HDMI 2.1 doesn't mean anything at this point. The spec is 48Gbps, yet the new Xbox is 40Gbps and when the new PS came out it was 33Gbps. The Xbox managed to do all the 2.1 features with 40Gbps.. the new PS was supposed to get an update to do 40Gbps because 33 wasn't enough to do VRR. It was supposed to be updated to unlock 40Gbps but I don't believe it ever did. I don't know if there are currently any 2.1 devices that do 48Gbps. 40 seems to be the norm now and honestly I don't know what the extra 8Gbps would really get you if everything can be done with 40Gbps. VRR was part of the 2.1 spec yet the new PS couldn't do VRR when it was released due to lack of bandwidth yet it's marked 2.1. Buying anything 2.1 right now is buyer beware.
Bang-a-rang, thank you so much for this update. Literally about to pull the trigger on a new monitor (48" LG C1) and while I thought I was okay, I just checked again based on this update. You rock!!!
This makes the spec pointless, if you can't look quickly at the HDMI version and know what it does then the HDMI spec is now pointless, companies may as well just not pay for the sticker now.
Nowadays more and more specs on the box are just that, specs on the box and nothing more. Sad. Thank you Nada for this video and for the link you posted. I appreciate it.
So going forward every HDMI 2.0 device will be HDMI 2.1 but it doesn't necessarily mean anything unless they specifically list what features they support? But they don't have to list what isn't supported? Great, I needed life to be more confusing.
Thank you for bring this topic to more light with your follower. It’s unjust to label a product that doesn’t support the features. We have to be more informed when shopping. We can’t relay on their “specialists” at the store to let us know what is compatible.
Don't know if this is a similar thing but I remember when 1080p HD come out, and the word was at the time was you needed a special ultra fast HDMI lead that cost up to £20-70 then people realised that a £5 HDMI lead Will perform as well as a £20,🤷🏻♀️, I'd prefer it if the manufacturer evolved the optical port and delivering 5.1 7.1 DTS,Atmos..... I prefer a thin optical lead v HDMI lead, I'd rather keep a spare HDMI for firestick, chrome, android box console etc, Bluetooth is just rubbish, lip sync issues going from channel to channel, Sound via WiFi slightly better but limited with the delivery again
Thanks for taking the time to spread the word on this problem It's great to see youtubers showing care for the viewers. HDMi has royalties attached to it and displayport and usb 4.0 displayport don't so it will be harder for people to compare the HDMI to DIsplay port, this in its self can affect a buyers monitor and tv choice so an investigation should be carried into the groups that have made the decision and the brands that are palying along with the approach and their real intensions. Hdmi cables are still abit cheaper to make so this may be a money grab approach by the companies while they still can and the HDMI group will still get their royalties beacause people will buy Hdmi bacuse of the confusion.
Their logic makes no sense! Anyone can make a 100 examples of how this is a fraud. Like: This car has a V12 engine. But supports only 6 cylinders. BTW nice wallpaper. Where can we get it?
Consumers: If only there was a version number that let us know the bandwidth and features supported. HDMI Licensing Administrator: You think you do, but you don't.
At first a was annoyed that the HDMI consortium would do this, but after thinking about it for a while, it kind of makes sense. Basically, HDMI 2.1 is only the interface. It's the current standard with a theoretical transfer bandwidth of 48Gb/s to utilize additional features like 4K at 120Hz, VRR, etc... it would be up to the individual display manufacturer to actually list the specs it has, regardless if it was using HDMI2.1 ports or not. When I was shopping for a new TV, I wasn't just looking for a TV that had HDMI2,1 ports and automatically assuming it would have 4K@120Hz with variable refresh rate. Instead I was actually reading the exact listed specifications and making an informed purchase.

My experience with HDMI 2.1 is it enables you to use 8.K monitors and TVs to see things you cannot see using 4.K. Thanks for your wonderful video! Kind regards from Ásgeir in Iceland.
Thank you! Very helpful explanation of the mess that is the current HDMI “standard”. This is no different than the diminished path taken by other standards in the past such as THX and IMAX.
Hdmi 2.1 is less important on monitors since they have displayport anyway. Hdmi 2.1 is more problematic with tvs that have the new mediatech chipset. LG and Samsung have made their own hdmi 2.1 chipsets so its no problem with the feature set there. U get a slightly less 40gb/s with those chips but there is no real reason to go beyond that nowdays on 10 bit displays anyway.
Seems like most monitor companies didn't know either, or they'd have been marketing trash HDMI 2.1 connections for much longer. I think HDMI LE just figured this suits themselves best.
