- This is the full length trip report with natural sounds and on-trail commentary from a 4-day backpacking adventure that Brent (Devan) and I took to the Lost Creek Wilderness in June 2020. We covered ~40 miles on the Big Loop in Colorado's Pike National Forest. Notable sights included the Shaft House, Lost Creek, Indian Creek meadows, Bison Peak, Lake Park and many more.
We worked our way counterclockwise from the Goose Creek Trailhead and completed the Big Loop with additional side trips to the Shaft House and Bison Peak. This was my first time camping above 9000' as well as the highest point I've ever reached on foot, 12432' on Bison Peak.

My first backpacking trip in CO! Where I should visit next time in the Centennial State?
The Sangre De Cristo range. Great video Layne. Looks like you had a great time.
It was a great trip! Thanks for the tip Evan, will look into the Sangre De Cristo range. It’ll probably be 2021 at the earliest before I hike again in CO but I’m always dreaming
This was my first back packing trip there in lost creek in June 2019. My daughter initiated planning and preparations. We had took the counterclockwise trailhead. I had an overloaded pack to make 11 miles per day a goal. So we took the middle trail up the big boulders, barely negotiable as well on the third morning. It felt like we already hiked the 30 miles at this juncture, but dad here insisted on bringing so much food . So late afternoon on thee third day we managed to get back to base, or as in parking area. I still had food for at least a week longer for the both of us. Next time I go to lost creek I'll be better prepared . Even so, it is he most beautiful scenery and best experience thus so far being out on the trail. As for my Daughter, she'll be out there again this July 3rd 2021, making the 30 mile loop without her pops. Meanwhile I'll be sitting on the living room couch waiting for her reports, drinking appropriately Coors brews, Colorado kool-aid In celebratory fashion, that is , about her out on the Lost Creek Wilderness trail. So bottoms up to everyone that will be out there, and Happy trails to Mish and Kyle, Dad.
@@davidlipke6530 Thanks for sharing this story David! Lost Creek is a special place and it sounds like you had a memorable time with your daughter there on the trail
So nice to have natural background sounds. I can't count the number of backpacking videos where I have to watch without sound because they've laid some awful dank music track over it.
Love that Colorado pink granite.
Glad you enjoyed it Brian! I prefer natural sounds on backpacking videos as well. Some guys sprinkle in a tasteful amount of music but most overdo it and ruin the vibe. Thanks for watching!
I am taking my first solo hike here next month and so appreciate the video. Thanks so much for breaking it down on the map with mileage and elevation. I can't express how helpful that is. I'm very grateful to have come across this video :)
Good luck on your first solo hike Libby. It should be a beautiful time of year for you. Be prepared for some bugs then. Glad my video helped out!
Great video! Excellent footage. Great commentary--just enough to inform. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words Christopher! Glad you enjoyed and found it informative
I'm moving to Colorado soon and looking to maybe try this area out. Thank you so much for showing the map and your adventure!
Enjoy your time out in Colorado Mariah! A beautiful place to live & explore
Awesome video! New subscriber. We are hiking this spring 2024. We live in the area and are avid hikers! Very informative video! Thanks for sharing! 🥾🥾🏕️
Thanks Whiskers glad to have you! Enjoy your hike coming up this spring, Lost Creek is an awesome wilderness to explore
Great review of the hike, thank you!
Thank you Ashley!
Thank you for the report, it's a great way to return to lost creek when you can't physically be there, Shout out to Mish and Kyle on their Trailhead beginning on July 3rd, 2021.
Happy Trails Mish & Kyle!
Thanks for bringing us along. Looking forward to seeing your friend's pack evolution in future videos (based on the reddit thread). Learned a lot about the Lost Creek Wilderness from your video and appreciate the time and energy it took to go out there and then put this video together. Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks X! One of my favorite parts of making these videos is all I get to learn about the areas - glad you were able to learn something from it as well. More to come, stay tuned
Thanks for the coverage! The landscape was amazing.
Incredible landscape out there! I am glad to have had the opportunity to explore a little of Colorado on this trip.
Really cool video you guys! That place is such an awesome area to explore :)
Very nice audio, which makes such a big difference.
Thanks for the kind words Wonderer! It really was an awesome area, we had a great time out there. There are still more areas in the Wilderness we didn't get to - always something for another day.
Nice video. I especially like that you show the route on a map. Most video I have to play detective to figure out the route. Is that the x-mid tent by Dan Durston? If so, how is it?
A good overnight hike is the Phantom Terrace. It is a little sketchy for a 10' section, but is a fun hike. Holy Cross, Indian Peak, and Flat Tops Wildernesses are all good. I try to avoid the areas in the state that have huge sections of dead trees from beetle kill.
Thanks SK, I appreciate you sharing that you liked seeing the route mapped out. Good eye - that is the X-Mid 1P by Dan. For me it is the perfect tent. Double walled, easy to setup, lightweight and doesn't break the bank.
I will look into those options, thank you. Not sure when my next visit to CO will be but hopefully sooner rather than later.
Great video guys. Appreciate the natural sounds, just the right amount of commentary and the daily route description with the map. We're planning a trip in this area in mid September. What do you think the water options will be? Did you have sufficient places to refill on water? Keep up the good work.
Thanks Ocala, good luck on your trip! To be honest I can’t even advise on the water situation in September as I haven’t been there that time of year. We had sufficient places for water in June. If you’re on Reddit there is a LostCreekWildernessCO group that has some experts on the area
Awesome video. I am meeting up with a friend in CO Springs for Labor Day, and we are going to set up for some day hikes around here. Did it look like there would be good fishing in Wigwam Park?
I second the Sangres, but another crowd-free area in CO is the South San Juan Wilderness. The whole area around Conejos Peak is absolutely beautiful. Or, if you want some recommendations for nearby NM, I could give you some :). Much fewer people. I love CO, but it can be hard to feel like you're actually getting out in some of the more popular areas.
I would say so. We saw a pair of fellas fishing Lost Creek getting close to the Lost Park parking who said they were having luck. Also passed a group of guys carrying rods in towards the Goose Creek side of Wigwam.
That’s for the recommendation on South San Juan! I’d love to visit NM, I haven’t spent any time backpacking in the SW at all.
Thanks for sharing! I'm planning my trip for this July. Did you use a bear canister or hanging bag?
My buddy hung and I used an ursack. Good luck on your trip! It’s a beautiful area
Super vid, thank you! Dumb question: I've only done the wilderness sites that you have to reserve and hike to. How do you know where these camp sites are ahead of time or do you just search? Is there an app or site that lists them?
It’s a good question Rodney, I researched online by searching around and found a handful of potential spots that we then tailored our walking days to hit
@@LayneComfort perfect thanks! Seeing some mentioned in AllTrails also.
Awesome video! Trip looked amazing! Did you guys have to get permits for campsites?
Thanks William. The Lost Creek Wilderness was very beautiful. When we did this trip in 2020 there were no permits needed to camp there
I'm planning a trip this July and am really considering this loop. Thanks again for sharing your great adventures.
Thanks for watching. Good luck on your trip!
Layne - why did you choose a tent for this trip, and not your hammock set up?
Great question Barragin! The main reason was that we had originally planned to camp in the Lake Park area on night 3 and I wasn't sure what hang options would be available at that altitude (10k'+).
@@LayneComfort After doing the loop, would a hammock have been doable?
Yes, definitely. There were hammocking options at all 3 of the sites we stayed at.
