Liberal Hypocrisy On Sex

- Prior to the sexual revolution, society had a certain moral consensus on sexual behaviour. Then, factions in society started pushing for a cultural shift that led to the sexual revolution based on a desire to liberalize sexuality.
The argument went that it’s nobody’s business what consenting adults do in the privacy of their homes.
And this was a persuasive argument and continues to be one today, but unless you’re a libertarian or an anarchist, it leaves you open to a serious contradiction.
Because, this idea of consent absolving the parties from any wrong doing depends on the premise that it’s impossible to be a victim of something if you consented to it. But we don’t think that way for other aspects of our lives. When it comes to economic transactions, we don’t hold this same principle. In fact, we decry it.
Take the housing crash of 2008. Virtually everyone, but especially people on the left, came away from that blaming the bankers and lenders. Very few people had the audacity to say that the people who signed on to mortgages that they couldn’t afford were just as culpable in that blame.
In that scenario, we have two consenting adults, agreeing to something but most people seem to agree, those kinds of consenting transactions should be regulated by the law.
Take another example. The left has been consistent in promoting the cause of minimum wage. In other words, it’s not enough for two adults to look at a price for labor and agree to it between the two of them.
And if you believe that, then you HAVE to concede that consent between two adults isn’t enough to prevent society or the state from taking an interest.
So if you’re someone who believes that consenting adults should be able to do whatever they want when it comes to sex, but when it comes to economics, we can’t allow that, then you’re harboring a serious contradiction.
So, we have this bizarre double standard and contradiction when it comes to our sexual ethic and its no wonder we’ve been suffering from an outbreak of STDs, unintended pregnancies, a serious decline in mental health, and a staggering lack of success in marriage.
If it isn’t obvious, I’d say the solution is to treat sex like everything else we exercise prudential judgement with whether it be financial transactions or something like nutrition.
And nutrition’s actually a really good example because it is a biological function with a clear purpose but also has the potential to produce pleasure and influence social dynamics just as sexuality does.
But notice how cautious we are when it comes to our nutrition. Nobody would ever endorse a nutritional approach that says, do whatever feels good as along as everyone’s consenting.
And what informs our good decisions around nutrition is that we have never lost sight of the fact that the purpose of eating is to fuel our bodies. Pleasure is merely an effect, but if we mistook pleasure as the purpose, then things would go downhill fast.
And that’s what we’ve seen with sex. Imagine, for example, if you were able to be transported to an alien world in which people would routinely logon to the internet just to watch other people eating delicious food, or if there were adult clubs in which someone would come out from behind a curtain and perform a little dance while holding a plate of burgers.*
You’d probably say, their instincts for food have gone off the rails. Well, that’s basically what’s happened to us with sex.
So, if the purpose of nutrition is what informs our choices when it comes to eating, maybe we can learn from that and ask ourselves what the purpose of sex is because pleasure isn’t it. It has a very explicit biological purpose, but we’ve divorced ourselves from it. We’ve tried to have all the pleasurable effects of sex without the effects synonymous with its biological purpose in the same way that someone suffering from bulimia might try to enjoy their favorite foods but vomit them up so that they don’t produce the undesirable consequences.
But the thing nobody wants to hear is that the only fail-safe solution to our problems is monogamy. We’ve embraced a new sexual ethic that promised to liberate us from those constraints. But seriously, how constrained is it.
I’ve only ever had one sexual partner in my life, but I’m willing to bet that I’ve enjoyed far more consistently fulfilling sexual experiences than bachelors who are my age.
And I’ve been able to do so liberated from all baggage of wondering if I’m going to get infected or accidentally get someone pregnant. I’ve never had to worry about what allowing someone into my life in that way will do if I don’t intend to have an ongoing relationship with them. And I’ve always been able to experience sexuality with the full knowledge that the person I’m experiencing it with is committed to loving me.
* This argument is borrowed from CS Lewis' Mere Christianity
“Dance seductively with a tray of burgers” 😂😂😂
🤣🤣😂😂🤣
Do you get fries with that!!
