Porsche 981 Boxster & Cayman chassis bracing mods from the 718!

- It's really really easy to upgrade your 981 with handling mods from the 718 and with bits from the 718 GT4. I took the opportunity to pick up some performance parts from a salvage 718 GT4 for the 981. This applies to the 981 Boxster, 981 Cayman, be it a base, S, GTS or the Spyder
These may not improve the acceleration or top speed of your Porsche but the 718 chassis mods will improve the way it feels providing more direct go kart like handling for the 981.
After the install, I talk you through a ceramic coating my Porsche 981 Boxster / Cayman before taking the car for a nice drive up in the Scottish mountains.
Thanks to Avalon King and Rocketwires for supporting the channel for providing the ceramic coating and leather trim parts for the Porsche interior.

Nice to see another video again! Thanks.
Sorry for the long delay, another will follow as I have more parts in that box!
@@TDS981 Sounds great, looking forward.
Thank you so much for sharing this, you obviously have spent a lot of time researching and trying! Very generous of you to do share it out, also look forward to your PCM mod video, have been contemplating doing this for a while
Thanks 👍
def need to see the PCM mod
Fantastic !! hope to see more videos !
👍👍👍
Fantastic video again
Thanks Matt 👍👍👍
Just found your site yesterday. I like it very much even though i would never do the modifications that you do as i have neither the garage nor the tools required. What your show does is give a better understanding of your porsche. Mine is. 2015 boxster gts. I only have oone critique for those of us who have difficulty with the Scots dialect. I noticed this on the change brake pad video. The video needed a voice over instead of talking while yyou do the work. I will keep watching as you provide very valuable info for us boxster owners.
Thanks Paul, not much I can do about that keep watching and you'll pick it up or turn on the captions 👍
To think of all those Bond movies you missed out on, too 😂
Thanks for this. I plan to do the dog bone. Glad you drilled and secured it. I’ve seen others who installed without doing that. “Love the “what ya waitin for…?”
Thanks, go for it!
Always great. Keep it up. Can't wait to see what the Stereo upgrade is!
Thanks working on it right now 👍
@@TDS981 Ya know, all of us who own a 981 live through those modifications. They are tastefully done and well documented. Right on brother!
@@PhotoWorksInteract 🙏
Thanks again for the mod info.
I recognise those brackets as I got a set with the Cayman (14) ARB parts I bought from the breakers 👍
Thanks, bonus points for getting them with the bar
That sound is so sweet 👌
👍
Really enjoyed that! I have a 981 and love it to bits, but do agree you need to be pushing it before the steering starts to come alive
Yes but when it does it's great
@@TDS981 absolutely! They just flow down the road. Great cars. One of the best imo
I suspect that "dogbone" brace you installed from the 718 is the result of all the frame member cracking that has had Porsche recall a bunch of 981's.
Great video!
Thanks appreciate it, I see your logic but they didn't recall all vehicles the recall was down to a faulty batch, not all cars were effected. The dogbone has recently been introduced and it's on the gt4rs.
@@TDS981 Correct. But I guess they realized that the cast frame members might be on the edge of being too light. That is my theory why they came up with this new part. There is also probably some flexing under load that they wanted to get away from. I have a '14 Cayman S and want to go the X73 route but you simply cannot buy the kit right now, nobody has them.
@@Flies2FLL potentially, although I think this piece is only on the GT cars but if I can get my hands on a 2021/22' 718 I can find out.
Bad luck regarding the parts I know feeling I waited such a long time for the bumper parts.
Thanks for the video. Been subscribed since I got my 981 BS almost a year ago. Have done many of your mods, the Apple CarPlay, GTS taillights and valance, but went for the full X73 off Suncoast, and since I’m trying to make this car replace the 991.2 GT3 and 981 GT4 I had at the track AND be a good road car, I’ve since upgraded the wheels and tyres to the same Cup 2’s that I had on the GT4. OZ make wheels that will do this. I’m all about driving too and the best mod that I’ve done is getting power steering plus enabled. Doesn’t look like you have this. A lot of videos describe it as just more assistance, but it’s actually the variable ratio steering that makes the Boxster drive like a GT4, which has it standard. I’ve also put on the Sport GT steering wheel from the GT3/4 on - only slightly smaller diameter but what a difference to the responsiveness off the car. I was lucky enough to be able to take my wheel off the GT3 to try it on the Boxster before selling the GT3 so I knew that it was worth the investment. You also get the paddles off the newer cars too, which are shorter throw and again make the PDK feel more responsive. Oh, and I’ve done the Cobb tune ECU and PDK as well. Just thought I’d let you know there’s people on the other side of the world with the same disease, and loving it. Looking forward to your PCM video. I had that PCM in the GT3 and the touchscreen was so much better. I hope you have a cheap source for the parts 😢!
Hi thanks, probably the best comment I've ever seen on the channel!
High praise indeed for the car! Mine certainly holds its own against more premium opposition and one of the reasons I like it so much.
I'm tempted by the COBB tune can I have your opinion on that?
I'm going to try the power steering plus mod you suggested too, I noted that there are some other steering settings you can change within PIWIS.
@@TDS981
It’s an awesome car that you can enjoy on public roads without losing your license or being socially irresponsible.
