This video explains the new changes in the HDMI naming system and the features of products that carry the HDMI 2.1 label. I explains that, contrary to popular belief, the label does not indicate the capabilities of the device and that the device manufacturers have no say in the naming. So in order to know a devices capabilities, you need to know all the possible features and look for them in the device specs. These features include: Dynamic HDR, Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Quick Media Switching (QMS), Quick Frame Transport (QFT), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). Then I explain the supposed reasoning for why the went with the dumb naming system.

If you're curious why they did this, because TV and device manufacturers paid them to do it. Remember that the HDMI Consortium, the company that controls the HDMI standard and Licensing, is run by all of the TV and device manufacturers. Recently, those manufacturers took over, and made it so that everything will have the same number attached to it so that consumers are more confused. It is a vastly anti-consumer move, and is 100% done to be confusing, so somebody might get an old device that doesn't support 4K 120 hertz, but it's still HDMI 2.1 in the marketing materials. This was solely done for marketing material. That's it.

It makes it difficult to find the proper cable for your needs at times as some have bs marketing and aren't the advertised speeds.

A more widely used feature of eARC is configuring the TV for example to turn off HDMI connected components when the TV is turned off and vice versa. Also switching inputs when devices are turned on or disks are inserted and other of those sorts of features are supported. The latest gaming consoles support some of these features if you look in their settings.

    • @weberman173
      @weberman173 7 місяців тому

7 months late but thats not a feature or eARC or ARC.
its HDMI CEC(Consumer Electronics Control) that enables turning on devices when your TV is turned on or vice versa.
eARC and ARC are audio return channels, eARC just being an "extension" of ARC in that it has a higher bandwith and supports 3d Audio(like dolby atmos and similiar) they do have the ability to adjust the volume of components "downstream"(so using the TV removes volume button changes the soundbars volume level instead of the TVs)

ugh, this reminded me of usb back when i was trying to figure out what version to look for in a product description and it turned out it depended if a seller wanted to use a new or old version of the versions...so..bleah
anyway this seems more advertiser-friendly and not consumer-friendly...though for international sellers is it really so bad to lie anyway? couldn't they just call it free speech if they had to call it anything at all, which they don't. 🙂

Joe, I was truly $*$% lucky I got the fabled Sony inZone M9 gaming monitor for a third off the MSRP on an ebay open box deal, as I was shopping for cables for the thing as I literally WAS NOT HDMI 2.1 ready before this rigamarole was brought to our public attention via this video.
I was sadly afraid the misinformation spread to cables as I mainly shopped Amazon, where noname labels were dominating the selection thereof! Where's the actual brand name cables these days? Anyways I was lucky the hardware I DID buy (3-port switcher, extra cable for the PC) actually works competently enough for my monitor...

HDMI is just a connector. I would never use a connector spec to determine capabilities of the device anyway. It's like saying a PC has USB-A connectors. That tells me nothing about it's CPU or GPU or RAM.
Similarly just because a device has USB 3 capability does not mean it will necessarily be able to completely saturate the bandwidth. You have to look at the device specs.
While it's definitely concerning there is no clear spec for consumers to determine their TV capabilities easily,, bundling it together with the HDMI spec was always going to cause problems at some point.

100% agree. I'm OK with "HDMI 2.1 Good" or something to say it is the full HDMI 2.1 - all bandwidth, all features and "HDMI 2.1 CRAP" edition if it is only a fraction of the bandwidth or missing features. They'll get away with it by making cabled HDMI 2.1 "compatible"

About controlling devices through hdmi. You know how on a laptop monitor you can change the brightness in windows, but on a desktop monitor you change it in the OSD? Yeah you are supposed to be able to do this on a desktop monitor or a tv too. Potentially the monitor OEM could just make a desktop app that had all the functions from the OSD or even changes display profiles based on time or what you are doing.

I have home internet that is based off of phone signal. The ISP says I can have download speeds up to 100. The first 10 minutes or so after power cycling my 2 in 1 modem/router my speeds are in the high 20's to low 30's. Then they range from 8-22 any other time. I have great signal strength at least 4 bars sometimes 5. My ISP can't figure out why they keep dropping. Any ideas?

    *I have a TCL C735*
    It's got all features 100%
But that black screen you were talking bout
that happens as the Tv changes
    resolution and settings in inputs
    especially in gaming..That's fine..but
    sometimes this happens during mid-game
    With all features turned on?
And sometimes those features automatically change on their own
So i need to keep checking from time to time
To see if they are still on? Annoying..
    that pisses me off??
Don't know why and not sure if it's the Tv
Or the game content but regardless
    it shouldn't happen
I know the Higher End Tvs like Samsung
And Sony don't have that issue...
But for the most part it works ok
But when your playing and you're in a battle
Or fight scene and it cuts off like that
For at least a couple seconds
Makes me wanna take a baseball bat to it
The sound is still going but not screen

CEC is more useful this way: I had a TV, a DVD player and a Home Theater all separated, that means 3 remotes, with CEC, I could use the Home Theater remote to control my dvd player and TV, because that was the most complete remote in the house, times changed and I haven't used CEC in some time, so maybe with smart TVs you can control other devices via smart menu or something (does anyone know?)
