    Red was actually a traditional color of mourning in old Ireland. It was associated with blood, death and tragedy. Which makes the line in the song make more sense.

    The song is an Irish woman singing about her beloved as he goes off to war. It is thought that it might be about the Irish soldiers who joined the Jacobites in the 1688 revolution and fought to restore the Catholic monarch who had been overthrown by the English parliament. The Irish soldiers ended up having to withdraw to France following the Jacobite defeat in the war and the treaty of Limerick, leaving behind their homes in Ireland.
    I wish I was on yonder hill
    'Tis there I'd sit and cry my fill
    Until every tear would turn a mill
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (And may you go safely my darling.)
    iúil, siúil, siúil a rún
    Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
    Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And may you go safely my darling.)
    I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel
    I'll sell my only spinning wheel
    To buy my love a sword of steel
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (And may you go safely my darling.)
    Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún
    Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
    Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And may you go safely my darling.)
    I'll dye my petticoats, I'll dye them red
    And 'round the world I'll beg my bread
    Until my parents shall wish me dead
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (And may you go safely my darling.)
    Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún
    Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
    Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And may you go safely my darling.)
    I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
    I wish I had my heart again
    And vainly think I'd not complain
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (And may you go safely my darling.)
    Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún
    Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
    Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And may you go safely my darling.)
    But now my love has gone to France
    To try his fortune to advance
    If he e'er comes back, 'tis but a chance
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (And may you go safely my darling.)
    Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún
    Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
    Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
    Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
    (Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And may you go safely my darling.)