You have to remember, HDMI the group is ran by the same exact companies that often times make displays, they are incentivized to make all hdmi 2.0 products hdmi 2.1 to help boost sales as a whole on less desired displays which don't have the things which people want from hdmi 2.1 like 4k 120hz or earc and if they can muddy those waters more than all the better. This is going to be grounds for eventual class action lawsuits and if it gets really bad, probably governmental regulations. Till then, just have to look up the specs of the display really carefully to make sure you're actually getting what you're looking for.

As I frequently switch locations and connect up to 4 monitors to both my PC and my laptop, and even carry desktop computers from one city to another, I am tired of both monitors and video cards supporting a history of connectors: VGA, DVI, HDMI, DP, USB-C. I just wish they could settle on one standard like the USB-C. And to make cables even more of a problem, both HDMI and DP sometimes come with mini-HDMI and mini-DP ports for the laptops ... Maybe video card manufacturers could make cards with just 4 USB-C ports, but provide some adapters in the box to DP, HDMI, DVI, VGA....

So glad I'm subbed to this channel. Thank you for talking about this!
My HDMI 2.0 port identifies as a HDMI 2.1 port.
Bang-a-rang, thank you so much for this update. Literally about to pull the trigger on a new monitor (48" LG C1) and while I thought I was okay, I just checked again based on this update. You rock!!!
What does this have to do with the C1?
@@tarnishedd My guess would be that the C1 is labeled as “HDMI 2.1”?
@@StolenJoker84 you are correct, good guess!
Yeah I have a CX and its great, the only issue is with the HDMI 2.1 cables as HDMI 2.1 specifications are meaningless.
LG C1/CX is a true genuine hdmi 2.1 tho its able to do 4k 120hz with VRR and Gsync capable.
This makes the spec pointless, if you can't look quickly at the HDMI version and know what it does then the HDMI spec is now pointless, companies may as well just not pay for the sticker now.
I guess they'll still need to license it to use the port at all? Not 100% sure though.
Nowadays more and more specs on the box are just that, specs on the box and nothing more. Sad. Thank you Nada for this video and for the link you posted. I appreciate it.
Congratulations on 200k!
Thank you so much! 😀 Will think of a way to celebrate it properly in the next few days!
I do read TFT Central, but not often enough to have seen this. Thanks for shining a light on this industry stupidity.
So they basically pull an usb with that change.
So going forward every HDMI 2.0 device will be HDMI 2.1 but it doesn't necessarily mean anything unless they specifically list what features they support? But they don't have to list what isn't supported? Great, I needed life to be more confusing.
My solution: if its not on the box, it stays on the shelf. And for crissake don't trust the sales people.
Wow 200K subs! Congrats Techtesters!
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Well done!
Thanks! :D
Their logic makes no sense!
Anyone can make a 100 examples of how this is a fraud.
Like: This car has a V12 engine. But supports only 6 cylinders.
BTW nice wallpaper. Where can we get it?
Always appreciate you reviews Nada.It does not get more honest than your reviews. You always give customers a good heads up!
Read an article on Reddit, thought it was really important (and a bit outrageous, IMHO). It's good that you brought this up.
Consumers: If only there was a version number that let us know the bandwidth and features supported.
HDMI Licensing Administrator: You think you do, but you don't.
I agree with your standpoint completely, what a stupid decision. It’s like saying usb 2 and 3 are the same, idiotic.
Techtesters i honestly will have to keep my eyes open now for my monitor upgrade thank you so much for the info.
Absolutely bizarre situation.📺! Groeten en ga door met deze videos! Erg fijn.
Modern Business 'The art of Selling something completely different to what's advertised and circumventing any legal comeback' misrepresentation is more and more common
I had no idea that this was happening, Thank you so much for keeping us informed. Happily subbed and looking forward to your next content. Merry Christmas.
2.1 marketing & honesty was hurting sales of monitors with fewer features! Got to read ALL THE FINE PRINT NOW!
Im glad you said "in my opinion" after saying its wrong as its still objective regardless of how much it does or does not make sense. Subbed as soon as i heard that, its good to know what is objective and how its only ourselves that think things and not the voice for all. Silly little things like that make me like or question people. Its also the type of thing id add myself and i see not many do this and talk like they are emperors of thought for everyone
Just wanted to say that this channel is finding its voice through the second half of the year and is bringing relevant content while acknowledging other creators when they mention things out of their wheelhouse. Glad I subbed
Well that's crazy. But a nice reason to watch more informative Techtesters vids in the future!
