  • Matsuura MAM72-63V machining a V8 engine block from solid material. This is almost identical to the video posted previously - only this one does not have the music - as requested by many! Enjoy the awesome tones of the Matsuura Maxia spindle creating this epic block.

    Back in the 70's i worked for a smallish custom automobile manufacture in Chisinau, Moldova .Our specialty was high end automobiles for the soviet elite. We built engine blocks and other components out of cast aluminum billets that were of similar or superior quality to the matsura v8 block, although due to price considerations and time constraints most of them were in- line 4 or sometimes 3 cylinder variants. Modern cnc technology of course wasn't available in soviet block countries at that time so the machining had to be done entirely by hand, using a file, angle grinder and drill motor. The soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December '79 put the kye-bosk on the operation and we were defunded. Most examples have been lost but some of our most exemplary work remains on display at the Bulgakov museum in Moscow. The 3032 cc 4 cylinder engine was intended to power Leonid Brezhnev's luxury skiff that he used when visiting his villa on the eastern shore of the Baikal, but with his poor health and the exigencies of the war the engine was harnessed for use in an armaments factory outside of Minsk, where it was used to power a 17 ton flywheel press that was use to stamp out such necessities as differential covers for the T72 tank and and belly armor for their helicopter gun ships.

      Good luck getting the same properties out of a porous sintered part as you would from a forging. There's certainly alot you can do with SLS or bound metal FDM, but you won't get the same level of precision and strength as a part machined from billet or a forging.

    • @mpetersen6
      @mpetersen6 4 роки тому

      I can see where the technology will get there eventually. Even after printing you are still going to have a lot of machine work to do. I really would not trust threaded holes that are 3D printed vs one drilled to the proper size and tapped using form taps. Much less any of the extremely critical surfaces, and bores. Especially in aluminum. I would not be surprised however if automotive or other engine manufacturers are using a 3D process for prototypes vs having to make special castings or welding for one of's.

    Just plain aluminum melted down is 6063 aluminum. But I'm sure they used special alloys such as 6105 or stronger for a block application. My company actually hauled all the bullet to Fontana to press into that little Giant ladder. Which had to be strong because they guaranteed 300 lbs in any 18 inches of the ladder not to break. That is to say you can put the ladder on two other ladders sideways and you could put 300 lbs in the middle no problem. You also have 6061, 6105, 6063 and one other. That ladder they made one million lbs worth per month. All 6105 alloy.
