Love it that you’ve given the Grime beat a mention. There’s an interview of the composer out there where he explains about the production of the Grime track and how working as a UK based DJ/record shop owner helped influence the sound.
That's exactly what I was gonna write. Went one day to Blockbuster, saw this, and thought to myself "Woow, a Wolverine game, it must be badass", then feeling disappointed after 10 minutes of playing it.
Lessons for developers: Start by just making your character fun to control. Make the controls easy & smooth. Then focus on enemies that properly challenge the player without feeling cheap. Start with easy challenge enemies, and work up. The game should be easy to pick up, difficult to master. The challenge should come from mastering skills, not wrestling with bad controls.
Dylan sky same I saw this at my local video store when I was a kid and decided to rent it! I thought to myself surely this game is good its Wolverine how can it go wrong?! Biggest disappointment ever! Ruined my weekend also. The X-men games on genesis are way better!
Some parts of this game you showed in the video remind me a lot of Super Metroid with the level design and level art. Makes me now think how cool it'd be to make a Super Metroid romhack with Wolverine instead of Samus, and you go round finding upgrades that give him his powers one by one, you could invent some story about why he lost them, it doesn't really matter. Like eventually you'd get regenerating health, and a super jump, and stronger melee attacks because you rediscover adamantium and go into a machine that applies it back to his body etc. And it could be focused around melee instead of long range weapons like the original Super metroid, by designing enemies and level design to accommodate that, like melee focused metroidvanias like guacamelee and the castlevanias for gameboy advance and DS. I don't know, maybe it's a dumb idea, but I think it could work well. You could even skip the designing of a sprite for wolverine by taking one pre-made from on the the 16 bit xmen games. I wish I knew how to make romhacks
I think that's a really interesting idea. I don't think it's dumb. Even though I've never super into Wolverine or X-Men, I would totally play that romhack.
I'd totally be up for a Wolverine Metroidvania that sounds really fun honestly. If anyone with rom hacking experience sees this I'd love to play something like that.
Wolverine's healing factor is based on his sense of satisfaction from sleeping with other's wives/girlfriends. And since he's small it's like he slept with a lot of giant females!
I remember seeing an add for this as a kid, and seeing the box art put me into a frenzy of anticipation. As soon as it hit our local video rental shop, I got it, popped it into my snes, totally stoked, and after seeing the opening title screen I somehow realized I was in for disappointment. I was not wrong. It was awful.
OMG I remember playing this of shit of a game and deeply regret that I borrowed it from a friend. I mean I didn't even spent a penny for it and I feel bad for plugging it in my console
I can't remember ever playing this, which seems extremely unlikely so I must have repressed any memory of it. X-men: mutant apocalypse was a great game though
I like it too. I had fun playing it. I’m so tired of these elites bagging so hard on games that aren’t that bad. It’s like this game is hitler. I also really like James Bond jr.
Yup, I remember reading about it on a magazine and be excited be prospect of a good Wolverine game ( so far the only one that existed in Snes was Spiderman &the X-Men which is mediocre at best). The graphics looked great ans a the ridiculous amount of moves you could do blew my mind. I rented it, and it was one of the biggest letdown. The only Snes games with Wolverine are Capcom's X-Men and MSH War of the gems
This review completely lines up with my childhood memories. Reeaaally wanting to like this game and playing it so much but ultimately just finding it super frustrating
Awesome work, it's like someone said to some random person passing the "hey, you, do you know anything about making games or wolverine?" "Err, no nothing at all, wolver-who?" "You're hired!!" keep on gaming!!