HDMI licensing administrator...how can they suck at their job so much?
Thank you very much for the heads up.
They don't suck Jeeves. They know exactly what they're doing. "Pulling the wool over your eyes."
LOL !! TCL, Hisense and Vizio do this with their TV's. They put HDMI 2.1 on the box but the TV panels are 60hz, no VRR, no ALLM.
Congrats on 200K!
Great! I didn't know how to use my spare time, now I can delve into complicated specs of monitors and TVs all day long! Yippie!
It's important to always dig around and do a lot of research. With refresh rates for instance, different websites can have different claims about the same product.
Find the one you trust. Just beware of those with sponsors. You can't objectively rate a product that sponsors your channel. No matter what anyone tells you.
"..so that no-one will be misled"
Lady, you will never find a job in marketing
My experience with HDMI 2.1 is it enables you to use 8.K monitors and TVs to see things you cannot see using 4.K. Thanks for your wonderful video! Kind regards from Ásgeir in Iceland.
Scary. You'll have to really read the fine print on products now to ensure you're getting what you need.
How is this less confusing? this is crazy. Do you think the monitor companies have been lobbying them as they struggling to sell old units?
Seems like most monitor companies didn't know either, or they'd have been marketing trash HDMI 2.1 connections for much longer. I think HDMI LE just figured this suits themselves best.
Thank you for making me aware of this. This is very damning.
Sounds a lot like the current USB standards model.
Yeah.
Thank you for the information and rant. All this does is confuse the consumer when buying anything that has HDMI 2.1
You mean confuse them more. It was never clear. Well, maybe the very first digital from analogue. But only because they couldn't fake that.
As if finding a tv/monitor wasn't challenging enough, now I have to question if they're telling me the truth SMH 🤦
Wow, I guess I'll need to do more reading and research before my next monitor purchase... Happy Holidays team 🎄
Companies muddying tech specs is a worrying direction for the tech industry.
Greed ... they know that most people will NOT send back a 'wrong' purchase but rather give it away to family & friends - hence more units sold as a result
I knew on your accent that you were from Eastern Europe but didnt know your were from Serbia. Thats cool! My dad is from Raška and Im born here in Sweden. Love to go there and meet my relatives!
That’s great news. My new “HDMI 2.1” TV and AVR receiver can wait then. Thanks
I confused, so I want to buy the Xbox series s to play on 120 fps but do I need a monitor that has to have a 2.1 hdmi because the Xbox series s comes with a 2.1 hdmi?
Mrs Techtesters, can you explain me if the difference between the cable HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 is the hardware of the cables, the way they are built, or its only software, a upgrade drive ???
Please explaine me.
Nada, I like your face. A very friendly face for tech reviews is a nice welcome.
First USB and now this. What the hell is going on with the industry...
What the hek??? This change makes no sense at all. Thanks for let us know
This is like the USB 3.X BS!!! What the hell!?
Love your videos. Have you heard any info on the upcoming (Feb.22) on the new Acer 32S I believe it’s called? It’s a 32” 4K HDR mini led hdmi 2.1 monitor coming next year. Supposedly it will have 512 zones and be able to hit 1200nits. I love your reviews. Would love to see you review this one.
So in essence what HDMI 2.1 was disappeared, the specs it represented did not get renamed to HDMI 3.0 or something like that?
Labels and fables. The system has been misleading consumers for a long time. Knowledge is king. Thanks.
oled is the future, reason why im waiting on the 2.1 hdmi oled monitors to hit the market
Yeah, that explains the Samsung Neo G9 with limited bandwidth (32Gbps). Fake 2.1.
One more reason why I just use a DisplayPort cable 🤔.
DisplayPort master race
Lets try another certification, something like REAL HDMI 2.1. This is insane, like a killer of reputation.
I think you forgot to include the link to TFT in the description
Sharp. Adding it ASAP. Its late and my brain is already asleep.
I went from a "high end" gaming monitor that died right after the warranty expired, to using a 10-year-old TV and haven't looked back.
What a mess! Welp I'm glad that I subbed to this channel.
There should be class action lawsuit against HDMI Licensing Administrator for fraud.
Great information as I’m looking to buy a HDMI 2.1 monitor mainly for my PS5. Just confused on what to go with. I do want to use it with my PC also.
I'm so mad about this. I'm glad that more and more reporters are starting to cover this kind of gas lighting that standards boards are basically coming up with. I have to know 20 different things in order to figure out what kind of USB ports I'm getting on a device and 20 other different things in order to know whether the HDMI works or not. This is bull
