Hope of Man - Far Future Barnard's Star Mission in KSP RSS

  • This mission simulates a possible fusion powered probe to Barnard's star, specifically the exoplanet Barnard b. Barnard's star is about 6 light years away from Sol, with the probe traveling at 0.025c it reaches Barnard b in about 260 years. This is the fastest possible travel time achievable without incredibly advanced fusion engine concepts (e.g. Daedalus).

    Dang, imagine spending 260 years on a mission, then the probe crashes, and you forgot to make a quicksave.

    Damn, that was kind of sad, the way the probe went so far just to fail on the landing.

    Wait a minute, we already know Barnard B is uninhabitable, it is way too far from the star

    • @SpaceGrond
      @SpaceGrond  2 роки тому +4

      Yes I phrased that so most people would understand. We do know it is uninhabitable, however if the atmosphere were thicker it could be semi habitable, and the lander would have succeeded. Until JWST is fully operation we won't really know exoplanet atmosphere composition or thickness, we can only speculate ;)

    Thanks. Nicely done. I enjoyed the "sad" music. It's not really sad to me; merely more deeply emotional & serious. Perky music is often annoying to me! I will say that I'm not of those who thinks humans are likely to find another planet that's just "perfect" for (our) life. I'm of the opinion that, if humans are ever to travel bodily to another system, they'll need to go prepared to build and live in something like a hollowed-out asteroid or an O'Neal cylinder. Dirtside is for dummies, not pioneers tavi.

    • @SpaceGrond
      @SpaceGrond  2 роки тому +4

      I like The Expanse's take on it with the Nauvoo. The ship itself is basically a mobile O'Neil cylinder and is completely self suficient, so that if the target planet is uninhabitable it can still be colonized (like we would Mars or Venus)

    • @richarddeese1991
      @richarddeese1991 2 роки тому +1

      @@SpaceGrond Sounds pretty smart to me! I've heard scenarios wherein generation ships travel from system to system continuously. They stop long enough to set up one or more colonies, mine for some supplies, leave behind some folks to man said colonies, and move on. It's an image that strikes me as being much the same as a sailing ship going around the world way back when. tavi.
