This charming travelogue of Cuba was one of RKO's Vagabond Adventure Series and dates to 1933. It was produced when Fidel Castro was only 7 years old, and at a key moment in Cuban history. In 1924, Gerardo Machado had been elected president. During his administration, tourism increased markedly, and American-owned hotels and restaurants were built to accommodate the influx of tourists. The tourist boom led to increases in gambling and prostitution. The Wall Street Crash of 1929 led to precipitous drops in the price of sugar, political unrest, and repression. Protesting students, known as the Generation of 1930, turned to violence in opposition to the increasingly unpopular Machado. A general strike (in which the Communist Party sided with Machado), uprisings among sugar workers, and an army revolt forced Machado into exile in August 1933. He was replaced by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada. In September 1933, the Sergeants' Revolt, led by Sergeant Fulgencio Batista, overthrew Cespedes. A five-member executive committee (the Pentarchy of 1933) was chosen to head a provisional government. Ramon Grau San Martin was then appointed as provisional president. Grau resigned in 1934, leaving the way clear for Batista, who dominated Cuban politics for the next 25 years, at first through a series of puppet-presidents. The period from 1933 to 1937 was a time of "virtually unremitting social and political warfare". Prohibition was still in effect in the USA when this film was made, thus the emphasis on being able to drink alcohol at bars - and the narrator excitedly anticipating when Bacardi rum would be "rushed" to the United States after prohibition was repealed.

The history of Cuba after independence remains yet to be written by impartial scholars:
as ever, there are two different kinds of approach:
    - history as by facts (reports based on archive material)
    - history as by men who made them (biographical)
Central figure is Fulgencio Batista. What do we know about him (President/Dictator)? What kind of a person was he ?
    -facts: contemporary witnesses.
documents to be looked up mainly (guess) at Miami University, serious sources in Cuba itself having most likely been destroyed
    -biographical: contemporary witnesses + family
framework: Cuban society and infrastructure in the early 1900s (> Miami University):
What chances did life hold for a penniless 'selfmade man' without connections in those days?
-theory: and an allround true selfmade man Fulgencio Batista certainly was

Your family doesn't have personal knowledge of what happened? Maybe they were one of the few who had no skin in the game. My family did have skin since my great grandfather belonged to the ABC Party. After they booted out Machado they went into a cool civil war against Bautista after the 100 day government (majority ABC Party led) wasn't backed by the US and desolved. The US wanted to support a strongman and not a government representing more and more] interests of the nation.
I dont speak or read Spanish but have found 10-15 books/large articles/mini pamphlets on 1930s Cuba that I thought were well done so that are out there. I'd start though reading all the US telegrams and correspondence to and from Ambassador Summer (if I remember correctly) 1932-36.

I'm surprised Cuba grew henequen, the plantations originated in Yucatan from where the plant is endemic and for a long time Yucatan enjoyed its monopoly until seedlings were illegally transported and planted in other nations, such as Cuba (as mentioned), Brazil and West Africa. The way it was grown in the Yucatan though was awful, Mayan peasants were enslaved and exploited for the benefit of a few creole Hacienda owners. It's sad but peasants in Central and even other parts of Mexico were treated more humanly than how the very racist Yucatan Hacendados, known as "La Casta Divina" treated the Mayans. But that's another story and by the way these Hacendados were expropiated in 1937 but they hid their money partially in banks New Orleans and New York but most did it guess were... Cuban banks. When Castro took over many exHacendados lost fortunes when bank vaults were "taken over". One former governor of Yucatan and landowner before the Mexican Revolution by then a very old man lost millions in gold and other valuable objects he stored at a bank vault in Havana when he was out of the country during the revolution and during the 1920s. He went back home but assumed his money and jewels were safe in his private vault in Havana but in comes Castro in 1958 and lo and behold, his was one of the first vaults they "nationalized".

I'm surprised you didn't know that all the Worlds land was once connected, in other words, their are parts in southern regions of Cuba where cactus is grown do to the arid soil.

    • @roverworld7218
      @roverworld7218 5 місяців тому

@mannyrodriguez5453 I know, but it wasn't at least until the 19th Century the plant was probably grown as a crop and by the Mayans its use its pretty recent, probably from the 1100s. It was seen being used by natives in Yucatan but not Cuba in the 1500s, just like Casava and some Caribbean plants were unknown until brought into the "Mainland" from the Caribbean and South America by Spaniards.
On a second note, Yucatan and Cuba were once connected, but at least two ice ages and one near extinction would have eliminated the plant. And Henequen is an agave (like the ones used to distill tequila) not a Cactus. And it has been verified it is a native Yucatan Peninsula plant. The British, who had settled illegally in what is today Belize stole and/or smuggled seedlings and replanted them in Brazil and West Africa, the Government from Central Mexico tried to do so in the Northeast, without much success and its probable some transplanting occurred earlier in Colonial times or early 1800s when the plant was not a moneymaker yet.