You've a tremendous gift to articulate an idea. The analogy with food drives your point home really well. Keep doing this. God bless you!
George Paul
CS Lewis used a very similar analogy. I wonder if he got it from there
the analogy is from "Mere Christianity" by CS Lewis
I'd say as far as the food analogy works is that society singularly shames women for eating anything but a controlled diet, just as the religious shame girls and women for being anything but a pure gift to their husband, a vessel for his pleasure and for carrying his children.
But in reality, most people are probably far less careful about their diet than they are their sex life. And it isn't the non religious who consider marriage to be a permanent contract of consent. Fraudulent and dishonest conduct of a sexual partner can also have legal consequences.
Interestingly enough, in my largely religious circle, nobody shames anyone for eating whatever they want, and we hold the boys and men to the same standard as we hold the girls and women - that of a chaste person preparing for or living in a lifelong monogamous relationship for the good of both spouses and the begetting and raising of children. It's incredibly freeing to be without the ridiculous norms society wishes to impose, judging by my friends who are imposed upon by said societal norms.
@@slevesque8131 Holding others to a standard of chastity can do tremendous harm, no matter how good the intention.
A very good philosophical argument. I'm not Catholic, but you represent Christendom well! God save the West.
Update: I converted to Catholicism. Pray for me!
@@Velakowitz God bless you
Not religious but this argument really convinced me to practice abstinence. More people need to hear this!
LOL
How beautiful to have only one sex partner in life. And how wonderful and encouraging to those who have are still virgins to remain that way until marriage. Thank you for being so candid.
5:54 sounds like someone's been reading CS Lewis
Ian Wilson yeah I commented on that too before I saw this from you it’s ok though
The Truth cuts through the mire like a flaming sword. Well done!
@Seven Inches of Throbbing Pink Jesus cringe
I wish I had been with just one partner. It means so much and the other leaves you so empty. God forgive me !!!
@Cardinal Ratzinger Guild
Your comment is absolutely inappropriate & disturbing. James Kearney has shared an important insight into the dangers of having multiple relationships which takes a great act of humility to do so.
People will see his comment & may think twice before engaging in such dangerous behavior. Your attempt to belittle his contribution is simply wrong & truthfully an apology is in order.
If you have repented, then God has surely already forgiven you. You have been given an extraordinary grace. You are able to see the error of your former ways. Not everyone can say the same. God loves you.
Take up your pilgrims staff James, and walk with the Lord, never look back (once your sins have been washed away in the blood of Christ in confession, of course )👍
@Cardinal Ratzinger Guild The lol is what makes you appear uncharitable. Yes, the confessional is where these sins stay, but when people give testimony, it can help others. Do you think Abby Johnson is proud of working at PP and having 2 abortions? Do you think it's possible that another girl might learn from her mistakes?
It's never too late...we were both in this situation before our marriage with my spouse. And this time we were smart enough to wait.
I agree with the premise. That being that (1) throughout plant and animal life, sex is for reproduction of the species; and (2) humans fair better as individuals and society when sex is delineated through marriage.
That said, the fact that food nourishes our bodies, but also tastes wonderful, is no accident. My dear old Catholic mom explained to me in no uncertain terms when I was just 16-years-old that God intended for sex to feel good! God made sex pleasurable, by His design. So, yes, for reproduction but also yes, for pleasure. Not one or the other, but both. The joys of this life come with responsibilities. This is good.
Food is not unintentional good tasting the taste is supposed to tell us what may be good for human survival
@)Christopher Larsen Yeah, I don't think he intended to say that sex isn't for pleasure. In fact he pointed out that his sexual encounters in a monogamous relationship are likely more fulfilling than those of people his age who are permiscuous.
@@suppeople9987 - That's a remarkably anthropomorphic perspective. But I suspect you are correct.
