Chan 老师,谢谢你。 I have a question about 正在。When you use 在 you put at the end 呢. But you didn't do that when using 正在. Does that mean you can't do that here? Or would that be weird to a native speaker?
Example: 经理正在开会呢. Would this be correct? Or can't you use 呢 in this example?
Yes, correct.
@@EverydayChinese sorry my bad. I asked multiple questions. To be clear. You can use 在正 and 呢 together?
A small comment here: the v1 ... 着...v2 is actually translated better as "is v2+ing while v1+ing. For example, "他坐着看电视" translates more naturally as "he's watching TV while sitting"
And "he's making a call while holding his phone"
Oh, that's better for English translation. Thanks for telling us this!
@EverydayChinese just a tiny piece of wisdom from an ex English teacher:)
@@EverydayChinese happy to help further if you ever need any assistance/suggestions
In the structure v1着v2, some people say that v1 is an "accompanying action", while v2 is the "main action". In 他坐着看电视, "sitting" is obviously an accompanying action, while "watching TV" is the main action. In Chinese, the accompanying action always comes first, followed by 着. And then the main action. In English, we usually put the main action first, as in "he's watching TV while sitting".
Do you give oral exams? Would love one! keep it up girl!
In this word, 我看着你吃饭,
Thats mean, im watching you eat something??
Yes!
The part about the 'posture' verbs is very interesting. For example:
经理在办公室里坐着呢 = "The manager is sitting in the office"
I think this can also be expressed without 着 as: 经理坐在办公室里
I don't know if there is any difference between the two.
With these 'posture' verbs, if 着 is not used, the 在-expression follows the verb.
I don't know if there is a good explanation for this.
For most verbs, the 在-expression precedes the verb. For example:
经理在办公室工作 = "The manager is working in the office"
Both "经理在办公室里坐着呢" and "经理坐在办公室里" mean "the manager is sitting in the office." In real life, “经理坐在办公室里” is always used before another action. For example:
Q:经理在哪儿? A:经理在办公室里坐着呢。/经理在办公室里。
Q:经理在干嘛呢?A:经理在办公室里坐着呢。/经理坐在办公室里喝茶呢。
Thanks for helping speed up my progress
