I have allways wanted to fly to one of those pancake fly inns on a Sunday morning at some small airport in the countryside. I am going to check my lottery ticket right now!
None of our products will thermal at all. Not designed for that. We do have one on the drawing board that will do exactly that but none of these do. Northwing makes one called ATF Aeros makes the ANT and Flylight makes one as well. They all weigh very little and can soar. Some of them have folding props and retracts even.

The gas tank mounted high provides gravity feed to the carb. If you look at the REV X the engine weighs about 110 lbs compared to this 55 lb motor plus a full 35 lb gas tank on the REV as shown making this model still lighter up top than the REV X and allowing the parachute which can be heavier than the gas tank to be mounted low. evolutiontrikes.com/rev-x/
Daniel Lewis they are a smaller 4” wide tire stretched into the 6” wide rim. The main thing you’re paying $500 more for when you get the big tires is the dual hydraulic disc braking system. The standard Rev does not have brakes.
I assumed it would run around $6K, but was sticker shocked to see their website lists it as $85,600.00. One could easily get a nice 4 or 6-place fixed-wing for that and less😮
The Rev in this video starts at around $20,000. The engine and prop alone cost what your estimate for the whole aircraft and the wing alone cost more than $6K. You mention an older used airplane, well, an older used trikes can be bought for 6-10k so it’s all relative. The REVO fully loaded is around $120,000. And a new 4 seat Cirrus airplane is around 1,000,000 now. Welcome to the world of aviation ;-)

Your products are on my radar now for thermalling. How about a folding propeller (or prop brake) to reduce drag while thermalling.
