    RG6 has lower loss but is very rigid and hard to bend. It is best for the long runs(through the wall, and antenna up the side of the house). RG59 is more flexible, especially the foam core, and is best for jumpers (from the wall jack to the TV/Cablebox, or from the cable box to the TV).

    thanks for that bit of info mate :) it explained a lot as to why my 3 tvs get different reception. I simply swapped over the cables to rg6 and its groovy as. Have a beer and realise that you've made a difference in someone's life :)

    i"ve been an Electrician for 35 years now and one day was at my rental house when "the local Cable TV monster company" was there turning on service for my new tenants. i said nothing about what i do for work and when he was the house was roughed in RG-6 he said "59's a better cable" ... when asked why he said "it's more common, and carry's the signal better" ... when i finally let him in on my profession he stammered "well 59's more then adequate for residential use, (not to mention cheaper for his company to use, i.e. barrel's, splitters, etc) .... christ... dont they teach them anything ? sure back when only a picture went thru it was enough. but now with TV, Data, some Alarms, and CCTV systems all sharing , i want the bigger piece of "Copper Core" i can get ..... there are some that are quite knowledgeable, they're just rare.....

      RG59 Is way better the cable company's rip people off so they can come out every so often. Also the fact they do not tighten a cable cord to causes a lot of problems. I am a tech they use this as an excuse to get paid. I actually have time warner and they say you can not touch are box. Well I actually unlocked it and found lose cables and the copper wire to short. You can not count on who comes to your house I say do everything yourself! Hell I cussed a few techs out not to long ago for hooking the people next door up to my line when I said I will make sure fcc knows they came out next day and put a new line in for them. The problem is to many people lie about matter. So I fixed everything myself.

    Difference between RG-6 and RG-59. Both are 75Ohm nominal impedance, RG-6 has a much higher bandwidth. DC to between 2.4 and 3GHz depending on manufacturer. The larger gauge of the center conductor is the main reason for the higher bandwidth. RG-59 on the other hand is good to around the 900MHz range of spectrum before the attenuation of the cable begins to cause severe signal degradation. Remember the a difference in 3db of signal strength is 1/2 the power. RG-6 has a much lower loss per foot on a given frequency than RG-59, and is also shielded significantly better. A good quality RG-6 can have a 98% quad shield, where RG-59 is lucky to have anything more than about 48% thus the RG-6 will have less signal leakage and less induced interference. Velocity factors of both cables are roughly the same, around 0.66%. Honestly I have no idea why RG-59 is even still made, it is garbage, lossy and much more susceptible to outside interference. If you look at the specs of RG-6 compared to 59, even if some manufacturer is recommending 59 (the only reason they recommend it is they never tested the equipment on RG-6 and cant be bothered to read a datasheet) that RG-6 will do anything RG-59 can and better. Only shitty thing about RG-6 is the shield cannot be soldered as it is aluminum, where most flavors of RG-59 have a copper or tinned copper braid.

      I am about to install an analog cctv system and require lengths of 20-25m (65-81ft) for each camera, would you still recommend RG6? I also read that RG59 is good for certain CCTV applications

      DeFinitive RG6 would be better especially if you decide to go with HD system using HD SDI technology.. RG 59 works about 50% of the time in that application. For analogue 59 works fine but may not be worth it if decide to switch down the road to digital/hd..

    3/10/22. I'm asking this Q eight years after the video, but I'm adding a TV to our system and need to tap into existing RG-59 coaxial cable, and my question is whether the FEMALE side of RG-59, where the copper wire fits into, is the same size for RG-6 as for RG-59? It appears from your video that the two copper wires are different diameters. So thanks to anyone who might be able to reply.

    obviously, the RG6 is a far better cable. but if you're using it for CCTV camera they're harder to use due to its flexibility in corners.
    most people use the RG59 for CCTV camera's (which has become a really demanding product.)
    I "m about to do a new installation of CCTV cameras in a really hot weather area NV. would you recommend using an RG6 and a separate power cable for CCTV cameras?

