The MK3 of SLA resin printers? Prusa SL1 and CW1 review!

  • Prusa are in on the high-detail resin printing game - but the first resin printer is a bit of an oddball for them, launching as a premium machine into a market that's already dominated by simple import machines like the Elegoo Mars or the Longer 3D or Anycubic machines. So do Prusa manage to add enough value to their SL1 to warrant a 6x price premium? In any case, I wouldn't want to use a resin printing system without a cleaning / curing station like the CW1 again, the real winner of this review!

    Thanks for the review, good to see your results and hear your opinions.
    I wonder about the hollow mode you'd like though: I think it's not as simple as it first might seem because of (1) the need for internal supports and (2) the fact that the interior would need to drain. That second bit might mean you'd always have some uncured resin seeping out.

    This is a really helpful review. It's clear that Prusa SLA printers are hot on the tail of other big names. The LCD is the exact same LCD used in the elagoo/Anycubic, etc. And the tilting vat is reminiscent of the Formlabs Form 1. Additionally the screen and bezel are an exact copy of the Form series printers. Even the wash cure station looks like an exact visual copy of the form wash cure station. The shape, the way the hinge opens, the magnetic mixing impellor. Very interesting.

    Another thing I wanted to mention is that I also mostly use Water Washable Resin now. It has a little less odor than regular resin. Still not good for you but less odor is always better.🥴 You also save on not having to use IPA as much. I still use IPA to clean my build platform and tools and any time I use other regular resin for some reason. In any case it is one less hassle to deal with. 😉

    As soon as you said its 6.5x more expensive I bounced. They've earned a price premium in i3 style FDM because they have a quality control and solid design. But resin printing is much more solid.The tilting and resin level sensing is cool. I look forward to the open source replicas :)

    Thank you for the review and being thorough as always, Tom. Much appreciated!
    As a designer and a maker who has been using various 3dprinters for over 10 years, I find that "reliable" features from companies like Prusa or Formlab do worth the higher price compare to the chinese cheap printer that works great only probably the first few month and end up not able to find the supports the next year...

  • @BuildaSkill
    @BuildaSkill 4 роки тому

    Seems like they're positioning this as more of formlabs competitor rather than a elegoo competitor. Particularly with the software, looks like they benchmarked it from Formlabs (which doesn't have a hollow feature either)
    Glad they at least include resin volume sensing, I couldn't believe the formlabs didn't have any way of determining if there would be enough resin to finish a print.

    Standout aspects of the SL1 for me:
    - Heavy! This little box is stuffed full of gravity. Way overbuilt, but easy on the eyes.
    - Most reliable 3D printing experience I've had with any type (including several fully updated Prusa FDM machines). I've yet to have a print fail, even though I've printed some really iffy models with minimal support.
    - Resin prints look fantasic, but for mechanical parts it's harder to get a precise fit than with FDM (still figuring out the dimension changes and warping that different resins exhibit to varying degrees)

  • @agentcee688
    @agentcee688 2 роки тому +1

    The new SL1S is a big improvement over the standard SL1. It's much faster (up to 3x) and even has better print quality despite basically having the same resolution. I think Prusa addressed a lot of issues with the SL1, CW1 and software. They now have a high quality and reliable setup. It may be expensive, but it's still much cheaper than a Form 3 and in a lot of ways it's better. Sure there are much cheaper MSLA 3D printers out there with 4k screens and other attractive claims, but Prusa gives you MUCH better build quality and great customer support, not to mention the community they have fostered is amazing.

    Being someone that owns a Formlabs Printer (I also bought plenty of Prusa Products, not bias), Wash Station, and Curing Station. I still would rather stick with FromLabs even if it is more expensive. You dont have to unload/load IPA, the part is lowered into the IPA automatically, and raised to be able to drip dry some. If I do have to change out the IPA I can either use the included hand pump, or lift the whole bucket out to pour it. Also came with a hydrometer (maybe this one came with one as well idk) to test the IPA, to make sure it is still cleaning.
    For me the only downside is it's a slower machine being that is SLA. But the post processing seems to be a bit more enjoyable then this one.

    A question for people with MSLA LCD based printers: has any of you repaired the LCD by replacing the polarizer film, or does the screen degrade inside the LCD itself?
    I'm wondering about making one for myself as well (after an FDM that is) and not too keen on replacing LCDs every dunno how long, but also would prefer that instead of the galvanometer mirrors so it's faster.
    If it's repairable by replacing the polarizers on the screen then it's a lot more appealing.

      I'd suggest trying Siraya Lab Blu resin. Its one of the most expensive resins you can purchase here in Canada, but it can produce functional parts that are also more impact-resistant compared to other resins, and the parts can even have some flexibility to them. As for dimensional accuracy, its my understanding that you definitely shouldn't be having those kinds of issues using that resin. Hope this helps you!

      @@HighbridgeD do you think it's the resin causing the deviations in my parts or the print settings?

      @@WGAJeremy I'd be willing to bet it has more to do with the chosen resin than your print settings. Standard resins will produce better dimensional accuracy compared to flexible resins for example. But it could be a combination of factors. If your lifting speed in your slicer settings is set too high for the resin you are currently using (say, flexible resins), you may find that over time part of the print will end up being warped or bent as it is being pulled out out the vat. A final consideration could be a lack of support structures for certain sections of the print. It can be time-consuming and tedious, but manual support placement may need to be done as well. This is all I think of off the top of my head, hope it helps!

    I don't get why the touch screen is directly under the resin vat. It would make a lot more sense to have a separate control box for the screen, so you don't risk contaminating it with resin

    Is there a concern that the tilt mechanism will eventually go out of alignment and need manual readjustment? I can see this being a problem with other similar printers as well (e.g. FormLabs).

      It has an endstop built in for zeroing - not sure what else would be able to lose accuracy over time in the tilt mechanism.

    Just a quick heads up for anyone watching this; Prusa just released support for hollowing out prints in the 2.2.0 release of PrusaSlicer.

    2020 has been a long year. It felt like the SL1 has been out for 3 years already.
