet away was a cast iron cap gun! My oldest cap gun, circa 1910. Two of my favorite finds ever.
That's cool you found those side by side! A few years ago I found a small victorian water pistol. They used to have bladder on the end that you would squeeze (naturally that part was missing not being metalic)
The hexagonal lead stick( broken off piece) could be from the original plumbers at the house. The plumber would melt down sticks of lead to a molten state. They would then use that lead to make the connections on the large drain pipe fittings. Using a small ladle to dip into the vat of hot liquid lead. Oh yea.
Congrats on the heel plate, cap gun and everything. Great watch from beginning to end! Lots of good info! Did the banjo pick turn out to be silver? Have a good day- Char👍😊🪕
Nice Old Style video, JD - great to find that pretty heel plate - I almost thought the curious shaped item could have been an ox-shoe - maybe they were improvising - but I'm sure someone knows for sure. Happy hunting! ⛏🦘🐾👍

GREAT HUNT JD! I have two of those heart cut out heel plates,,1st one dog up at an old blacksmith shop,,2nd one 2 miles away,,and three or so feet away from that was a Cival War button,,so I dont no either. I would like to think it most likely came from cival war vet.
I always enjoy your videos Jon. Is that T2 you use a Special edition or Classic model? Also I find a lot of those slate roofing tacks but I think they are copper and not brass. I’ve been sorting my detecting finds into copper, brass, and aluminum bins to either melt down someday or turn into the salvage yard and when I use a file to check the metal the tacks seem to be copper and most spoons I find are brass inside. I heard you say copper spoon but think it’s brass. Not that important but I know you like to describe things as accurately as possible. Good luck and keep swingin’! PS. I’m also a JD and a Jon!
JD you're a good Kid. I appreciate your integrity... You need to carry a Spray Bottle with Water of course in the field. Please don't detect at night, that was annoying lol.
Jd, can you recommend a good, not too pricey metal detector that would be good for my son and I to go metal detecting in the woods and beaches? Doesn't have to be waterproof. Thanks for your amazing videos! We been watching your channel for years! The Backus family from Richmond, Virginia 👍👍