@@spidernymph8964 - Agreed. Yes, I caught that part of the video. I suppose I only meant to belabor the point. And to be honest, I think there is much more to be said about how and why monogamous relationships benefit the partners. But for brevity, perhaps it's enough to just recognize the benefit.
How would you make intercourse not be pleasurable? Feeling pleasure is something that just happens during intercourse unless you have some condition, it isn't something that you have to seek.
This is the best video you have ever done. The Holy Spirit was really upon you.
Bien dicho.
Thank you so much Brian, you put it so very succinctly and well. Definitely a timely message for the world today! God abundantly bless you, your family, and your work.
""And that's not constraining at all." BOOM. Really felt your conviction and frustration with the state of things as you said this. Excellent video, sir.
Yep if only men could control women Jesus would be happy.
I used to be someone who was very promiscuous. It wasn’t liberating or even really fun, after a point. It was a wrecking ball to my self respect. I’m now coming back to the Church and I’m so grateful I left my old life
@Damian Leo Yes. My political views have changed. I lean more conservative now. I should have mentioned that alcohol played a big part in my downward spiral.

@Fat Albert I didn't confuse the two, thank you.
@@westonward735 We really need to hear how good men like Jesus, here in the video, are going to solve all of women's problems. You really care only about the "immortal soul." everything else is discretionary. The bible sets a bad example for human behavior.

Monogamy makes life so much easier. Free of a host of diseases; I know exactly who my kids' father is (and i don't have to prove it in court); and neither i nor my husband need feel jealous of or threatened by the other's ex.
God bless you woman..stay that way...
@Fat Albertrelativism is the biggest "one size fits all" garbage, Fat A.
This here us a woman who will actually progress mankind.
I was once in this exact position. I was a hardcore believer in individual rights, but at the same time I was also pretty far left and considered myself a communist (Thank god I came over to the right and am now becoming a Christian). I think that this kind of hypocrisy emerges from a kind of self-centeredness, it is "Freedom for me, but not for thee." These kinds of people will fight for their own freedom and liberty, but they will neglect the freedom and liberty of others and ignore the responsibilities that go along with them.
M8 that's not freedom, that is power. Too many people confuse power with freedom. But leftists do it on purpose.
I.e. women's liberation and women's empowerment. They change the wording depending on which crowd they are targeting.
You have such a way with words. You come across as very calm, and educated on the topics you speak on.
Wonderful video! Brian, you have wisdom beyond your years. Well done, and please keep it up.
This was an incredibly wonderfully organized video, Brian. I especially love the food analogy you used...very, very profound and solid argument!
I was at one point really struggling with this teaching of the Catholic Church, until I found this video of course. Thank you.
So well, very well said and presented! God bless you :-)
You are awesome in all your different viewpoints on various topics!
I never thought of it this way. This is golden!
Really appreciate your insight and clear communication in your videos. Thanks for taking on this topic.
Waw this food/sex analogy with blew my mind. Bravo for both the content and presentation!
How refreshing to hear a modern day young person, even very hip one, who understands God's design for us.
I am not Catholic but I love your videos. You really helped me with my religious path. I bow to you and your help. Thank you.
Just found your page and subscribed. Really, really great video! You have a gift to articulate challenging topics. May God bless you always!
Its difficult for a priest to explain something he isn't supposed to have.
Very well put, Brian.
Also happy to see your channel growing!
Brian, thank you!
All you say is spot on, as always with your videos. There is just one additional point that should be brought up in a discussion of consenting adults doing whatever they want in the privacy of their homes, and that is the victims of these actions. Many would say that if both adults consent, there are no victims. But in adultery, there are the unknowing spouses, the children of divorce. And even if the parties are not married to others, there are the millions upon millions of babies aborted; most of these consenting adults also view abortion as another form of birth control.
And so consenting adults are really stupid, selfish adults.
My thoughts EXACTLY! I love the analogy with food. Gonna use that in my future UA-cam debates
Excellent analogy! Thank you!!!
