Some useful gumpf; click on SHOW MORE (just below).
    It's scored using Sibelius 7.5
I've been playing Horizons for years on the piano - and also on agnostic (as Steve called it in the video below) guitar though not very well! :)
So this time I've done things a little differently…
I actually sorted out the score first (for both instruments) and it's based on the way Steve has been playing Horizons live for at least the last 10 years which I personally prefer over the recorded version on Foxtrot.
In particular, I used • Steve Hackett's Genesi... (Royal Albert Hall 2013) for my main reference as you can see very clearly how he plays it.
I then played it 'live' into my usual DAW (Presonus Studio One 3) using Modartt's Pianoteq 6.
So this is an actual live performance, warts'n'all :)
The following notes are also in the piano PDF.
The tempo of 104bpm is purely advisory.
This is definitely a piece that calls for plenty of rubato! :)
The positioning in the score of the sustain pedal advice is deliberate.
I do NOT use the sustain (mistakenly sometimes called the 'loud') pedal at all during any of the soft pedal sections ('una corda' thru to 'tre corda').
This is because I am trying to emulate the sound of guitar harmonics so I actually try to hold on the notes for as long as they would sustain on a guitar.
This isn't an exact science and is difficult to score properly too so here's some extra guidance.
I play the first 3 bars (and likewise when these are played again near the end) as follows:
The left hand is played as written, whereas with the right hand I hold each note down until I have to play that same note again.
In bars 28 & 29, I play exactly as written except that I hold the 'B' (at the beginning) for the whole bar.
All this is fairly tricky to do at first but I feel it's worth persevering with :)
Of course, if you'd rather just hold the sustain pedal down over these parts and simply play all the notes as quavers (1/8th notes), then it's a reasonable alternative, but to my ears it doesn't have the same effect so the above is how I do it :)
In bars 24-25, each single 'D' in the right hand is meant to be played with the soft pedal down but I couldn't easily mark this on the score so that's why it's mentioned here.
Finally, you'll notice that bar 12 has a bracketed note ('F#'). Steve doen't play this note live but it is on the studio version and I think it sounds better on the piano with it, so I play it :)
I've really enjoyed doing one of Steve's Genesis acoustic guitar pieces for piano, so… ;)

Keep these coming!! Who would've known that there's a bar of 13/8 thrown in... Very Genesis of Steve haha

To be honest the time signature for that bar may or may not be right! It just seemed the simplest way to notate it.
There's so much playing around with note timing going on at that point that I could equally have changed a few note values and made it 6/4 or 7/4.
But 13/8 seemed the best compromise :)

    Hi,
you have been a great help, are you considering the 11th earl of mar at all?

    • @ElektrikHob
      @ElektrikHob  4 роки тому

I did work it out years ago and occasionally play it just on piano so at some point...
I'm currently working on something else from W&W and have a few other Genesis ditties in the pipeline, but 11thEoM would certainly be a fun one to commit to 'paper'.
      Watch this space (channel)... :)
