Les Paul Juniors really are awesome guitars and some what of an undiscovered gem by most players. Lots of tone in two controls and the P90 is such an expressive pickup.
What an awesome sound - GREAT demo... Nice to see a demo like this that is solely about the instrument - with a player who is not just goofing off a lot of flashy runs, but who plays with feeling/tone and also holds up with a super recording quality. I personally love this sound - the simple construction where the bridge and stop tail piece is combined into one - and one great single-coil pick-up. Is it so dynamic and with a lot of umph, but also detailed clarity.
Perhaps the best Junior demo I've seen. Exceptional playing and choice of sounds. I own a 1958 and I'm always blown away by what I can do with this guitar.
Killer demo's as always. Mike ..... You da man !!! Your love and appreciation for the guitars you demo really comes across in your playing, which is stellar by the way. Cheers !!!
Gibson Les Paul Junior....simplicity at its best, one tone knob, one volume knob, what more do you need...If it was good enough for Leslie West, it's good enough for me......going to my jam room to grab my 56 LP Jr.
You're a great player!!!! You're so lucky to play with the amazing vintage guitars!!!!! The informative info is so appreciated and acknowledged !!!!!!!!!
WOW!!!! Beautiful guitar....and that SOUND!!!! I"ve ALWAYS loved Les Paul Jr's and own an Epiphone '57 Re-Issue, but would love to get the REAL thing!!! Excellent playing Mike...really enjoyed it!!! Cheers
I have a 2013 Custom Shop 57 Junior re-issue and it is an absolute joy to play. The sustain and tone are simply amazing. I have long been a fan of P-90’s. I think a good many guys with Humbuckers spend a fortune seeking that elusive rock sound without realising it’s not the assortment of pedals or the high end amps they need … it’s just a Junior or at least a P90 that will rock out!
Thanks Mike. Sounds great. Just bought a USA and love it. Never thought I’d get so much enjoyment out of a one pick up guitar. These are truly awesome guitars. Hope this secret doesn’t get out before I save enough for a late 50s one.
Hi Mike, thank you very much for this excellent demo. These old Les Paul Jrs are great sounding guitars and you demonstrate it very well. All those different sounds from a one pickup guitar; Thanks for your tips ! I think i'm gonna try to get one of these...
Hi Mike from Simon in Melbourne. No matter how many new clips or demo videos are made new, I still get great enjoyment and inspiration from constantly revisiting your work. Especially this clip and your Yaron '59. I am always inspired by the way your playing always brings out the best elements of the guitar with the right amp. Your own playing is always creative, thoughtful and a great influence. Thanks for your fun, passion and may the journey continue. 👏👌👍🎸🙏🍾
Of course most all of you know about Leslie West playing Juniors. In an interview he said that back in the 70's he could find them all over the country in pawn shops. He'd buy them up for a song and ended up with dozens of them.
Love your playing ! I have the 2015 LP Junior 100th Anniversary edition and it's much more than a one trick pony. The single P-90 forces the player to learn how to use the Vol/Tone knobs in conjunction with his/her playing style in order to get the tones you're after. Great demo, keep up the good work!
Anyone that talks crap about a Les Paul Junior is strictly going by it's simplistic looks and has never ever played one. Once you play one, you'll be hooked.
And I love the looks of it. (I just bought me something that looks exactly like this one, though it's Epiphone and probably not so old. It will need some work done on it, but I already love it. Gonna make it fretless though.)
What a boss. I fell in love with these after watching footage of Gary Moore playing one with Thin Lizzy. I used to have the Epiphone version. One day I shall have an original! (If I can afford it!)
I own a 1968 LP GT w. P90 which is the attack of the 50 feet tone monster from guitar hell. This Junior you're demonstrating sounds similar IMO. Extremely nice tone clean and cranked up as well. Love your phrasing and timing too. I'm impressed. Thumbs up dude.
Wow that is a cool 56 axe,and yeah I was suprised on the different sound you can get from that,it also looked different with different angle from camera,,thanks for sharing :)
Amazing, you have the same right hand strumming technique as I do. I haven't seen many use it on electric. For rhythm work all I use is fingers. Nice demo of the Jr.
My recording technique is so simple that it hurts. LOL Truly, it is about keeping things simple and consists of the following principles: 1st. I use a high quality guitar cable (I swear on Monster Cables). 2nd. I go with the cable directly into the amp and set the amp master between 3 and 4 (so the amp is moving some air). 3rd. I use more or less always a Shure SM57 dynamic microphone and place it 5cm away from the amp-speaker with no angle (!!!) pointing it straight towards the cone approx. 10cm. away from the outer edge of the speaker. 4th. (and that IS special) I go with a high quality XLR-mic cable (again Monster) into a Focusrite 1 mic-preamp (very high quality and not cheap per channel) and adjust it rather hot (can go over 0db for saturation). 5th. I go from there into a Avid 16x16 digital I/O (high quality audio interface) and do NOT use the digital but one of the analog inputs which are calibrated by myself to minus 12db (yes, minus 12db) to keep the dynamic headroom in the following digital realm very high and the possible resulting coloration of the signal at a minimum. 6th. I do record (by knowing I will produce a video with standard 48KHz./16bit encoding) with 48KHz. sampling frequency and a bit-depth of 32float. Point 6 is VERY important, because any down- or up-sampling of a recorded signal will result in a hearable degredation of the recorded signal. Since many folks nowadays think 'bigger is better' they record with i.e. 96KHz. but only with a bit depth of 24bit not realizing that when they make the final bounce down to 48KHz. with 16bit (!!!) the resulting sound degradation will result in a harsh and metallic sound and reduced dynamics because of necessary anti-aliasing algorhythms. Too many people ruin their originally good sound in the digital realm, thinking that all digital is good, ignoring what their ears are telling them. So you have to keep it as simple as possible and let the digital algorhythms do as less as possible. Before doing my final bounce I add usually a very soft compression to my guitar track just to limit the highest peaks a bit (again VERY soft compression with a Threshold-Level of approx -5db and a ratio of 3:1, using 40ms attack, 90ms release time). I do NOT use any EQ, the sound must come from the guitar and amp, so I adjust there out of experience instead of using a plugin. Finally I bring the channel volume slider up to raise the signal level (I was recording with -12db!) by exactly +11db for ending up at a final level of -1db. That's it in the year 2016, however do change any of the above steps explained before only slightly will change the result drastically. :)))))
Luke Hannington You must thank way more the few generous folks who provide me their vintage guitars for doing videos like this and let me share the sounds and emotions with you! :) ;)
I had a Sunburst '57 Junior when I was a kid. Amazing guitar, but I drifted to the Strat which I felt challenged me more as a player. Listening to this now, brings me way back.
You really playing very well... you makes this guitar just amazing..check Jimmy Smith, the Foals’ guitarist he has a les Paul Junior and he said in an interview that this guitar is the best rythm machine so far...sorry for my bad English.
Les Paul Juniors really are awesome guitars and some what of an undiscovered gem by most players. Lots of tone in two controls and the P90 is such an expressive pickup.
I love this guy, he's so jolly it is infections! Great guitars, great attitude and great skills

Great work. Nice to hear tasteful playing.

I love no frills guitars that feel and sound great. The Les Paul Junior is one of those. Funny how it was never meant to reach this status.

Best damn guitar ever created … I own several (non-Gibson) guitars in the same style. One P90 and a volume knob is my preference.
Amazing, you have the same right hand strumming technique as I do. I haven't seen many use it on electric. For rhythm work all I use is fingers. Nice demo of the Jr.
