I started an LGS in August of 2023 after about 10 years of planning. In some ways it is good to get going during a low time so that you are ready to take advantage of market up ticks and shifting trends. Like you said, you need a relationship with distribution to get just about anything. I agree that direct to consumer is more and more an issue. I really think LGSs should be focused on building personal relationships and being a "third home". Although that is not a very scalable model. Best of luck with the new store!
Agreed, however it really depends on where you're located - in Dallas the market is VERY saturated and most players frequent 4-6 stores, so it's hard to become someone's "home". Now if you're in Austin and there isn't another store for another hour or two and you have a dozen or so regulars ready to come support..I'd say give it a shot. Very happy to hear you started your shop and hope it's doing well!
Game stores seem like playing the retail game on hard mode! How many other industries have manufacturers actively trying to prevent retailers from being profitable, or cutting them out entirely?

Thanks for ruining my day…I’m about to retire from the Air Force and I really wanted to open a store. 😂
Invest in a successful store, and enjoy a smaller role in the operations - DO NOT START A STORE. You will hate your life, trust me.
