Why I don’t think Golden is about Harry and his past self:

Ok. I can see and understand the interpretation that he is addressing his past self; enclosed by the image of being the “perfect girl magnet, white straight boy” image of a boy band member who just wishes to express who is he freely, break gender norms or sexuality etc. I see that and I get it.
BUT,
If he’s singing to his past self here:
“I’m hoping that someday he will open”
Doesn’t make sense to me. As it’s his now-self talking, he knows that he’s able to be open and every one loves him for it. So why is he still hoping?
And if it’s from the perspective of his past self talking to himself: “I know that you’re scared because I’m so open.” It doesn’t make sense either. If the song is about him being unable to be open, why would he be scared that he’s open... when he isn’t ?
Furthermore: “I know that you’re scared because I’m so open”. Why would his past self not only know about his future self being open, but be scared of being open because of it?
The question I then ask myself, from the line: “I’m hoping that someday he will open” is who in society is scared to be open? And why would being open mean “hearts get broken”?
I can only think it applies to an individual who is part of a minority group, such as LGBT for example. They would be scared of being open because they don’t want to ‘disappoint’ people they love. Harry is very open about himself and his self-expression. Someone who is still afraid of expressing them self freely would indeed be scared of being like Harry, in fear of what people may think.
That’s what I draw from this. Do with it what you will.
Also, just as a side note. I am LGBT and identify with this read of the lyrics :)

I definitely hear you. I think a lot of people hearing he is as a result of you having he in the text and our brains tend to synchronize what we hear with what we see. I can make my self hear he when I'm reading the lyrics but not when I look away from the screen.

This is definitely about his past self I’ve written love notes to myself in the past tense far as growing from where I used to be. This example through song ISNT far fetch nor unrealistic. As an Aquarius just like Harry we do these things a lot whether it’s explicitly or not we’re empaths and know what we’re trying to say through our words more than anything else the rest is up for interpretation but in all honesty this example of him speaking to his younger insecure self is so pure and vulnerable and I really do applaud and look up to his growth so much. He’s help me a lot 🤍