      Good observation.
Give little weight to the argument that Cuba would be treated similarly to Puerto Rico. Globally influential Cuba in 2021 is very different than defenseless war booty Puerto Rico in 1898 for the following reasons:
      1) Location. As Phillip II observed 450 years ago: "Quien posee la isla de Cuba tiene la llave del Nuevo Mundo." Cuba was the Springboard for the exploration and or conquest of the American southeast, Mexico, Central America and northern South America. It was Cuba's location that allowed her to help win the American Revolutionary War. Most recently, it was the Soviets who used Cuba's location as an unsinkable 800 mile long aircraft carrier with nuclear sub bases for their weekly nuclear bomber runs up the Atlantic coast and nuclear sub activity just off our coast.
Cuba's 19 deepwater harbors in the middle of the Caribbean basin and next door to the Panama Canal, Mississippi, GOM and East Coast ports SCREAMS money making business opportunities. Singapore has become a micro Super Power with just ONE harbor. Imagine what we can do with 19 of them. These deep water harbors make Cuba a natural logistic center for the Americas capable of rivaling Holland and Singapore in business and lend themselves for the creation of Free Trade Zones capable of rivaling Hong Kong and Panama. State of the art submarines and other warships can be built in these harbors. We can make America and especially the South much wealthier and influential through business. Think high paying jobs! Cuba's strategic location makes it the natural telecom and air cargo hub for the Caribbean basin. Think more high paying jobs!
      2) Ethnic and Racial Bigotry has greatly diminished since 1898. After the collapse of the Spanish Empire and defeat of Napoleon, the Anglo-Teutons nations of Northern Europe became globally dominant for the first time in history. Up to this point most of the relevant Western History had been written by Latin Europe for 2000 years. This moment in the Sun overwhelmed them with fantasies of ethnic and racial superiority. It was into this milieu that conquered Puerto Rico was absorbed. WWI & WWII and the nuclear arm's race terminated with deadly results these fantasies.
      3) Cuba is far from weak and defenseless. Unlike Puerto Rico in 1898, Cuba today would have available for immediate rapid deployment 250,000 well educated bilingual and bicultural Cuban Americans under the age of 45. 10,000 of these native English speaking Cuban Americans have graduated from the best Universities in the World. Additionally, Cuba has the best educated Hispanics and blacks in the world plus the most PhDs per capita in the world. We are very well positioned.
      4) Demographics. Cuba has an enormous White population (65%) mostly in the rural heartland that can easily intermarry with rural White America within two generations. It is White America that will always dominate the US because they compose well over 70% of the US population. Appalachian Whites and Cuban Rural Whites are a natural combination having historical claims to their land going back 300 plus years. Both share Celtic characteristics of individualism, pride and emphasis on intuition over reason. Highly educated Cuban blacks will naturally seek to marry Americans. The products of such unions will propel Cuba and especially the South to a leadership role in the Western Hemisphere unseen since before the Civil War. If we can succeed in grafting Cuba as an assimilated bilingual bicultural Southern State, it will be hands down the coolest state in the country within two generations. Remember, Cortez's Conquistadors married women from the Aztec's conquered and subjugated tribes. Today their descendants run Meso America.
The American Leftist controlled MSM (fake news) does not want multi-cultural brainstorming discussions like this to take place among Cubans. The American Leftist controlled press labels these discussions “politically incorrect”. Unless we Cubans leverage our incredible multi-cultural heritage as an advantage we will not challenge NY, TX and California. BTW, my maternal haplogroup is from Senegal and I have 3.4% native American blood. I am convinced that the Leftist MSM sometimes intentionally stirs the pot among Southern Whites and Blacks to keep them disunited. We can NEVER permit this to take place. What Cuban Whites, Blacks and their mixed race offspring have accomplished unido during the past 60 years is extraordinary. Nothing close to this exists in America.
      5) We know how the whole global system works inside out. We are highly liked and respected and as a result we have amigos and supporters everywhere in the world who want Cuba to succeed.
      6) Size. Cuba is 12 times larger than Puerto Rico, right next door to the US and far less densely populated. It takes less time to take a car ferry ride to Cuba than to fly to Puerto Rico.
      7) Cuba's highly educated population would be America's natural gateway to El Dorado (Africa and LatAm). Think more high paying jobs!
Like Germans during reunification 30 years ago, we Cubans and Cuban Americans must have a detailed game plan. Less repetitive circular talking and more brainstorming and succinct writing. Our game plan must focus on transforming Cuba into a diversified service driven economy.
