- The great British film director Ken Russell died on Sunday. He was a friend and a hero to me and made some of the best, the most exciting and the most experimental films in all of cinema.

What a genius! Ken Russell who i discovered in 1969 with 'Women in Love' changed my life! I am lucky enough to have met him and his lovely wife Lisi a few times and my goal was to be in or connected to a Ken Russell film - alas! that will never happen now. But three top favourite films of all time in order are 'The Devils'; 'The Music Lovers' and 'Women in Love'. Rest in Peace Kenneth!!! What a bloke!
a very moving and obviously very personal tribute. RIP Ken
I watched The Devils for the first time the day Ken died (and also the Hell on Earth documentary). The Devils is a masterpiece. Rest in Peace.
I think, whenever someone dies and Mark does his little tribute to them they all have a great warmth to them. The Woodward and Pothlethwait one's were superv but this is just woderful. It's true Russel's work was insane, but in the best possible way.
we need the directors cut of the devil's. Warner brothers have no right to stop us seeing the masterpiece that is the devil's.
Was moved by this tribute. Well done Kermode and RIP Ken the genius
Ashamed to say I've never seen a Ken Russell film but will be renting Women In Love this evening for a showing.
Touching tribute to a great man.
great tribute x
yup. I knew he gonna make a dedicated video about him.
RIP Ken Russell
Excellent piece, Mark. He will be missed, but as you say, the legacy is going to last.
I'll never forget seeing The Devils for the first time on television and being absolutely knocked out. I hope someone ( hopefully Criterion) grows a pair and releases the uncut version. I know this would something that I would want in my permanent collection. Ken Russell made movies, excessive perhaps, but they were excessive in the best sense of the word and they overwhelmed the viewer in a manner that modern movies do not. I would liked to have seen Altered States on a big screen. Brilliant.
Great commentary. I'm about to watch Altered States. I can't think of any director today that you can compare to Russell in terms of style.
great end picture
I loved the fact he never compromised. The Establishment viewed him as a rebel and never really took him to their heart.
The BBC or BFI should show some of the films he made for Monitor. Elgar and the one about Delius come to mind.
I thought about Mark when i heard about this. Never seen a Ken Russell film, but i always wanted to. Tommy and The Devils is two movies i really want to check out. Really hard to get on DVD here in Europe.
@themenaceanish Well, I liked it with both of my accounts to make up for it. :D I know you have a sensitive animosity towards the British, but if you get the chance, do try to give this guy's movies a watch. He's a master of the craft, and he made cinema that will outlast the both of us -- I for one have derived immense joy from viewing his work over the years. Thank you for the tribute, Mark, I'm off to watch The Devils again. RIP Ken. :)
RIP Ken.
@MsBkirk Thanks. I ought to have remembered that.
I think themenaceanish should give us his top fave five films and directors, and tell us why.
In respect of one of the worlds finest directors, and film critics for that matter, please stop feeding the troll.
RIP Ken
I suppose Im gonna have to watch the devils now
@GordonMorrice One of the best statements I've read. You should write for a film magazine.
Can I pass it off as my own?
@themenaceanish I've heard you use that excuse several times now.
@TheDensley7 Whenever he's losing on UA-cam, he says he has "friends" to catch up to. ;)
@themenaceanish I'm sure your mom and dad must be very proud.
@themenaceanish From the lurking I've been doing you do seem obsessed.
@drplbiftin I send them a PM, but so far they haven't done anything.
ken russell dead.....paul ws anderson still making films.....we are truly alone.
@TheDensley7 Nah, he hasn't replied to me on that yet.
I click on a filmmaker tribute video and I see an argument in the comments about UK vs. US healthcare.
Stay classy, UA-cam.
@themenaceanish Out of those 7 sentences you wrote, 5 of them (the important ones) were wrong. I don't have time to correct you on all accounts, but let's just say that I am right and you are wrong.
@themenaceanish Okay.
@themenaceanish Bale isn't an American either. And like I said, I'm not a Brit, so I've got no national stakes in this discussion. I just like to educate people on the truth. And right now, you are my special little project.
@themenaceanish Lost me bud. What you saying? Look into it.
@themenaceanish He's insulting you? Oh, well, we can't have that now, can we?
Where did he find out about how great the US standard of healthcare is in comparison? If he looks at the list of greatest healthcare systems in the world he may notice that around only 2 systems in the top 20 have an entirely privately funded model and that the UK is way above the US in terms of quality of care. That's it, the decision is made, I will never ever ever ever ever believe anything I read in any comments on the internet anywhere from now on.
*sigh* Obvious troll is obvious.
R.I.P. Ken, and thank you for everything.
@themenaceanish He's a Brit. Ask him yourself.
@drplbiftin Whenever a to[ic like this is talked about, it always ends up this way. The war will get a mention soon enough.
@TheDensley7 I think this boy's paranoid, he's just seeing Brits everywhere, lol.
@themenaceanish yep you run along and talk to you're imaginary friends happy trails Tex!
@themenaceanish Chris Nolan is a Brit. And I'm not, so drop the "your."
Transformers 3 was so good, Shia gave up.
@themenaceanish great choices aside from Michael Bay and Quentin Tarantino when he's not at his best. Transformers 3? Really? Oh dear.
@harizotoh7
@themenaceanish So, now that we're alone you wanna explain to me why you're so obsessed with Britain?
@TheDensley7 Hey man, can you explain to me why this menace-guy has this "Us vs. Them" mentality toward non-American cinema? He comes across as little more than a child to me.
@themenaceanish I guess he got tired of you. Don't you ever get tired of yourself?
@themenaceanish Listen up. He's from Venezuela. I'm from Denmark. We're not British.
huh
@themenaceanish You still here? . Have a little respect for the up loader of the video and the memory of Ken Russel .
Go back to trolling your Pinkie Pie and Xbox video,s .
@themenaceanish I have no special needs -- Kermode rants notwithstanding. ;)
@themenaceanish About your xenophobia.
@themenaceanish Stanley Kubrick was more intelligent than them all, and guess what, he moved here.
@TheDensley7 What confuses me is that he seems to forget he's just a consumer. We all are. Why should movie discussions be this tribalistic and war-like? It doesn't make the films any more interesting, it just results in lame dick-waving fan postures.