There was a shop near home when I was a kid that let you play test a few games before buying, I had the chance to test this one for the Megadrive but as a kid I couldn't pass the first "push the lever and run to the elevator" on the first stage, then I've tried the X-Men 2 Clone Wars and dang that game started great! Had coop, played awesome and had multiple playable characters including Wolverine! I was really glad that I could play test both games and choose the better one! My childhood was better because of that LOL
The way to Get Past the second boss fight is to recharge your health when he transformes into the spike monster. So when he turns into liquid form and slides across the stage just stand on top of him and follow his movement patterns until u recharge. I beat this game in 1995 as a 9 year old. The fact that this is difficult let’s me know that the average gamer is a softie. Back in the days games were 10 TIMES harder and u had to finish em because it was ALL u Had
I grew up with this piece of crap, thankfully i didn't know better so i didnt think the game sucked, i thought i sucked at the game, which made challenging myself on it pretty fun even if frustrating as hell. But good lord this game sucks. Wolverine controls like a brick, jumping is god damn awful, touch the dpad a little too hard and he darts in a way like an idiot and there's one thing that wasn't mentioned in the video that the hitbox on every attack is awful, that little bit of white in the cow attacks are the actual hitbox and it is not fluid at all, if you use an attack and move at the same time the hitbox doesn't register, also if anyone just as much as blow some cold air in your direction your attack gets interrupted. Jesus christ how i hate this game now. But then you are right, the music is actually pretty good, i used to have it running without actually playing it sometimes.
I bought this game back then and thought it was ok. I still own it complete in box. It did annoy the hell out of me. I got pretty far but never beat it.
My cousin had this game when we were kids and we played the hell out of it. Although we never made it very far in, I do remembee having fond memories of it even though I also remember hating it.
thank you so much that you are hating so hard on this game!! I had it on my snes when i was a lil kid and i never could pass the boss fight against the 3 villans in japan. I mean it is the second lvl or so.. and i did put a lot of time in this game back then but this gameplay sucked so much man idk. I just played it again on a SNES emulator just to see if could make it now and it was very hard because i couldnt remember all the controlles so i gave up and searched here on yt for a complete walkthrou to see for the first time what comes after that lvl and what i saw was very disapointing. But luckely i found this video at the same time and to see that you have the same opinion makes me so happy. I can die in peace now thx lol
I remember beating the whole game long time ago on SNES. The level I had trouble with was the nightmare level where you get grabbed by some white hands and a ball in the air shooting sharp blades at you. I also remember Selene shooting at you and when you dodge her blasts, her percentage decreases. I don’t remember about Fugue in a red cloak, Shinobi Shaw, you don’t get to fight him and the final boss in a cave is huge and yellow from what I remembered. The ending was ok so there you have it.
THANK YOU. I played this for the first time like a year ago and could not figure out for the life of me where to go or how to reduce the bad guy counter meter. I got so frustrated I turned it off lol. So much wasted potential!
Executive in charge of Adamantium Rage: "Ok guys, here's what you do with this one: Just make it look good enough so that the screenshots in the magazines and on the back of the box look great and the kids will throw money at me...Uhh, I mean us. Yes. Us."

I literally just played this last night. My initial reaction was, "Oh God, LJN!" Then it was, "This game looks pretty good." Then it was, "Oh wow this plays like CRAP!" The claw climbing was good, though. Look at the Genesis version.
Glad he did this video. On the surface the cover art looks great and levels don't look bad. But looking at Wolverine's basic claw attacks look terrible. No way to really combo moves like Double Dragon or really jump off walls to attack. Maybe if they would have made it a little more Final Fight ish, with the side scrolling elements it might have worked better. Not knowing how many generic bad guys to kill before making your way to the boss would be extremely annoying and confusing.
I never played this game, but i remember ages ago when Linkara reviewed this game way back when Channel Awesome had their first anniversary crossover. "ADAMANTINE RAGE!" lives rent free in my head, and takes me back to simpler times.
I got this game for Christmas one year, alongside the U.S. Gold "Incredible Hulk" game. My parents' hearts were certainly in the right place and you can't blame them for being duped by phony licensed crap. All they knew was that I loved Marvel Comics and these games had Marvel right there on the box! Little did any of us know the horrors that existed within. Incredible Hulk was slightly more bearable than Adamantium Rage...but only just. Yikes, what a Christmas!
wish you could have had this video for me when i was a child. i could NEVER find this game and i ALWAYS wanted to play it and i've been bitter for years that i never got the chance. Thanks man, I love your videos.
It's a shame some many IP's were licensed to mediocre incompetent developers. if all of those comic book and cartoon games had been handled by Konami, Capcom, or any other of the good developers, we would have had so many amazing games.
