THE HISTORY OF KOREAN BBQ (GOGI-GUI)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 січ 2021
- Hello everyone! 안녕하새요 여러분 I’m Becky a half Korean half British foodie on a mission to promote real authentic Korean food, and the history behind it. In this video, we dive into the roots of where Korean BBQ comes from.
Korean BBQ has become one of the most popular forms of Asian eating in the world. But to truly enjoy the experience of Korean BBQ we think it's best to know the history behind the humble beginnings of gogigui #고기구이 - literally translated as 'meat roast' on the Korean peninsula.

We were honoured to be allowed by the monks of Buddhapadipa temple to film within their scenic, peaceful grounds. This location was chosen as there are no Korean buddhist monastries in London, and, it holds a special place in my heart as my parents used to take me there as a child to admire the beautiful temple and grounds.

very interesting
Thank you amca!
🔥🔥🔥
❤
I didn’t know the origin of it, this is so cool xxx
Me neither until I read a book about Korean cuisine! So fascinating
When I looked this as thumbnail, I guess it is kidding video.
But it was not.
I astonished and admired.
You nicely contained important time table and history to this short video. Nice job.
We Koreans are not sub-ethnicity of Chinese never.
We have culture origin of Eurasian Steppe (: Prehistoric Silk Roads).
Maek were barley farmers who settled amongst millet farmers
Korean myself but did not know any of that!
Same here I had no idea until I researched it !
Nice. Maybe 맥주 comes from the Maek. “Maek spirits”
Thank you so much, and that's an interesting thought I've never put the 2 together! Will have to do some research into that
맥 comes from the Chinese 麥, which means wheat, and 주 from 酒 meaning alcohol. Nothing to do with meat!
@@mountainsnotwaves7874 help me understand. The Chinese for beer is 啤酒
The Chinese for wheat is 小麥 (beautiful by the way)
맥 = 啤 . It does not equal 麥.
The first character in the Chinese simply means beer, not wheat. But this does not explain why beer would be called 맥. Why not call it 麥주 or 밀주?
@@astheskylarksings I wouldn't know the exact answer, I don't know Chinese. I got 麥酒 from a Korean-Chinese dictionary, so maybe they got it wrong somewhere and you might be right. But if I hazard a guess it might be because there's multiple characters that stand for the same thing in Chinese.
@@mountainsnotwaves7874 I considered that too. But 맥 was so specific. Who knows? I’m sure someone smarter than me already knows the answer.
:)
😊
I enjoyed some tasty Korean fried chicken from Chick and Beers while I watched that 😀
The best way to watch a video! 🍗🍺
It sounds like for a significant amount of time Korea was a Buddhist country (is this a correct assumption?) And if so, then Korea probably had more vegetarian or vegan dishes in the typical diet, than today's very meat-heavy diet in Korean today.