    For the purpose of identifying which existing cable you may have to deal with, it would be good to know the actual diameters of the 2 different cables. I have one running above my suspended ceiling, I need to replace its connector, but I don't have a way of knowing whether I'm looking at an RG59 or an RG6 up there, and don't want to have to make 2 trips to Radio Shack if I don't have to.

    what cable would you advise i use to make a home-made subwoofer RCA cable ?. don't fancy spending a big chunk of money on a decent pre-made subwoofer cable, so figured i would buy a length of cable and some connectors and make one. i am no electrical expert, so need advice on whether or not RG59 or RG6 is best used for such an application ?. any advise would be much appreciated. i do have an old sub cable that is RG59, but doing research tells me a thicker copper core, plus the more shielding it has is better, so i am figuring RG6 will be best ??????????.

    I have an RG6 question, A satellite technician came by the other day, and was suggesting that my problem was due to my RG6 cable was not rated for a high enough bandwidth.
    My problem was something else, but it raises the question:
    What are the bandwidth performance characteristics of RG6, and are the quality differences between brands important for the home user?

      John Botts
      Hi John,
      No sure how to email you.
      I called the satellite provider, and the local cable company and said: im wiring my house, what kind of coax do i need for your service. they both said RG6: went to radio shack, ( the techiest retail store in this town, and purchased their RG6 Cable. It has worked fine so far. It has a copper core, and foil shielding and mesh shielding.
      The comment the Sat tech made was "Since it was not printed on the cable, it may not be capable of the 300M(?) bandwidth required for this application.." It got me thinking.
      I have never noticed that kind of information being printed on the cable, and thought that the standard that the cable was manufactured to, would provide that information. Clearly this is incorrect.
      Like many things, seems like the more you know the more you realize you don't know. Frequency needs, Bandwidth needs, distance, plus probably others. but even if one understands those requirements, how does a consumer find the right cable?

    I was told that old or even weakened coax cable does not effect data, video, or audio transmission over the internet and as long as the internet speeds are within spec then its fine. Is it true that coax cable whether old or new dont matter for the internet quality?
    The reason I am saying this is because I am definitely experiencing a moderate problem where my audio quality seems compressed and thin on everything and anything over the internet that contains audio, allot my bass frequencies are missing and mostly the high frequencies in the 10 - 16 khz range seem like its being cut out in bits and everything sounds quieter than the source. UA-cam, pandora, soundcloud, downloadable mp3's. Everything is sounding really bad at least to me because I spend allot of time producing and mixing music, work with audio for all sorts of things so I am well aware of its overall character and depth and satisfied when its sounding the way it was initially produced and etc. I now know the coax in this place is all rg59 and that the thin copper wire is mostly part of the cause of this audio degredation, also experiencing visual degradation but am certain the two problems are tied together. I have tested my devices in other places, even mobile data on my phone gives me a better stronger signal with better quality.. I am sensing that velocity or speed is not the problem but power and bandwidth is the problem.. Just because its running fast doesnt mean its better, my tech told me that I dont need new coax cable that the old coax is fine and I know hes wrong I just want to get a better understanding into the science of this subject matter because its important for people who create and share content and im sure others want there content that they created or share to look and sound exactly the way it was intended or initially created. So how exactly can the coax effect data over the internet?

    • @bmcelvan
      @bmcelvan 5 років тому

      Anthony...internet signal is a digital signal. It's pretty easy to test because for the most part it either works, or it does not. It is not going to effect specifics of a signal, like a sound range (10-16kHz). Either the receiving end gets the data properly or it doesn't (digital signals have a way to test if they are received). Any issues with content of that signal is either a problem with your equipment not playing it back correctly, or it was badly encoded before it was sent. Hope that helps. Stuttering/pausing is the only thing the coax cable might cause (or straight up signal loss) while streaming media.

    RG6 vs rg59.. These days, RG6 is copper clad steel, rg59 was always solid copper. case closed, bigger isnt always better. HPNA is usually higher data rate on rg59 because of solid copper.

