VHF TV ANTENNA TESTING

  • In this video i test VHF TV ANTENNA TESTING. This little VHF TV antenna to test and see how good it works. Watch this video and find out how. The antenna best suited for your location that truly receives both VHF and UHF signals is the HD antenna. notice the longer elements (rods) protruding from the HD antenna boom? There are cut to length to receive the VHF frequency wave pattern. The four shorter flat plates in front of the long rods is all that's needed for good UHF signal reception. That's why any antenna smaller than the size of the HD antenna will quickly begin to loose the ability to receive the VHF TV signals. This is also true of set top antennas. The reason rabbit ear antennas have the longer rods that stick up like rabbit ears is to receive the VHF TV signals.

Danny I had the same problem with VHF and UHF signals but
    there is an easier way.
    1. Buy RCA TVPRAMP1Z Preamplifier for outdoor antenna. You get UHF and VHF combiner to gather plus an FM trap for $22.86 at Amazon.
    2. Buy VHF and UHF antenna combiner Antenna Direct from Amazon $23.79 but you still have to buy a Preamplifier.
I have used several different splitters and none of them will give you the same results as the two I told you about.
I have built two of the Altemen Antennas and combined them together with great results. I also have a VHF antenna combine to gather. I live in southern Ohio in Lucasville I receive all the channels in West Virginia. Around me is hills and the TV Station are 70 to 80 miles away.
Thanks for the Videos I have learned a lot. Greg

I live in the north western Chicago suburbs, 30 miles from the transmitters, and there are channels broadcasting from Chicago on frequencies of 57 to 785 mHz. I am currently using from WalMart a $19.95 indoor 6" x 10" tri-fold antenna (basically flat) with one telescoping whip and a $14.95 amplifier, and get all of the stations except channel 2, the one at 57 mHz. There are times when some of the channels will pixelate. I am in a town home that faces S-SW by about 10 degrees and the transmitters are E-SE by about 20 degrees. I am also receiving channel 66 which is S-SW. I am considering building your smaller antenna but adding two 50" sections of 1/2" copper tubing which would not be behind the whiskers, would zig zag vertically and be attached to the same points as the transformer. The 50" was selected as the length as it is very close to the 1/4 wavelength of channel 2 which is the 57 mHz station which has a wavelength of 207.2 inches. Channel 5, the other VHF station broadcasting at 79 mHz, comes in clear. The remainder of the channels, 7 - 66 broadcast at from 177 - 785 mHz which equates to a wavelength of 67 - 15 inches. Since the minimal purchased equipment that I have works ok, I suspect that your small 8 element antenna will work much better and I am hoping that the addition of the copper tubing will pull in channel 2 without affecting the UHF channels. I have 8 ga copper wire for the 8 UHF elements and am using tubing for the VHF only because of the rigidity of the tubing. What are your thoughts on the copper tubing for the VHF?

Great tutorial Danny. Those of us who follow your posts love what you do (at least I do). Beautiful TAMA kit. Back in the day before drum machines and when music was actually played by real musicians, a set like that would set you back about 2,500.00 at least. Believe me I know. Learn your rudiments, and check out the You tube videos by some of the best drummers who have ever lived: Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Louis Bellson, Billy Cobham and Bill Bruford to name a few. I too would love to see you perform a drum solo here on UA-cam!

Hi Danny, I built the ultimate antenna a while back and the few VHF channels that we have works great with it, in fact, pegs the meter! Now one idea if you really need the VHF, is to put the wires across the middle where you hook up the transformer(on the ones you don't have the soldered transformer). Maybe there it won't take away from the UHF. You may want to test that. Thanks for all you do!

28.6 inches is actually exactly a 1/2 wavelength for 206 Mhz, aka VHF Channel 12. I'm adding the top and bottom hats [NARODS] to my Grey-Hoverman to pull in Ch 12.
Thank you Danny for your inspiration !

i love u videos danny! Big fan of them and plus ur funny as hell man. i love the stories u tell, always gets me laughing and its hard to make me laugh. i hope to see more videos of urs... i live up in rochester, minnesota and live two blocks from downtown and i cant get any channels with my regular bunny ears and expensive ones that i bought at walmart that u have to plug into the wall. i think its like that because i have a big ass two story brick building a cross the street that blocks all reception. and thats how i found ur videos cause i got fed up with missing my news i like to watch everyday and wanted to build a "bad to the bone antenna" ur the only one on youtube that seems like a pro with these antennas so i wanted to ask u if u think ur "bad to the bone antenna" would work for me in my situation with the brick building across the street and tv station antennas are only about 10 miles from my house. what do u think?

LIBYA LIBYANO LIBYA - Most Antennas on the Market can only reaches about 100 KM. Unless you can get those HUGE Antennas and remember, your obstructions to your TV Towers would be accountable as well.

Height is might when it comes to antennas.. uhf is line of sight so the higher your antenna is the better. If the station antenna is on a 3000 foot tower it will make the distance to your antenna laying on the ground.

Get an ARRL Antenna Handbook. Lots of it will not be for TV bands, but you will still read a lot about antenna theory. Probably can find an older one for under $10.

@ 11:06 - You can't " tie " them together. UHF(470-862MHZ) and VHF(47-230MHZ) *MUST* be separate and here is how... You need a *Balun* 75 to 300 Ohm UHF/VHF Matching Transformer - Balun. One Balun for VHF and One Balun for VHF - From there, you will tie that into a *Combiner/Mast Mount* - You will have ONE Output and that would go into your TV. *NOTE:* If you are running long distance Wire/Cable, anything over 25 Feet, then you need a Pre-Amplifier to boost your Signal.

So this antenna is for UHF only, ? , Channels 2-13. In one post you mentioned it
was " TIP TO TIP 28 AND 1 HALF " Is there a reason you used aluminium ? What is the size of the reflector ?

Hey I need to chime in here, those wall switches cannot work, they aren't intended for RF use. Too much inductance and capacitance to switch that high frequency/low current.