Cobb tune on a Boxster S is great value for money. Think about the GTS… it has 15-20hp more from memory - all ECU tuning. You get this, the all the usual (and minimal on NA engines) tuning for 98 octane to take it to around 350hp. The ECU tune makes very significant difference overtaking. I removed it prior to taking the car to the South Island for a Porsche Club Tour as it had to go to the dealer to get rain sensor coded. That’s when I realised just how much it was worth. I put it back in that night. Still not as worthwhile as the power steer plus in my opinion though - that transforms windy road driving, second gear stuff, both hands on wheel 9-3 no problem.
PDK tune I wasn’t so happy with and took it off after only one trackday. However, by chance I actually decided to try it again yesterday as we have a trackday at Manfeild tomorrow, and I found my stock PDK was sometimes changing up itself even in manual mode. But other times would hit the limiter. GT3 obviously had a much better transmission, and I think the 4RS even better. I was used to the inverted shift lever from the GT3 vs the Boxster and got the Cobb mainly for that.
@@Leong72 thanks for the information, appreciate it, I'm going to try out the power steering tip and report back 👍
@@Leong72 You had the dealer change some software so you got the variable assist power steering - which they label "power steering plus"? The rack is the same but the software is different and it changes the handling? I had a 2024 base 718 for 2 months while the 981 was in the shop and it definitely did have better steering. But I thought that was from the 991.1 Turbo steering rack?
@@autofocuscarsvids719 Correct on both counts. Have your dealer check it, or have a look at your car's build sheet. If it does already have it, then it should be on the list.
Good video! Looks like I have a new piece to buy to compliment the brace I have already. I need to know more about the 718 PCM unit you teased there!
Cheers Adrian, next video we will go through the process. I spent a lot of time working it out but got there in the end.
@@TDS981 Look forward to seeing it 👍🏼
Exciting stuff! Good work….
Thanks Prof 👍
The part number for the bracket listed in the description does not match the part number on the bag at 1:21 of the video. Is it a different bracket?
A few of questions.
1) You say the bracket is "99633377700", but I think it may be "99633377701".
2) are the bolts that go thru the new bracket actually "90037815901" Bolt, Transmission, or are they "90037805501" Bolt, Stabilizer Bar?
3) did you previously upgrade the anti-roll suspension stabilizer bar and do you recommend doing that "while you're in there" assuming the GT4 or X73 bar is stiffer?
4) what bolts/nuts did you use to secure the new dogbone to the baseplate after drilling the holes?
5) I assume it's ok to reuse the bushings as you did?
Thanks again.
1. The number is provided is correct, you will already have the 01 number installed on your car and you need it to be flat
2. 900 378 159 01
3. Yes I did there is another video on that topic, have a watch. Good to do that it provides the biggest impact. Gt4 ar bar has 3 settings I assume it is stiffer but adjustable to your preference.
4. Stainless with washers up and under and nuts, the 718 has nuts welded on already so buying bolts alone is no use.
5. Bushings are fine if condition is ok, get some rubber friendly grease for bar ending 14, bar ending 15 is thicker and has new bushings, see video for details.
I wish we had roads like that in Florida but you can keep the corrosion. =)
Ha ha, that's nothing but yes I was traumatised when I saw the mess the diagonals were in, they will be coming off for powder coating I think.
Where did you get that ducktail spoiler? Looks amazing and I need one for my GTS 🤩
Is it the original Porsche one for the GT4/Spyder?
Yes it's a Porsche part from the Spyder, there is an entire video on the install on my channel go and check it out 👍
Omg, just realized I already watched your vid about the ducktail last year haha 😂
Ha ha brilliant. Well now you remember go and get one, I see more and more 981s with them now but OEM is always the way to go.
Sounds very interesting, have you got the part numbers for everything used?
Have a read in the video description 👍🏼
@@TDS981 Apologies I hadn't looked, thanks for the video! :D
Sounds great. What exhaust is that?
Standard/stock one, Porsche Sports Exhaust
Excellent video. Quick ask, you have the sport exhaust is it all factory? Any maintenance required on those exhaust plungers?
Thanks, yes all factory, I have a regular routine of checking them and try to avoid starting and stopping without a drive in-between. Otherwise moisture build up can cause corrosion.
@@TDS981 Thank you for taking time to reply. I had a 2015 981S that some knucklehead ran a red light and center punched car passenger side. Took me a year and a half to find a replacement a few months ago. Now I have a 2014 S with sport exhaust and X73 sport suspension. Mine is not as loud as yours appears to be.
@@WFORacer watch my PSE video and see if your system is performing ok.
@@TDS981 Sorry to keep asking questions, checked my plungers for lack of a better word. Facing rear of car the plunger on left side moved freely, plunger on right side also moved but had more resistance. Best way to describe as if it had a stronger spring. Is this normal or should both sides move in and out with equal resistance?
@@WFORacer the important thing is that they move and there is resistance, you've potentially caught it from seizing early, keep it moving and lubricate until they, spring back on their own with resistance to your push.
Hey Daryl. 12 months on, how you are you finding these mods working on the car? Would you still recommend doing them? Would love to know where you're at with them...
Yes very pleased, but I've actually done more since then (x73). I'm overdue an update on here sorry about that.
@@TDS981 Thanks Daryl. That's all the encouragment I need to plan the work. I rather like the PASM, but would be interested in an X73 update! Hope you're still enjoying the car...
@@christianpratt yes I am and I post regular updates on Instagram 👍🏼
@@TDS981 Good stuff! (insta - I'll look you up on there...)
Your video wasn't clear enough to make out the part numbers. Do you mind sharing those part numbers - dogbone, collar, screws plus the subframe piece and rear swaybar. Thanks.
Part number was on the screen for the dog bone just hit pause @ 3:32.

