    I remember this going to Downtown in LA to see the Tbirds they were great. Greatest Sport around. Every time I got the chance to watch it on tv or luckily enough to go see them live I would. Those were actually good old days. It would of been something big if would of continued. Terrific childhood memories!!!!!

    OMG! How much I loved this sport as a kid. I judiciously watched the matches each week on a local television station. Each telecast lasted one hour, and was heavily edited for time. But Joan Weston was one of my idols. She was a legend in a time when many women were not even recognized for their physical acumen. Joanie was actually the most popular female athlete for a few years in the 70s … even greater than Billie Jean King. Joanie carried the sport of her shoulders for quite a while. Unfortunately, the decision was made to dissolve Roller Derby in 1973 (premature in my opinion). It never was able to recapture its tremendous popularity thereafter. During it's heyday, more than 50,000 fans watch a Roller Derby-Roller Games match from the Chicago White Sox stadium, over 35,000 at Shea Stadium in NY (Where the Mets used to play), and they always sold out Madison Square Garden (20,000). Derby was the biggest, most thrilling thing of its time, but fell victim to the gasoline shortage and other financial restraints, and folded. It then was turned into Roller GAMES, and became too theatrical. The Games made the Derby players second rate, and Derby skaters were dominated by Games skaters. Joanie being dominated by a second or third string GAMES player was more than we could stand, and, as a result, the sport died on the East Coast, never to ever regain its popularity. The problem was that the sport relied too much on their legends, and did foster bringing forth younger players to replace them, so you had players in their 40s and 50s still skating and dominating the sport, when they should have nurtured other skaters to replace them. That was their BIGGEST mistake.

      There was more involved then just the issue with gasoline. However point moot. Last chance it really had to return was during the '99-2000 era when Roller Jam was created. There was talent. There was a large television contract. Sadly there was yes the same formula that yes Roller Games & Bill Griffiths brought to it that practically spelled it's final nail in the coffin! Sad mainstream media too even finally gave it decent write ups. Just didn't live up to it's capacitiy or what many had hoped be Roller Derby's revival.

      Greaat insight into the sport. The only thing I'll disagree with is that the Derby skaters weren't dominated by the Games skaters at all. Everyone played and skated equally. The Derby skaters left because they were miserable skating the fake Games junk. Within one season almost every one of them was gone. Margie Lazlo held out the longest but she eventually left too.

      Isn't that too bad. Letting a divorce contribute to the demise of something this great that left all those hard working skaters that devoted their lives to it out of work. Too bad.

      Bill Griffiths wanted to expand the Roller Games teams and wanted a out of control team so he made Reilly the coach and took Tonette off if the N.Y. Bombers to be the Captain much like he did to created The Brooklyn Devils with Diane Severson and Wild Bill Erghot. Sadely at this time we lost The Australian Kangaroos with Gooch Gueterri. I don’t care for flat track Roller Derby, it’s a joke. Although I do understand the cost and labor of banked track. I just don’t care for flat track.

    • @georgegong6813
      @georgegong6813 5 років тому +1

      A banked track brings a completely different dimension to the sport of Roller Derby. Today's game is very different. As Jerry Seltzer defined it best "More so a rugby scrimmage!". It's much slower & difficult to pick out individual players by yes their whacky uniforms. Yes Roller Derby today is legitimate to back then when it was well fixed. Though Roller Derby had @ least more realism then Games! Either or I think this old format can still work & better if made a legitimate game. Yes & keep to the old rules. Keep it simple. Not like today. Just enforce the rules that already on the books!

    • @johnjohnson3709

      George Gong I agree, but today’s Roller Derby is a show. I much admire the skating skills of the skaters back then.

      I actually got a chance too to see a current flack track game demoed @ the Cal Expo years ago. Free part of admission involving the "Sac Girls" Agree did nothing for me either. If this was done legit & with a banked track honestly I believe it could come back. Sadly yes too would require someone with deep pockets & patient enough to allow a new fan base. A lot of us OG's are dying out sadly. Many of the Skaters seen here too sadly long passed.

    I realize that Chet Coppock is very young in this broadcast, but he comes off as an overblown cliche factory...

    • @georgegong6813
      @georgegong6813 5 років тому +2

      Chet had a different style appeared more so for Games if you will! Still a different style of broadcasting no one can beat the late Walt Harris!

    • @donniehagy5125
      @donniehagy5125 3 роки тому +3

      @@georgegong6813 What bothered me most about Coppock was he NEVER pronounced skaters' names correctly. In this game, for instance, he butchered Mike and Ken "Ah-DA-me" names. This wasn't the only name he constantly mispronounced. As an announcer of any kind, you should do a little homework and prepare for your call of the game. And that "bango" shit used to make me gag.

    • @georgegong6813
      @georgegong6813 3 роки тому +1

      @@donniehagy5125 Chet was indeed different I thought more appealing perhaps to those in the Midwest. Good to read later his broadcasting career didn't end where his Roller Derby one ended. His style did take awhile to get used to. I prefer it over Roller Games announcers like Dick Lane, Elmer Anderson, or especially Ed Darian though for sure. Anderson perhaps should had stuck to simply color commenting maybe. I never heard Coppick cover the Milwaukee Bucks. I understand though where you're coming from on the names of Skaters though. Also too much of a comedian too wasn't as natural with jokes or when it was totally appropriate to sneak a quick joke once in awhile like Walt Harris did.

    • @donniehagy5125
      @donniehagy5125 3 роки тому +2

      @@georgegong6813 Agreed George. I thought Dick Lane was a hoot because, well, he covered a "hoot" of a game. I never took "Games" seriously because what the skaters skated wouldn't allow it. Walt Harris was the epitome of a professional announcer. I loved to hear him do his broadcast. It is a shame that most of the Roller Derby games were either taped over or thrown away. ESPN now has the nerve to recast "Roller Jam," which is one of the reasons the Derby heard the death knell.

    • @georgegong6813
      @georgegong6813 3 роки тому

      @@donniehagy5125 Wow really? Never knew ESPN would broadcast Roller Jam guess they had to purchase the old tapes from TNN I forgot what that station is called now. Don't know what be worse to view either...Games or Jam! LOL! Either or yes Walt Harris always treated Roller Derby or anything he broadcasted or narrated if you will with professionalism 1st. No one even Ken Nydell IMHO stood a candle to Walt Harris's style & though Nydell did so also professionally, sorry didn't agree with his overall critique of Harris. Yes I do agree Jam too didn't help bring legitimate Derby back nor helped it either. Then all water under the...track now anyhow! Sadly doubt if any game like we knew if would ever come back. If so it would have to be done very differently not even the way Jerry Seltzer did it sadly. Today it's a completely different world now too!

If it wasnt for some respectful navy officers I could have been kidnapped or raped. only part I thought was funny was when their was a dwarf or midget guy would upset some of the one team and that made me laugh. would later have stayed home and watched the tv.
