      Good afternoon, I need your help. I have an Asus rt ac5300 and gt ac5300. My current setup is the gt as main and rt as mesh, both with default asus firmware. I want to install vpn on my router, but to my knowledge, I need merlin if I want to choose which devices will use vpn once connected to router. According to my research, gt does not support merlin. What can I do and what would be your best recommendation. Thank you for your time.

At 62 there are a lot of things technology related that I don't understand, VPN for example, and my oldest son just doesn't have time to help the old man out. Damned software engineers anyway! One thing to mention though is that the default IP address of most home routers is actually 192.168.1.1 (and not 198.168.1.1 as mentioned a couple of times). I'm only saying that here in case it helps someone get connected who's not having any luck connecting using "198". Besides that, it's a really helpful, easy to follow tutorial, nicely presented. Thanks! :)

    Nice and simple. I was going to set up a dedicated VPN router on the home network. Even went out and purchased WRT3200ACM. But I don't like the idea of having to log into the router every time I need to change VPN connections (States, Countries, etc) so I think I'll just stick with VPN on my device.

    I like your video. Very clearly explained. One thing you might want to point out is that the processors in routers aren't very powerful (compared to PCs). The act of doing all that encrypting/decrypting will drastically reduce the speeds you get from your ISP. On my ASUS router (RT-AC1900P) I never seem to get much over 20Mbps, even though my ISP will do 400+. I contacted the VPN (in my case PIA) and the guy there explained how the chips in the routers just can't do the job fast enough for high speeds.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 роки тому +7

      Great point, Kile. It’s good to note that older or cheaper routers will offer slower speeds during encryption.

    Hi there Josh, this has been very helpful, thanks for helping us newbies (especially us oldies!). I do have an issue though. While not on your list of recommend routers I bought an Asus RT-AX88U which I assume came out after you created this video. Your instructions on OpenVPN are crystal clear, I downloaded the configuration from the NordVPN server page, uploaded to the router. When I click to Activate from the VPN Server List however, I get the continuous wheel spinning under 'Connection Status' and no tick. I already updated the router's firmware and I have tried both Open VPN UDP and TCP downloads with this same result. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

    Thank you for the video, Josh. I have a question in regards to running dual VPNs. To work remotely, I have to access my company issued VPN on my laptop. If I also run a VPN on my router (my own personal VPN subscription), would I be able to successfully log into my work VPN and have it go through a second VPN in the router (to maintain geo location) without any issues? Anyone who can give insight.. it would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

      Theoretically, if you're running the VPN through your router, it should work. I do know that some corporate VPNs don't allow for that kind of setup, though. If all else fails, you can set up the VPN on your router and then when you need to connect to your work VPN, use a guest WiFi that doens't have the VPN installed.

    Excellent video. Really informative re putting a vpn on certain routers. I even switched to ExpressVPN. The interface on the LinkSys MR9600 looks different & I don't see a way to get the *.ovpn files I downloaded into the interface as you did with the Asus. Is there a video with instructions for the LinkSys? Do I have to flash this router? Anybody? Thanks.

      Unfortunately, based on a quick Google query, it looks like this particular Linksys router doesn't support advanced features like VPN setup. You'll need to either flash the router or get a different one. Sorry!

    I have a serious question, Sir. I have bought a router Netgear R6300 v2 in the blue strip, which is a pre-set firmware with the cable tv company I guess, I just can't flash the firmware provided by ExpressVPN, and I check with Expressvpn customer service, which is out of their knowledge about how to ease that firmware existing in R6300 V2.
    I guess what I need is to reinstall the factory firmware of R6300 V2 in the yellow strip, so I can upgrade the firmware provide by Expressvpn.
    Can you help me with this?
    Awaiting the hand of not waste this router, and thank you in advance for the help.

I have a device behind the router which I want to connect to a different server by using software on that specific device. Is that possible? Tried to find it on the Web if it works (properly) but very little hits or wrong examples, can you help me?

    If you use a router as an AP (LAN cable plugged into non WAN port) can you configure it to connect to a VPN or do you need to use the WAN port to be able to do this?

      Hey Marcus, I haven't tested this to be sure, but when using a router as an Access Point, it should still be possible to configure a VPN connection.

    How do you setup split tunneling direct on Routers. I have a Tenda AC6. Sometimes you need to deactivate the VPN because of Geo blocking . Dont wanna go the Split tunneling on the VPN app on different devices as it means I MUST install the VPN apps on all the devices.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 роки тому +1

      Most VPNs won't natively offer split tunneling. If you get a router with ExpressVPN, they have a dedicated router OS that offers split tunneling. Otherwise, you could also set it up where your guest WiFi network doesn't have a VPN and that's where you connect if you don't want a VPN connection.

    I was thinking to get an Asus router (currently using VPN via PC), but I was told you can only create ONE openVPN connection configuration at a time. If I want to change country I will need to disconnect + edit/delete the connection by installing the config file etc every time. I see you have 2 connections created, but is it because one is open VPN and the other is PTPP? You do mention that is some routers the "add connection" is not there. So what the software version on your ASUS RT-AC66U B1?

      I can’t be sure, but my guess is that the VPN is disrupting the method by which it checks the internet status.

    Hi, any thnx for your great tutorial. I'm following your tutorial to instal my VPN on my router (Open VPN) and I do it but the internet speeds drops dramatically. I've contacted the customer support of my VPN service and they helped me to make several configurations changes on the router, but it didn't help! I've a ASUS ZenWifi AX (XT8) Router. I'm using the pair as a mesh system. They are connected to the router from my ISP. The thing is: when i use the VPN on my devices (MacBook or Iphone) the internet speeds are OK (with a loss of only 10%) but when I only use the VPN trough the router i've notices 90% drop speed!. Can you pls be so kind to advise me? Many Thanks

San Diego is right across the border, but my current VPN only gives me Los Angeles as the closest California option. Since this company knows I'm in San Diego, and may not allow me to work from Mex, do certain VPN servers offer San Diego as an option or how can I find that?

      There are some WiFi routers that offer this capability, but for the average router, the best you can do is to setup a VPN on one network (i.e. the primary) and not on the other (i.e. the guest network) and then connect devices to one of the two based on whether you want them to run through a VPN or not.
