Many thanks for posting this madlovba3 ! A most fascinating piece of work, the composers's vocals as impressive as his pianism. It does indeed sound more spontaneous than on his CD. Although I'm just a bit disappointed that in this live recording he does not cry 'stinka poopka' as he does in the studio recording ;-)
This is the most deeply moving political music I know of, and possibly Rzewski's best work. I read Wilde's De Profundis to see if it was all this good, but Rzewski had taken all the best lines.
@TheMetzMachine I like this piece very much, too, and IMO it is the best performance of it. I enjoy most of Rzewski's works tremendously, and I am going to upload more of it - for next time, his performance of Stop the War!, also for speaking pianist (the libretto, though, consists of one sentence only).
the anguished whispering and speaking match the absurdity of the piece-as does the thumping and the popping, beatbox-like sounds. the tone of the narration is somber and pessimistic-the music and harsh speaking voice convey this tone well, I think. the motif becomes progressively more haunting/desperate-this fascinated me to the end.
"Truth in art is the unity of a thing with itself: the outward rendered expressions of the inward: the soul made incarnate-the body instinct with the spirit. For this reason there is no truth comparable to sorrow..." De Profundis, Oscar Wilde

Just to let other listeners know: the piano part is "accompanied" by various vocal noises (which, like some others, I can well do without) up to 9.20, when Rzewski starts reading Wilde's text, "accompanied" by piano figurations. I suppose the question is: does the piano add anything to Wilde's text? I must admit I'm generally with MuseDuCafe and often find a mismatch here between the words and the piano effects, though there are effective passages (e.g. from around 14.30). Interesting. Thanks for posting.
New style,if you whistle like Okarina or using other charming singing birds type with your breaths or words lines of famouse phrosofers thioughts of romances for treatment stress for making funs for you ,and or making own arts,my ideas for you, how? Piano melodies are good impressions with your voices on echors. Not sadd unhappy, merry ceerful melodies ,next I am waiting ,not payment by your own composing free styles like this cautions by a writter opinions befor ,nothing coments as strange .
With or without talking, if it is basically a single-line instrument, even with extended techniques, etc. I get bored with the one timbre (regardless of incredible range of colors it can produce.) If there is speech tied into the piece, I just cannot stand it -- personal tic, also believe it "Just Does Not Work."
I have yet to have anything with speaking + music 'work' for me. I think Music + speaking = very strange (and nearly estranged) bedfellows whose marriage will never be fully comsummated.

Sounds like Glen Gould is having an off day to start off with, but it actually turns into quite an interesting work.

That part at 11:20 where it sounds like a Bach fugue... genius!
Hauntingly beautiful.
Indeed, what an eerie and ominous piece of music! Perfect listening for late October :)

this is amazing. it makes me feel like such a lousy composer
Well, there has to be a hater in the comments on any video on this site.
De profundis... No comment!
Belle oeuvre. Il faudrait juste enlever le piano et le "chant".
