More than Imran..it was Javaid who led the team...just see his courage...standing just 4_5 feet away from the striker..no helmet on head..constantly yelling and irritating Indian umpires..arguing with them. What a Team oriented player he was.
Yes one of the greatest test matches and a great innings by Gavaskar. Even though the test was played with full aggression, the players were very friendly off the field. I remember Gavaskar mentioning that, in those days, there was a rest day after the 3rd day of the test. Indians and Pakistani players played Holi together. The spirit of the game was very different back then I also remember that in the mid 90s, I used a chat application called ICQ and became friends with a random Pakistani called Omar Qasim. Later I came to know that he was the son of Iqbal Qasim, the star of this test match. Iqbal Qasim later became head of National Bank of Pakistan.

Gavaskar had not declared that it would be his last test match.After playing a masterful knock of 188 runs in the bi cenetary match of MCC in England in summers of 87 where world11 played against MCC 11 a match of five days and having chosen the best batsman of the match award Gavaskar declared that now he has played his last five day match and thus broke the hearts of millions of his fans.But he also said that he will participate in the coming one day world cup to be held in india in later comig months of 1987.And he scored his 82 ball one day hundred against Newzealand that was his first and last one day hundred.What a player he was.We still miss him.

During the last day at around lunch time, I was in the university and when suddenly they lost Gavaskar, I rushed to home anticipating a Pakistan victory in sight, to watch the last 3-4 wickets falling. It was one of the most thrilling test match we have ever witnessed.

I still remember this nerve breaking match as it could go either way. We all gathered at college hostel mess and enjoyed a lot. When Gavasker was out we felt quiet relieved. Iqbal Qasim excellently bowled his spell, a great spinner indeed.
I was at the stadium for the 4th day when India reached 99/4. I clearly remember that there was large support for Pakistan (roughly 40-45% of the crowd appeared for Pakistan). You can hear these cheers when Pakistan got a wick, especially on the last day of the match, in the recording. I also was at the same stadium during the 1996 India-Pakistan match (World Cup quarter final). But this time, the support for Pakistan was less than 1-2%!

Pak players did make it a pressure cooker situation, in which they were appealing on each ball Gavaskar played, but Gavaskar remained focused and unperturbed. Also, many LBW appeals against Gavaskar were rightly turned down by the umpire. No matter what Pakistanis say, the ball clearly was going out of the line of stumps each time. Had umpiring been totally biased, Pakistan would not have won the match! Imran himself has famously said, "During my times, Pakistan losing out to India in Pakistan was not an option, and similar on the other side." Considering the pressure situation, the landmine pitch, Pakistani spin bowlers, and close-knit fielding, this has been among the best test innings played by a batsman. Scoring even a run on this pitch was a challenge. Gavaskar hit 8 fours, whereas the other 10 Indian batsmen could hit only 4 fours in total! In the Indian innings, after Gavaskar's 96, 27 runs were extra, and rest 10 batsmen could muster only 81 runs. Gavaskar would have won the game for India single handedly for the country. He had said that he will retire after this series, and he did so, even when he could have easily played for 2-3 more years. But as 'Sunny' said, leave when people ask 'Why?' and not 'Why not?'. India struggled to find good opening batsman for few years after 'Sunny' retired.
Javed had a huge role to play in the win. Imran was not ready to drop Qadir while Javed had a huge fight with him and insisted that Iqbal Qasim be included otherwise he wouldn't play. This is a fact many Cricket historians inclusive of Chishti Mujahid, Qamar Ahmed and others would vouch for and have mentioned.

Gavaskar was a master batsman, remain highest century maker of the world, for some time, and a staunch defender, I saw this match , in this match he made 90+ , but he was clear LBW two or three times but not given and a bat and pad catch also. Umpiring was worst then.
Pakistani players were appealing on every ball that Gavaskar played. But almost all the LBW appeals were rightly turned down by the umpire Ramaswamy, as the ball was clearly going out of line of stumps.
umpiring in the 80s was pretty bad except in australia. west indies, india and pakistan had ery bad umpiring. but dissent cannot be allowed. howsoever bad the umpiring.
I liked the commentators Umar Quraishi, Iftikhar Ahmad, Naadir Hussain n Chisti Mujahid in English. These voice is missing today. No commentator can match the description of these greats.

True but in all fairness the great Gavaskar always struck me as a non-walker like an Ian Chappell . I don’t know if he admitted that like Ian did but that what it seemed liked . Historic series especially since before the series Imran told Gavaskar to play one more series cause he wanted to win a series in India and without him it wouldn’t be the same . Cool.

Imran was a lucky man to win that match because he has selected a wrong combination including Saleem Jaffer and Manzoor Elahi who were medium pacers an a spinner Paradise wicket it was actually Miandad who guided Pakistani team and also great bowling and a bit of batting performance by Iqbal Qasim and Tauseef who not only took 18 wkts but also score 65 runs among them as the winning target was only 16 and also two catches by Qasim but Man of the match was Gavasker also a brave innings from Tiger Saleem Yousuf 41 not out Umpiring will never been forgotten in fact a full support from Indians umpires to thier team
