  • Video #729: A unique alternative to polymer clay, with much superior properties for fine-art sculpted projects and creations. More Info: www.beadsandbea... Polymer Clay Tutor.
    In today's video I am going to demo a new product called BeeSPutty Plastic. It is a oven-hardened modeling putty that has the consistency of Beeswax for sculpting, but can be baked to a hard plastic for permanency.
    It was invented by a German Sculptor by the name of Stefan Neihues-Ellermann, who found that sculpting with Epoxy Putty was too restrictive because of the short working time before it hardened up. And Polymer Clay isn't the best for doing highly detailed sculpting. What he really wanted was a material that had the same properties as sculpting with soft beeswax, but the permanency of the hardening clays and putties. So he came up with a solution... BeeSPutty Plastic.
    It is much different than any of the polymer clays I have worked with. The sticky pliable waxiness of this prodcut is perfect for sculpting. It sticks to itself very well... raw clay to raw clay... as well as raw clay to baked.
    BeeSPutty can be baked in stages and new clay can be added and rebaked as many times as you wish.
    There are similarities to polymer clay in that you can mix colors... and it doesn't dry out or air harden, so you can take as long as you need to finish the piece, before baking. You can carve, drill, sand and buff, much like polymer clay, though a unique feature is that once baked, you can easily buff with a soft brush or cloth to a high shine, without the sanding that is required for polymer clay. Also perfect for sculpting.
    On the other hand, it is not the most ideal medium for certain polymer clay techniques. For example, BeeSPutty is too sticky for pasta machines, unless you are constantly cleaing the rollers. And it is way too soft for caning. I can see some uses for bead making... especially sculpted beads, since it is perfectly suited for sculpting. It also may be good for some of the faux techniques and other small projects like making fairy doors, miniatures and that kind of thing.
    It comes in some basic sculpting formulas that are gray or gray-green in color, with 4 firmness levels... Regular (light gray), Firm (dark gray), Summer Firm for warmer temps (gray-green) and now a new one called Summer Firm Xtra (green-gray) which apparently bakes at a higher temp and is stronger.
    There is also 2 opaque colors (White and Bone), 1 Metallic (Gold), and Translucent colors (Translucent, Skin, Black, Brown, Pink-magenta, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple). The Translucent is a lovely frosted White that shows NO signs of flaws or placquing. Nice!
    The colors are easily mixable and seem to be based on the primary colors rather than artist pigments. The colors bake true and have very little to no color shift after baking.
    I baked my samples at the recommended temperature of 115C (239F) for 30 minutes. However, I believe these numbers will need to be adjusted for optimal strength, because although the test samples in the video were nice and hard with flexibility on the thin pieces, they did snap quite easily when bent all the way. I have heard others speaking about the high strength of BeeSPutty, so I believe they either baked at a higher temperature, or they baked for a longer amount of time. Further testing will need to be done to determine which one, if not both, will be the case.
    Overall, I find this clay to be an extremely interesting product that is especially suited for sculpting, rather than being an all purpose clay like Premo, Fimo or Kato Polyclay. I look forward to doing further testing and experimenting in the future.

    As a sculptor I find this product very interesting. Sculptors who use water based clay and wax generally have to create with casting in mind as a final step. That usually means a lost wax or other molding process. This product can make it possible to make silicone mold then cast a resin piece quickly. The product does not look like it is intended for jewelry or items that will need to stand up to ware. But form a sculpting standpoint it looks great. Thanks for introducing this product to the polymer clay community.

      You're welcome Tom! Stephan told me that he has a new formula now, so that would be interesting to test as well. There are so many cool clays now that each have their own special properties. It's good to try them out ans see what fits your project best. If you do a lot of sculpting, you should pick up some and see if it suits you!

    Thank you for that wonderful video. I know that you followed the instructions of baking, but the breaktest seems to me like it is underbaked. So just rise the temperature a bit up to a maximum of 130°C. If the baked piece will get some white shiny crystals on the surface you have to lower the temperature a bit. I know its a bit complicated for some users, but to get this sculpting properties we need this. Also we are working on a much more stronger version that can be baked at 140°C. I can post a link to a video, if somebody is interested in.

