    When I was collecting moss, I came across an empty snail shell! I put it in my terrarium and it added a lot to it.

    Do you think you could do a basic "diagnostic" vid to help those of us whose terrariums are not doing so well? My class and I built some after watching your vids, and some are OK ,others not. Could you do a vid focusing on errors or incorrect conditions (eg. too much/little water, too much moss on top, too much/little sun, etc) and the effects they have on the plants? It would help greatly. Thanks, and keep it up!

      You have an entire class of people doing it, that's a lot of data. Maybe if you do it next time, take notes about the conditions and how they turn out and you'd have yourself a helluva how-to on upkeep

    Hey Tanner. I just wanted to say that you are a great inspiration and teacher. I discovered your channel about a couple years ago and fell in love with the world of terreriums, ripariums, paludariums, aquariums and pretty much every other -arium since then lol. I've always wanted to work with nature and after discovering you, and your channel, I was inspired to start my own business building terrariums and aquascapes. It hasn't gotten off the ground yet but I'll let you know when it does! Anyways, the point of this whole comment was to tell you that thanks to you, I started on this journey, and I built my first native terrarium just day before yesterday. The joy I felt was soo immense, this comment box doesn't have space for the words I would use to describe it. It was such a positive and uplifting experience for me, in soo many ways, to see that all the studies I've been doing on botany as well as my passion can be manifested into this simple little jar of plants from around my home. It signified for me, the first step in a much greater journey of finding myself and building a business/career I can enjoy and love. So... THANK YOU TANNER!

    I made one and one of the sticks I used started growing feathers the first week.. now I realize they are roots, as the stick must have been a disinterred root. There's no foliage yet, so I don't know what I'm growing in there. It kind of makes it even more fun. Snails have also arrived. I didn't see them when I was putting it together.

      I love this idea, don't you worry that the soil might contain tiny insects and you end up with tiny flies or something in the terrarium?

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  8 років тому +7

      Even if this occurs (which is likely), since it's a closed terrarium it's not something to worry about. They will eventually die off. Worst case you could take your terrarium outside, open the lid and they fly out.

    • @Geewiz593
      @Geewiz593 8 років тому +2

      I love your videos! I made a terrarium by following your closed tropical terrarium video, but unfortunately I don't have any access to springtails (yet). It has started to mould, and while I know this isn't something to be worried about, I can't find very good information about it anywhere, so I don't know what to expect or how to tell if it's moulding for too long or too excessively. Could you make a video explaining this process with and without springtails? Thank you so much!

    • @SerpaDesign
      @SerpaDesign  8 років тому +6

      Without springtails it should last about a month or so. I can definitely do a video on it here soon. Try airing it out for a few hours here and there. It should help solve the problem faster!

    Another great video. One thing to keep in mind is removing plants and even stones from some areas might be illegal, national parks etc. Also some plants may be protected so can't be taken from anywhere. And some aren't protected but should be. Some of the most beautiful things here in Indonesia are up for grabs but should be protected and back home in NZ there are amazing carnivorous plants and orchids that would be amazing in terrariums but can't be touched. Keep up the good work, bro. Your creations are beautiful.

    Can you make a terrarium that resembles a green mountain ⛰ I Thought of this so viewers can have a 360° view, and right outside of it add a wire with an airplane ✈ attached to the glass... Something pilots or passengers in an airplane will most likely will see.
    I'm thinking even small plastic houses 🏘️, Trees 🌳, Animals (ex: bears, deer, horses, etc.), and fill the mountain with moss grass... or even a small island 🏝 but a tropical one.

      Sure, you can use whatever plants are available to you. Yours will probably work much better though.

    Hello I am in western Pa as well and I am wondering where you go to find all of these plants etc and what time of year do you go
    ?

    Hopefully I'm not bothering you any, but is it okay to have a decomposer such as a mushroom in your terrarium? I'm trying my hand with terrariums and after putting everything in, I noticed a young, orange mushroom growing on some moss.
    I'm just wanting to make sure so I know whether to replant it back outside or leave it be.

    Thank you so much for doing this. I'm also interested in a native terrarium. I live in a similar climate, we get freezes in the winter also, but longer and colder than western PA. I have 2 questions. 1) When is the best time to collect, I'd guess spring or fall. 2) What do you do about winter? The native plants are used to a freeze/low-light cycle. We can't easily do that in our homes. Thanks again!

      No you don't have to. It mostly removes any smells, but can also keep standing water clean longer and you're welcome.

    Thank you very much man,this makes me to be open mind. Before, I thought terrarium is an expensive hobby, after watching this i decided to build my own terrarium with my surrounding materials.
    Love from Indonesia, no homo.
    One question, is it okay to not include springtails?
    Subs from me.

    I have a plant I cannot identify. The plant looks somewhat like the moss growing to the right of what I think is creeping cedar, but It is much taller. I has the same needle type shape of the moss, growing to the right of creeping cedar, I think the plant in the middle is creeping cedar.
    I live in the Piedmont/mountain area of NC.It grows selectively in groups, and appears to spread by roots. Rhizome? So far,it is a hearty plant that grows well in my terrarium. If anybody could possibly tell me what they think the plant is I would be very appreciative for any info. Thanks....

    Hi Tanner,
    Is it better to use materials from outside, without cleaning them or baking the soil etc, or is it better to completely sterelize everything? In my case, my terrariums never last longer than 8 months before they turn brown and sour... I always have a false bottom, a charcoal layer and isopods and/or springtails, but nonetheless, everything always dies... what is the perfect formula?

    Cool video, I have two questions: is it important that the terrarium is airtight? what happens if it is not? and second question: what is to expect of this terrarium in 6, 12 months? all plants dead? half dead? all alive and growin so you need to prune them? Thanks!

    I wonder if you ever thought about adding mycology in the wet land terrariums ? or is it doomed in first place. experiment a lot with making mushrooms in habitat on terasse made with things from fre wood, mostly King oisters and regulary oyster shrooms. The mycelium from self eluminating spieces alllso a real matter for me atm ;)

    Topsoil underneath leaves of great because it’s typically high in microbial and beneficial soil organisms. Also because it’s in the process of decomposing the leaf litter which literally recycled nutrients back into the topsoil

    Thanks for all this amazing info. I came across one of your videos and learned these existed. I was looking for containers the next day. Now, three days after I found you channel. I now have my first Closed Local Terrarium. And I am from North West PA, which it seems like you are very close to. I got a free beetle and a newt. I'm gonna see if they can survive in my terrarium.

    You left out telling us what you have on these terrariums for light. I have several kinds of small plants right out in front
    of my house, but they are in direct sunlight most of the day. I've seen lots of those ferns, but usually they are in shade.
    Well at least half of the day they are in shade. But back to the light for the terrarium. Can you show us the light fixtures ?