Someone’s been reading their C. S. Lewis! Loved the video!
This is pure wisdom.
I am pro choice, but I appreciate this video. It is extremely frustrating seeing other pro choice people making arguments that completely miss the point.
Once again Brian, you say what I think. Sex is only between a man and a woman within the marital bond. The rest of us must abstain.
@@troig43 Not hard. Stop obsessing about sex and set your mind and body to useful things.
Also, if you believe in God and His commandments, He will give you the grace needed to follow them. But you must pray and develop a relationship to Him.
@@troig43 It's not repression, it's freedom from certain desires. You have fallen for the lie that sex is a need, like air, food and water. It's not. Try fasting from it for a month or more. Give it a shot.
@@troig43 That's hilarious. Society focuses so much on sexuality and people have been led to believe that "their sexuality" is of the utmost importance- it has become their own religion and god. Been there, done that. No thank you.
@@troig43The glorification and deification of sex leads to perversion. The feeding of your sexual desires leads to perversion, duh.
Very good point, something to think on. I am liberal in the sense that I don't believe I should force my moral or political values on another. But I do pray that others would be able to experience the full joy and deep trust that marriage offers. I am in no position to judge though. I've been with my husband 22 years but we had kids before we got married 13 years ago . I became a Christian 6 years ago. So I've done it all backwards. I do have to say though that since coming to Christ my marriage has got even better. So while I wish that everyone would respect each other sexually , date, get married have babies, I did it all backwards and have no right to tell another. However , sharing experience , negative and positive is something I can do and then leave others to make up their minds.
You do this very well, you present an argument and allow people to chew it over. It is my belief that this is far more effective than telling people.
My only criticism is the bulimia comment. Bulimia is far more complex than eating food for pleasure and throwing it up just so you don't get fat. If you see what a bulimic eats in a binge it has nothing to do with pleasure.
Great point. I appreciate your work. The analogy of food and sex, I read it in CS Lewis. Assuming you read it too, it would have been better if you had quoted him so as to respect the originality of ideas (for those of us who appreciate that and the work you do). God bless you brother and your family.
One of the best put arguments for lifetime marriage. Thanks and God bless you.

Great video as always! What song is playing in your intro I really like it?
This was needed to be said in our present times. The problems laid out in this video are the reasons why there is a staggering high demand to legalize abortion worldwide, and why there is a skyrocketing increase in cases of HIV infection and antibiotic-resistant STDs. Thank you for this video, Brian!
Iesu Christe, Fili Dei, Domine. Miserere nobis peccatoribus.

P.S. I love the Kyrie Eleison background music!
I think it’s a bad comparison. We promote - need - laws to give people rights against people in a greater position of power. He expects employees to negotiate on an equal footing with corporations? It’s the same reason teachers can’t have relationships with students, because the power dynamic isn’t equal, even when the student is at the age of consent. It’s why we have age of consent laws at all.
Is his final position that we should legislate what happens in the bed room? I don’t know what he was aiming at.
I think its an all or nothing position. Which I happen to agree with. Either we legislate what goes on in the bedroom or we don't legislate at all. There is no in between. Choosing a middle ground is dishonest.
S asi58 I don’t understand your position. To legislate and outlaw sodomy and or not legislate and say pedophilia is ok? How is having a nuanced approach dishonest?
You don't have a right to equal footing in a power dynamic. Every transaction will have an imbalance of power....get over it. If you want to negotiate with corporations, you can negotiate as a group. If I offer you a job for 5$ and you accept, then that is a consenting transaction. If you don't like it, then quit. Simple.
I caught the CS Lewis argument and scrolled to see if it was acknowledged and it was! Kudos.

God Bless You. Intelligent and filled with the Holy Spirit.