      +studioworx Thanks Stefan|! I will try some tests using a higher temp and do another video. I understand the need to tweak things to get the best results. The more I learn about polymer clay (and polymer-like clay), the more I realize that every brand has its advantages, disadvantages and little quirks to get it to preform at its best. One thing I really love about your clay is the way it sticks to itself. Sometimes when you're making items with other regular polymer clays like Premo for example, adding clay to armatures, or adding new little bits to a piece, can be really tricky. BeeSPutty is easy to do this with! I'll play with it some more to get the strength up. Your new Sumerfirm Extra sounds promising too! And yes, go ahead and add the links to the videos you were referring to. I will make sure that your comment gets approved. ~Cindy

    As a doll maker, it seems wonderful. But with my kind of dolls, I need superior strength. I'd love to see a future follow up test of all the strengths at different baking times. Thanks for all the wonderful info. It's invaluable learning.

      Hi Shelly, I believe he has a stronger product available now and/or you can bump the temp up a bit for more strength. If this product seems like a fit for you, I would contact them and get their advice on getting more strength out of the clay. I would like to do more testing myself but it could be a while before I post any results.

    I have to say I really like the packaging. It allows for nicer storage without wasting money on bags to put the clay in.

    I know that you said it can be baked several times, but won't the part that gets baked more then one time be much harder or even burn 😰

      Polymer clay is very different than baking food. When you get it to the right temp it "melts" kind of... just enough to fuse it together but it doesn't "do" anything else... so it can be in the oven at that temp for as long as you need it to. The longer it is in there, the more the particles fuse and the stronger the clay gets. If the temp is too cold, then the particles won't fuse very well and the clay is brittle. If it is too hot though, it will scorch or discolor... and if it gets WAY too hot it will bubble, puff up and smoke. I always use an oven thermometer so I know the temp is correct, then I bake at least 20 mins each time I bake... with the final bake being 1 hour. That way the parts that were added last are strong and the earlier ones are even stronger!

    could it be used with poly clay? not mixed but say a form made of it with say a poly clay cloak?

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  8 років тому

      +Tialisa Chapman Maybe... the temp difference could be an issue though. Perhaps if the polymer clay was baked first then added to the BeeSputty Sculpt, it could work. Worth testing to be sure.

    Hi Cindy! Are you familiar with a russian polymer clay called ARTIFACT? I see a lot of videos by russian ladies who are using it and it looks very good. Ludmila Bakulina did a review on november 3th 2015. It is a renewed version of this clay and must be very good. As far as I know it is still only available in russia, but I also saw it in a french video ("Kpetit plat" I believe).

    What other polymer clay or sculpting materials do you find to be the hardest/strongest after baking?

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  8 років тому +1

      +Yulia Bighood I believe this clay will be stronger than my tests show if it is baked for a longer period. I will do some further tests to find out. But as for the clays that I am familiar with, the strongest after proper baking are Premo, Fimo and Kato Polyclay. The weakest are Craftsmart and SculpeyIII.

    • @YuliaLinderoth
      @YuliaLinderoth 8 років тому

      Thank you for answering! I've also found that SculpeyIII is very brittle, so that confirms it.

    aw i thought it'd be very strong and elastic... could u do a video on kneadatite (green stuff) ? may b making something with it..

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  8 років тому +1

      +Hiba Sharafuddin Me too. I have seen samples of BeeSputty being a lot stronger... my guess is that they baked for longer than the recommended time. Stephan did say it could be baked longer, and so I will have to do some more testing to see what time is the most ideal. When I bake Premo I bake it for a full hour to get the strength, so I will try that with the BeeSPutty to see if the full hour benefits it as well. As far as Kneadatite goes... I have never heard of it, but if I do come across some, I will certainly test it out. Thanks for your comment!

      I am sorry to hear you are disappointed... Stefan is a good guy. I am sure there is a reason for the delay. Remember that he is shipping from Europe and there are many delays and frustrations happening over there and shipping and tracking is not always the same as in the "same day shipping" that happens in North America. Have you tried contacting them?

      Yeah I just checked his site and it looks like he isn't carrying the colored clays anymore. If you are really interested in this clay I would suggest you go back to his site (link in description) and contact him to see if he will have more of this clay (I see he is carrying some different ones). Good luck!