The first 20 seconds of this vid got you a sub from me, lol. I'm just happy I'm not the only one, even as a kid, who rented this game (just once), turned it on, and thought...dub tee eff mate??
I'm one of the harshest critics and most difficult to please gamers in existence and I actually had fun with this game. I hated the music and the ending however. The controls were ridiculous BUT after awhile I got the hang of it and started running thru the game like a pro. I don't score it highly. At absolute best it gets a 6 but believe me when I say, after playing the LJN version on NES, this version will feel like a 10/10! 🤣 If you played the X-Men arcade games, Mutant Apocalypse (SNES) X-Men or Clone Wars (Genesis) prior to playing this game, you'll be quite disappointed as your expectations are going to be pretty high! Lol
It's definitely grime. The first song I pulled up on UA-cam while looking for grime beats was this one and it sounds exactly like this game lol. ua-cam.com/video/zm-l_ooEl3A/v-deo.html
Good Marvel licensed games were few and far between in the 16-bit console era which was a real shame since the X-men arcade game was a freaking blast back then! I had X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse on the SNES and while it wasn't a terrible game the difficult was very off putting. Especially since by the time I got it in late 94 I had been playing Doom on my PC for almost a year! :)
Ufff, I nearly beat it, but got so frustrated, no one was there, only wolverine and like 2 more names. Maximun carnage was fun. Have you done Warlock? Operation Logic Bomb?
I enjoyed this game. Controls took some getting used to but wasn't a big deal. The artwork and art direction is fantastic. Enemy variety. Good sound. Definitely don't agree with the harsh review.
I never played this one back in the day, but picked it up a few months ago and was incredibly disappointed. I didn't think even LJN could mess this one up. Boy was I wrong.
I was never able to pass the 2nd level in either the Genesis or SNES versions. I was so let down as a kid after the amazing X-Men 2 Clone Wars and Spider-Man/Venom Maximum Carnage games.
I Bought this game when I was like 10. Like most boys in the 90s I was a huge fan of all things X-Men, Wolverine in particular. It was alright. They did some things right, like giving wolverine regeneration and a wide variety of cool attacks and movements. The problem was how slow and underpowered he was compared with what you were fighting. I remember it being hard as fuck, at least for my preteen brain. My hand-eye coordination was good, but I don't think I was as patient and strategic as I am now. Another thing that sucked was there weren't many enemies I was familiar with, no Sabretooth, Omega red. Most of the enemies you fought and the environments just felt weird, out of place for a Wolverine game. While the visuals were good, I actually didn't like the music, I found the little bleeps boring and uninspiring, even downright grating at times.
The thing they all forget is WOLERINE CAN’T DIE! His mutant power is healing not the claws. I saw this game at a pawn shop for $1, the only thing I saw lower than that were those Burger King XBox games.
Jess Ragan REALLY? What kind of moron would think people would buy a gams like that. I didn’t see that one. I saw what looked like a Gaelic of bumper cars and a racing game. In th end, I left both games there a bought ZOMBIES ATE MY NEIGHBORS instead.
I really liked it but my playthroughs as a kid were rare, sometimes I couldnt beat second stage and sometimes I reached to cyber stages but never got through those i guess i Just liked the game for the music and because i was a wolverine fan
Just played the Genesis version of the game, with the improvement patch. Faster attacks, take less damage, do more damage, jump higher, no timer, turn instantly - Wolverine is finally the badass from the comic. And yet, thanks the the labyrinth of limited background tiles, and nonstop cheap hits from nearly all the enemies flying or getting ranged attacks, it's still a more depressing war sim than Platoon. He just wants to go home...
I remember when I saw this game, was like wolverine game? I didn't know this exists... shut up and take my money xDDDD Sadly the game was totally mess, the control's are terrible... a big disappointed.
Great graphics for it's time, but not a good game. I played it so much just because I was a huge X-Men fan. Edit: If I remember correctly, the Elsie-Dee feature was only on Sega, not SNES.
I remember playing this game on release and being REALLY disappointed in it. I have not touched it since but I must admit it has been in the back of my mind lately, flirting with trying it again.
