- As most of the folks I hand around with know, I'm a big Jimmy Buffett fan. I've always wanted to fashion a song around the life of a pirate, or at least the perceived life of a pirate, in a similar vein of Jimmy's "A Pirate Looks at Forty."
I had the title and was working on some lyrics although all I had that really fit was the last bit of the chorus. The previous uploaded song "Dreamin'" stepped in a took over so I followed that trail (as any writer should do when you have an idea flowing so naturally). Over the past few days I worked on the lyrics and decided that since I haven't written anything on the ukulele recently, this might be the opportunity to do so. This is the end result.
A Pirate's Share
(1)
My life has been easy; my life has been hard.
I've made the right wagers but drawn the wrong cards.
I made it my mission to live strong and free.
But fate's often fickle; there are no guarantees.
(2)
I walked through the forest seen beauty untold.
I've climbed over mountains in search of fool's gold.
I've stumbled through deserts looking for the truth.
But dreams of the future are now lost inside my youth.
(CHORUS)
Sailing with old memories to a shore that's far away.
Chasing after the setting sun as night devours day.
All I ever wanted was to sail the oceans fair.
To sit with a chum with a bottle of rum and hold A Pirate's Share.
(3)
I've searched for the good life and thought it was lost.
The treasure I discovered is well worth the cost.
My memory weakens with each passing year.
The path that I've taken is now oh so clear.
(4)
I didn't need silver or paintings of kings.
I didn't need rubies nor the money that they bring.
I didn't need diamonds or pearls from the seep.
I just needed someone whose heart I could keep.
(CHORUS) x2
(Outro)
To sit with a friend till the bitter end and hold A Pirate's Share.