There are many points that I agree with you. If we stay monogamous and keep with one partner, everything would change but unfortunately in the real world that just isn't the case. Stats show from many different places that in the US, 75% to 90% of people will have pre martial sex. It also doesn't help that we make sex a sin and try to make it to be an evil thing you will go to hell for. Tell teenagers not to do something and it will absolutely backfire on you. Which really the only way to combat this would be the US have a firm sexual education. Lowers pregnancy and STI by a huge margin. And hopefully show young adults the benefits of having one partner.
Bishop Fulton Sheen also used the food and appetite analogy regarding sex.
This is excellent
Amazing message :)
man AWESOME video
TODAYS SOCIETY NEEDS SO MUCH OF GOD... THANK U FOR THE VIDEO MY FRIEND!
GOD BLESS HIS ONE AND ONLY CATHOLIC CHURCH :)
I believe in free trade and consenting acts between adults as far as law is concerned. But I believe monogamy is the most stable and best hope for children and society in general. Let's get there with persuasion and example rather than force.
There are four thing that guides human actions and those also affect each other.
1. Biology
2. Culture
3. Economics
4. Law
Guiding behaviors by changing number 2 is the least tyrannical way to do things
@@sasi5841 You are assuming tyranny is a bad thing....it is not. The stability of a society is FAR more important than some subjective sense of freedom. Make the US government pass laws which make abortion illegal by death penalty, and ban contraception. Also, put adulterers in prison and jail anyone who cheats on their spouse. Society would improve overnight.
Brian, your capacity to mix up categories is absolutely astonishing.
Your analogies (with blaming the money lenders for the economic crisis or with regulating the minimum wage) overlook a very important detail: the "free" partners in those cases are *widely* unequal. Regulation is absolutely a must because otherwise the powerful side takes advantage of the weak side who "consents" because the choices in their case are wildly reduced compared to the other's.
The analogy with food is in the same vein: the biggest danger in overeating is obesity, diabetes and heart-disease - clear, palpable medical conditions and not the sin of "enjoying too much".
Hardly the case of what's going on in the bedroom where - assuming the situation of fully consenting adults of comparable maturity who know what they are doing - no blatant unequality is in exercise and no physical harm takes place.
You end the case well, though: sexual fidelity because it is an expression of love - love which by its very nature can't be built but with one single partner, consistently, constantly, for life.
I believe you should have started with that and stayed there. Trying to find analogies with "real world" scenarios and expose real world "pros and cons" is a dead route because the premises of the "real world" are crooked to start with.
Analogies don't have to equate different events but getting a point for human understanding. Sins aren't abstract things from a Christian perspective. And sex can lead to sexual deseases, pregnancy and psicological attachment. That's why he lists nutritional medical implications. Nice try making a strawman
Excellent analysis I see you’ve been reading CS Lewis a great source for effective analogies! Should he get a little credit for that?
Hilarious images there!
this is interesting but minimum wage laws and sexual consent are substantially different
I remember you showing us a picture of your 8 kids and they all looked exactly like you.
Very well said. Your comparison to nutrition is something that actually is becoming perverted now in the same way sex was in the 1960s. Look at the “fat acceptance” movement happening now. They use the same logic.
That food analogy was perfect
Great video!
Brilliantly put.. That's all I can say about it.
Given the massive amount of common sense in these videos, I would love to see one concerning premarital sexuality, especially for couples in serious relationships.
Fir those in serious relationship (whatever that means) maybe they should het married
Excellent video.
You are missing the point. The point is exactly that the power imbalance between employer and employee can create a situation where there is no consent and regulations aim to balance the field(whether they actually do that is another question). The employer has much bigger leverage in that relationship so much so that he can just dictate wages. Romantic relationships are regulated in the same way like having relationships with minors or having relationships with employees(depending on where you live)
Wonderful...
Excellent
When it comes to many moral issues, we tend to cite the religious "rules" in hopes of convincing non religious people of the rightness of our argument. It usually does not work. Not sure I get the analogy. Can someone explain? I'm confused on how eating and having sex are the same/similar? I think he's losing me because everyone has to eat otherwise we die. We don't have to have sex, otherwise all virgins (and some married people) would be dead.