I almost rented this and a buddy of mine who was with me at the time was like "just don't". He saved my life...or at least my weekend.
Good friend
Marvel games were just not good back then, save Sega’s X-Men
I love how grungy the genesis ost sounds. I've listened to it on UA-cam before. Probably one of the heaviest sounding genesis osts.
This is a SNES game...
duffman18 he mentioned the genesis version at the end of the video...
@@ethelchip3620 oh yeah, sorry, my mistake.

Wolverine: Adamantium Rage-quit.
Owned this game as a kid, can unfortunately confirm.
I can't believe he listed the music as a positive. It's one of the most annoying OST I've heard.
It's only Wolverine. Of course the game is going to suck.

Is there a good Wolverine game ona 16 bit console or any console period??
I remember playing this game on Sega, pretty decent. It was nice to finish it
For all its flaws the soundtrack is fire
Ufff, I nearly beat it, but got so frustrated, no one was there, only wolverine and like 2 more names.
Maximun carnage was fun.
Have you done Warlock? Operation Logic Bomb?
I discovered this game a few years ago.
I thought it was going to be a kickass action game. I thought wrong.
And those sound effects. In the beginning cut scene what's supposed to be Wolvie snarling, just sounds like he's blowing his nose with alot of snot.
One of the best soundtracks in the 16-bit era
This along with mk 1 to 3,super mario 1 to 3 and mega man plus kirby
I enjoyed this game. Controls took some getting used to but wasn't a big deal. The artwork and art direction is fantastic. Enemy variety. Good sound. Definitely don't agree with the harsh review.
Wolverine for NES by LJN was bad too. This wasn't the first bad game.
*ADAMANTIUM RAGE!*
* tries to smash a can against my head *
Ouch...
Its times like this that i wish we could remakes of certain retro games for their respective consoles.
I never played this one back in the day, but picked it up a few months ago and was incredibly disappointed. I didn't think even LJN could mess this one up. Boy was I wrong.
I was never able to pass the 2nd level in either the Genesis or SNES versions. I was so let down as a kid after the amazing X-Men 2 Clone Wars and Spider-Man/Venom Maximum Carnage games.
since when does wolverine kick hurt my soul a bit lol great work as always besides that
Can you make a video on the SNES Prince of Persia games?
You have to wonder if there is a way someone could go back and fix these kind of games with roms or something. Have a great rest of your day.
Holy crap I need to change my desktop background to my angry face
I would say the Genesis version is better because I could actually beat that game as where the SNES game is completely unplayable.
It seems like a lot of the games I saw during my year of Nintendo Power (June 94-June 95), but I didn't try out as a kid turned out bad.
Regarding the music, “Nothing sounds quite like the 8-0-8!”
Should we get a game for Wolverine like Arkham Asylum?
My thoughts exactly about the music. I was almost as surprised about that as I was to hear you call it out as a grime beat! Nice one.
it holds the title of having the first grime beat. There's some good articles on it and a few edits with grime vocals over it too.
The thing they all forget is WOLERINE CAN’T DIE! His mutant power is healing not the claws. I saw this game at a pawn shop for $1, the only thing I saw lower than that were those Burger King XBox games.
The Burger King tried to surprise Wolverine with a Whopper meal. His funeral will be held next week.
Jess Ragan that makes no sense.
@@chrislowe2793 One of those Burger King games is called Sneak King. You're the restaurant mascot, sneaking up on people and giving them sandwiches.
I didn't know this exists... shut up and take my money xDDDD
Sadly the game was totally mess, the control's are terrible... a big disappointed.
Great graphics for it's time, but not a good game. I played it so much just because I was a huge X-Men fan.
Edit: If I remember correctly, the Elsie-Dee feature was only on Sega, not SNES.
Elsie Dee was present on the SNES version as well, although I've only seen her showing up from the 2nd stage (the Japanese one) onwards.
I remember playing this game on release and being REALLY disappointed in it. I have not touched it since but I must admit it has been in the back of my mind lately, flirting with trying it again.
I remember renting this from the video store and was soooo disappointed. X-Men Mutant Apocalypse was better.
I was going to buy this game tomorrow...thanks for letting me know.....lol!