    • @AlexanderNecheff
      @AlexanderNecheff 5 років тому +1

      Actually, due to something call "skin effect", the bulk of the current flows over the outer edge of the conductor. So copper clad is a great way to reduce the cost of the cable without significantly impacting the cable's ability to carry signal.

    • @frankenberry9670
      @frankenberry9670 6 років тому

      Sigh. It depends on where you are talking about. The internet is a big thing with lots of different stuff depending on where you are talking about. I'm assuming you mean an internet connection supplied to you by your cable company for personal use. They supply the cable coming into the dwelling so you shouldn't change it. Its probably RG6 but not your worry. The cable from the outside goes into a box that is usually called a cable modem. It can have outputs for telephone, tv and your local area network. Each output may use a different type of cable.
      1. Telephone is UTP ( Unshielded Twisted Pair)
      2. TV is generally RG6
      3. Local area network is Cat5 or greater which is normally UTP rated for LAN use.
      Telephone can actually be just about anything with enough conductors but UTP is what is normally used.
      Local Area Network cable has various types depending on what speed you are running at. Cat5 is currently the slowest in general use while higher numbers such as Cat5e and Cat6 indicate higher speeds if your router and internet connection support it.

      The RG stands for Radio Grade and came from the US military specifications for cable used in connecting radio equipment together. It would be used to connect an antenna to a receiver where the signals are measured in megahertz. Audio applications in general max out at less than 25 kilo hertz and sub woofers are in the 20 to 200 hertz range. Co-axial cable would be wrong for that type of application. Simple speaker cable will work fine.

    is the rg6 cable the same as a CatV cable?

    • @jayfblank
      @jayfblank 4 роки тому +1

      No. Cat 5 consists of four twisted pairs of copper wire (solid or stranded - think I've seen non-copper stranded) - connected in pairs: 2 pairs for ethernet, 1 pair per voice line - some may argue against running voice down an extra pair in a data run - making that decision has multiple factors. The connectors look like giant phone plugs - 8 conductor instead of 4 (and some four-conductor plugs may only have two wires connected (see above - 1 pair per line)

      Cool story bro!! A tradesman/repairman getting a manicure is like buying a tux to go pump gas. It's pointless, waste of time and money. No matter how hard you try that tux is gonna get destroyed just like our hands do. Hard enough to keep them clean so the wife (s) would let me eat at the kitchen table.

    you are wrong, both cables in your hand are RG6 but the left one is a cheaper quality from a crapy company probably. RG59 comes with power cable and the most use for it is for video cameras to power the camera too so you dont have to wire two separate cables. RG6 are best for tv, satellite use. your video is miss leading, take it down.

      Not to be to rude but you're wrong. You should probably do a bit of research before propagating disinformation.
      Coax that includes power conductors is a hybrid type coax and can't be legally sold or marketed in the US with the Military designator of RG59.
      The "RG" in coax specifications is a military designator that certifies the coax meets US military specifications. There are no military RG specs that call for power conductors to be included or molded as part of the coax.
      The Coax you refer to is marketed as RG59 Siamese or RG59+ which is an RG59 Type coax and its a hybrid type coax which doesn't meet US military specifications for RG59 coax.
      They can get away with calling it RG59 because they are calling it an RG59 "TYPE" coax and not an RG59 coax.
      True RG59 coax which meets US specifications is very good coax. Unfortunately there's a lot of garbage being marketed as RG59 "Type" hybrid coax.

      Kou Rosh sorry to contradict you, but they are not the same type of cable. RG6 has a core twice as thick as a RG59 and considerably more shielding. I work with this stuff every day. The cable on the left was RG59 type. The fat one was RG6.

      But a bigger core that is copper clad steel is shit compared to a solid copper rg59

    • @jayfblank
      @jayfblank 4 роки тому +1

      WRONG. That's called "Siamese" cable - a hybrid cable with two separate complete cables fused together - one for video, one for power. The only thing RG59-ish about it is the coaxial configuration of the cable that carries the video.
