Good choice.. because Porsches have limited space for the exhaust it’s naturally short and 99% of aftermarket ones are boomy and droney factory everytime!
Hi Volkswizrd.........came across your channel as part of my pre-purchase research on an R8....so now own a V8 manual which i love. I am a Porsche guy by trade and have owned a number...currently own a 981 S and 996 TT. I would be interested in your thoughts on the GTS vs R8 please ? They are very similar in handling but i feel the 981 is just a little more agile and nimble.. ????
Hope videos helped. Definitely the 981 GTS is more of a sports car than an R8 as it's small, lighter and as you say nimbler. It's also easier to drive on the limits of grip which are lower than R8. In many ways the R8 is a supercar as its so low and wide and you do pay for that, it's really only on the track when you can push its limits, that was where the journos fell in love back in 2006. If you know how to drive, the 981 will be more engaging on the road for sure. It's also MUCH louder and sounds more of a supercar than the R8 and it's a natural convertible so you can enjoy all that noise without much compromise. I still get excited at seeing an R8 but I wouldn't swap simply because if you use these cars (I did 10k in 10 months in GTS) the 981 is easier to live with (2 good boots, better mpg) and more exciting to drive (it tried to kill me in week 1) though R8 has definitely more presence on the road and can be (just about) called a supercar - but you can't see it while driving :)
@@volkswizard thank you so much for your detailed reply and really happy you’re enjoying the Boxster. ..very interesting… yes, whilst they are mid engine and superb at handling ,..as I found , when they do let go they really do let go …😀 I do not think we will ever be without a Boxster. The 996 turbo has since been sold and we have a 996C2 which is as Standard and vanilla as it gets. A very unremarkable example in every way, but we love it. The next Boxster upgrade for us would be the 981 Spyder or indeed, the 4 .0 GTS, but both are ridiculously expensive at the moment. I’m about to change the exhaust on the R8 for a top gear valve system and also swap out the coil, over springs for Swift. Looking forward to this years driving season 👍🏾..Good luck
why do you need to take off the entire bumper for the exhaust.. I left my bumper on and got the exhaust out from underneight.. Didn't even have a lift back then
I can't recall now but it was a tight fit and bumper off seemed easier that struggling. Also much easier for filming to show what's behind the bumper though not sure that was a consideration at the time.
That is true Andrew, Porsche tend to be hard to improve upon from the factory as they have the budget to do things right - ride/handling/brakes/interiors and exhaust!
Andrew - belatedly - did Solihull have the exhaust section in stock / was it easily ordered? (I may need to do the same on my GTS but have been told the part is on back order…) Enjoying your GTS story; sorry to see it go!
The bit that came off at 2.00. Do you still have it? Looking to buy :) This part has split in 2 at the spindle on my wife's Boxster and Porsche want to replace the whole exhaust! Not sure why or how the part split at the spindle as the exhaust flap seems to rotate freely. I've put it down to corrosion. Any advice on whether you think it could be welded together at the spindle would be appreciated! Thanks and your channel is great!!
Sold it, now I know why! Best thing to do is calling around a few Porsche specialists and see if they have some knocking around as chances are they have done what I did and will do. Failing that welding is worth a try. Glad you are enjoying the channel and thank you for your support :)
Right choice going with Porsche exhaust...good job on the refitting...my local Kwik Fit is hiring if your interested....enjoyed the video as always..👍👍
Great video.....slightly envious!! Not of the car but the small workshop. I know it's your business, it just looks great and I'd love something similar in order to tinker!!! Keep the videos coming 👍
Always time for sport mode - you made that look easy as didn’t realise the two halves join that way - makes me wish for an akrapovic for my renault as in sport it pops and bangs a bit quietly for my liking not that I aim to scare horses :)
I did think about that and was already to do it, I even cut the spindle to try and turn it with a screwdriver, it was as if the spindle had welded itself to the body, it just did not want to move. I can't even see welding have been sufficiently strong to sustain the pressure needed to get the flap to move as a very small surface area.
'Fisherman who caught his biggest fish' 🤣😂 very good. 👍 Always enjoy the odd 'dirty gloves' episodes, thanks Andrew. Can't believe this channel doesn't have more subscribers... c'mon peeps, spread the word to fellow motoring enthusiasts with a penchant for the VAG world 👍 PS: I suspect a 💩 load of time went into this video vis filming, editing etc.
Thanks Graeme T! The similarities in the thumbnail pose to the big fish posed hasn't escaped me! Working on cars and filming it is probably the hardest thing you can do but glad to record all this stuff to benefit others.
Can you please provide a link to the eBay Porsche centre caps - I have ha da quick look but can not find them. Many thanks and a great channel by the way!!
Thanks! Looks like it’s ended but you can ask www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-Colour-Crested-Wheel-Centre-Caps-911-Cayman-Boxster-Cayenne-black-/154803970894?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m2548.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0
You see a whole exhaust for £1500 but with the Porsche one it's £750 for the half of the exhaust and £500 for the R&D behind it which not many aftermarket manufacturers can compete with (apart from say Akrapovic and bet they aren't £1500!).
@@volkswizard I paid £950 for a Hayward and Scott catback for my previous Lexus ISF. Amazing V8 Merlin Spitfire noise on acceleration and no drone, some aftermarket companies do get it right at a half decent price, but I’m now loving my current ISF with its original exhaust 🤷🏼♂️
£1200 is a lot for half an exhaust but if your a petrolhead your a petrolhead
That is true Charlie and when it sounds sooo good it's the best value exhaust you will ever buy!
You're...
Your audio is clipping badly, you need a rethink on mic levels and placement
Good choice.. because Porsches have limited space for the exhaust it’s naturally short and 99% of aftermarket ones are boomy and droney factory everytime!
Ahh that makes sense! Problem is you only find out after you've fitted it and I really don't want to do it twice!
@@volkswizard yeah totally so many owners have done that! P.s check your instagram inbox 😉😎
My Cayman 981 PSE is broke. Although the actuators move, they don’t open the valves internally. Dealer said they couldn’t fix it. Any ideas?

No point skimping on a car like that - it demands the best!

Thanks 👍Sadly unpleasant new landlords meant I left there a few months later, much happy tinkering on my own drive.
As you know Andrew a new exhaust is going to have a raspy sound until it carbons up. Fantastic video. Keep it genuine parts whenever possible.

For a standard exhaust it's pretty ASBO so I understand why your standard Renault one is quieter.
Couldn't you at least try to weld that shaft lever?

Superb video Andrew. Nice to watch you work and I agree worth the investment. The results speak it all!
all that thrashing about under there you will probably need to spend another £1200 on appointments with me 😆😆😆
If I didn't have a ramp I think I'd be in a lot of a pain doing that work but so far so good
Not much use to you now but you can repair the damaged valve. There's a video on my channel about the PSE and some information on prevention.
Thanks! I did try and repair it as I've done before on VW Audi but something broke off with just gentle levering and that was that.
9:40 I though Snape was dead.
