Damn! I was right about that Ichabod Crane reference :O I also want to add another one, during the Devil song in the first episode, there's a How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Chuck Jones) reference when the Devil slithers in pretty much the exact same way the Grinch did during his song.
These references are just amazing! The team who worked on this Show did an outstanding job! They have so much love and care for old and traditional classics!
In the Devil’s intro song, I can’t be the only one who also noticed the reference to “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” from the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas when the devil is “slithering” along the floors? I know it’s not the golden age of animation but it felt very much inspired by said scene.
That makes sense! The whole entrance of King Dice is a loving homage to Cab Calloway’s rotoscoped performances for Fleischer’s earlier Betty Boop cartoons, and “The Old Man of the Mountain” was his best performance for them!
I love the reference of the "pink elephants" I always liked that scene since my childhood. One that really struck me was Mickey Mouse with the ghosts coming out from under the door. I still have the disc of all those original shorts!
The only one I actually caught on my first viewing was the Skeleton Dance reference, because I've seen that short dozens of times lol. Although, and I might be reaching here, I really like to think the part moments before that where Cuphead and Mugman we're opening the doors the ghost were pulling up was a reference to The Beatles Yellow Submarine. It’s an art form, to perform genres in.(Something like that on the Incredibles commentary)
I knew they wanted to make the show old-time style while making it look like today's animation so seeing these references aren't that surprising to me but good video since I didn't know these references
Cuphead the game itself reminds me of the betty cartoon and other good old black and white movies and stuff. And now it's animated im glad it still has the vibe to it
The scene where they ran into the haunted house and the skeletons appeared from inside the stairs, I swear to god Ive seen a similar scene in the Mickey Mouse - The Mad Doctor short!!
The best thing about Cuphead is that they clearly want to pay homage to the classics and beginnings of animation while still making their own thing. Absolutely wonderful.

He does like a walrus
Gosh damn this show is amazing it feels like animation at its roots I love the new stuff too. It’s just great to have variety in your life. And it just proves your show doesn’t have to be linear or whatever you call it for it to be good. That’s part of what made the 2000’s cartoons so fricken good. I love a linear structured show too, heck Gravity Falls is my favorite show of all time. But I love animation in general. And Brad Bird once said that Animation isn’t a genre.
Yeah! I caught that as well
3:00 I was seriously expecting that one scene in over the garden wall for this one
1:29 the way she kept turning 💀
That Minnie the moocher clip gives me the heebie-jeebies. Who ever thought of rotoscoping a walrus onto that dance deserved a raise.
2:17 parry
ALL
Painting scene with Mickey Broom holding a bucket like that better. 🪣
Spooky scary 2:45
Dude as a snow White fan, I INSTANTLY recognized the style of the trees and their eyes, as well as his expression. Expertly animated.
Me too, that's my favorite Disney movie, but how the heck that reference made it into another series, I'm so surprised that the reference was there
Elder Kettle also uses a manure labelled “Acme Grow”
The best thing about Cuphead is that they clearly want to pay homage to the classics and beginnings of animation while still making their own thing. Absolutely wonderful.
1:12. I do wish you could've included the ' Floating Log Croc' as seen in Snow White near the river when Mug Man Stared at that Tree Root that looked remarkably similar.
i haven't even seen the cuphead show yet, and i knew _instantly_ that the King Dice clip had to be a Cab Calloway reference. what an icon, i definitely recommend checking out his other performances.
If I'm not mistaken I'm sure that the instruments from the beginning of the video were from Silly Symphony - Music Land. It's one of the first things I caught when I saw this show.
Now this was a work of art, and was worth the wait
Also when the skeleton bride came out of the tomb it gives the "Corpse Bride" vibes, I know it aint Disney, but I loved this movie
Even the first clip has another reference. The Saxaphones and the Cellos are probably referencing the Silly Symphonies Music Land short.
The legend returns
I never really noticed these details! Thank you for pointing these out!
It's been ages since I last brushed up on my classic cartoon research!