Good afternoon
ask ? Where did you buy the general exhaust outlets? you just put that in it. ? it sounds incredible
I hope you can tell me the place where you bought them
thank you so much

It's how they sound from factory 👍🏼
good night
Thank you very much for answering
OK, got it
I have a 2016 Porch Boxter, same color Red.
but it doesn't sound like yours
My car has a single outlet (it doesn't have 2 outlets like yours)
so thank you very much

@@jaimegpppz3552 you need to retrofit Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) with switchable valves.
perfect
I understand
Could you help me, do you know where to buy it?
or directly at the porch agency
Again, thank you very much

you are awesome
🤣🤣🤣
Nice video, I need your help. I'm intrested in one of the braces you filmed.
It's not the dog bone shaped one. It's the 2nd one. It's rectangular in shape. I need the part number if you have it.
Good luck finding that part, they don't seem to be available for purchase. I couldn't even verify its existence when I found it. Watch the video again and you might see the part number.
@@TDS981 lol, thank you. I watched it several times. I could never make it out.
Hi
Hello
Nice! 😛🔥
Ps. Where did you got the LED side indicators from?
You have a Link?
Thx 😄
Hey 👍, they came from a 718 on eBay sorry.

Clear LED side markers are Porsche OEM parts, can get from any Porsche dealer or Suncoast Parts in Florida, US.

I want to add some down force to front end..
.?
Ok
Just buy a 718 lol 😅
🤔 not for me.
