Repairing a Geeni Duo Smart Plug

- ORIGINAL POST:
I decided to do this video only because I could not find a specific video for the problem I'm having on my Geeni. Even for blog posts, I think I got lucky when someone replying to a post of a similar problem mentioned the possibility of it being a Relay. My problem was not that (and I actually don't know what a Relay is) but it did bring to mind the thought of it being the fuse. Hence, the video.

Thank you so much for this video. I definitely appreciate it.
You are welcome! 👍🏽
Wow only took 4 friggin minutes to just open the plug! Best 4 min I ever lost
Hey folks. Please don't ever test a fuse by plugging the device under test into an outlet in this manner. The fuse exists to save your house or even your life in the event of failure or misuse. This is incredibly dangerous, and potentially deadly. Just off the top of my head: if the current is high enough to blow the fuse and you short it, there is a real possibility of badly burning your fingers.
All you have to do is get a simple multimeter, learn how to put it into continuity mode and probe both ends. The device under test does not need to be powered. If it beeps the fuse is not dead.
It seems the merkury smart plugs are just geeni plugs rebranded. This worked on my single socket merkury plug
It is, the Geeni app shows Mercury smart hub support Geeni
My Merkury SmartPlugs stopped working properly as well. Very informative video. I wouldn’t recommend Merkury because they stopped working after only a few months. I expected more longevity.
Yeah, I've noticed a lot of complaints about that online from many brands. I think they're just not meant for high amp appliances to be plugged in. I had my water heater plugged in to mine, so that's more obvious to me now that I know. I think things like hair dryers, fans, power tools, they'll all burn out the internal fuse. Once that happens, the only way to fix it is if you can find someone who can open it up and replace the fuse. Sorry about your Merkury. Glad the video helped.
I have TP-Link and Belkin smart plugs , hope they hold up !
Wouldn’t an ohm meter be a lot easier and safer? You,may have to disconnect one side. But my light on indicator isn’t even working, any ideas? I see your fuse blown but the blue light indicator works, mine is totally dead. I will take apart and see . Good video
If you're able to fix it, could you leave a reply. That's a new situation similar to when my fuse didn't blow, which I never fix. These devices are so simple, it might be the same thing...Thanks
Yes and yes. There is no need for the device to be powered in order to test the fuse. Nor should the fuse be shorted with a piece of wire. Do a continuity check with it unplugged.
Are there 2 fuses (one for each outlet)? The reason I ask is I have the same issue but only with one of the two outlets. Thoughts?
My Geeni had one 10A fuse for the unit of two outlets. I did have a unit that recently stopped working (both outlets) and the fuse was still good. I tried using a multimeter to see if it was a part I could replace, but my skills with the multimeter are subpar, so no luck with that.
stay away had three, all went same issue on all three, fuses.
My indoor round geeni smart plug doesn't power anything either
Basically, if what you plugged into it requires more than 10 Amps, it more than likely will blow the internal fuse of the Geeni. You can find the amp rating on your appliance next to INPUT of the power cable. It's usually right next to the volts it needs. That's the max it will draw from whatever it's plugged into. I had mines plugged into a water heater so I definitely realized afterwards that was too much amperage.
Do you know how to disarm the single plug?
Do you mean disable one of the plugs so there is no power even if you plug something into it?
You repaired a double smart plug. I have single smart plug, are different. I think I have the same problem than You. The green and blue led works, the same way, sound "click" when I order Turn On or Turn Off, but nothing happen with the apliance conected.
You used a knife to disarm, but the single plug does not have the lid flush with the box, they are a little different. We are talking about Geeni smart plug
OK, I think I understand. Even the single plug version should have a FUSE. If you plug something into the Geeni that requires lots of amps (see label on device). If it requires more than 8 amps, the fuse on the Geeni will burst and all power will be cut to the plugs. This is what I had to fix. I could not find a fuse so I soldered a wire, but I no longer plug high amp devices into the Geeni. Be sure to keep it under 8 amps.
I have problems with the language. I fully understand your technical explanations of the failure. I just want to know how to open the plastic box. My connector is different from yours.
