  • For the last two and a half years I have been building bookcases for my local bookstore in what has been my biggest job ever. In this video I jump straight into mid production as I complete over twenty bookcases. Thanks for watching, please leave your thoughts below.

Thank you. Look online for a high quality shelf pin boring jig that is designed to be used with a plunge router. It is time consuming but you will get nice results

If i may wonder, how many working hours have been spend making the 70 bookcases? I would think that this is your full time job? Or am I seeing this wrong? I'm alway's wondering about these kind of things because I wonder how the prices where set.
If we are not producing these kind of bookcases from beginning to end in maximum 6-7 working day's with constantly 2 guy's working we would already be loosing money on these kind of bookcases because hardly anyone in europe is willing to pay more for these.
Ofcourse we saw/drill/prepare everything on our automatic nesting machine (yes also if it's veneered), everything would be edged on our industrial edgebander and all the boxes clamped in a carcass clamp. Rounded elements veneered in our membrane press ...
But without these machines I wouldn't be able to produce these at a fair price point ...

I do not have the total number of hours, but it has all happened over the span of about 2 and half years. It has not quite been a full time job just on these cases as I have had many other jobs throughout this process. An extensive remodel of the bookstore was taking place simultaneously so this accounted for part of the reason for the pace. Also, as time went on the project developed and pivoted in different ways. For where I am at in my business with the machines in my shop, it has been a well worth while job, though I cannot speak for a larger production shop like the one you described. Thanks

An honest question...do you still like making book cases or is it i just a job at this point? I've owned two businesses to this day and both I have owned for over 25 years and both were hobbies turned into businesses and both I really loved 25 years ago, but now they are just income. I find that the slogan "love what you do everyday and you will never work a day in your life' is nonsense for most and should be "love what you do everyday and you will stop loving it."

I'm still at the point where I love my job and am motivated pretty much daily. As far as the bookcases go, I will be happy to be finished with this job as it is very repetitive especially at this scale. Although, I'm very thankful for such a huge opportunity and the boost it has given my small business.
