- Poor sound, but this is, in my opinion, the most vocally satisfying performance of this duet. If only Decca had recruited Kraus to sing with Sutherland in her studio recordings!

WOW!!! Kraus is amazing here!!! Lyric Tenor power!!!!!!! I saw him live at the Lyric in Chicago and he had a way of taking his light tenor sound and filling that big house like surround sound!!!! He wasn't really heavy enough to be a spinto, but, man could he open his voice up to fill the house!! Thrilling, just thrilling!!!
Wow,what a duet! I heard Pavarotti with Joan Sutherland in Lucia,they're also very good. I have to admit,this duet is total perfection. I read in the description: '' If only Decca had recruited Kraus to sing with Sutherland in her studio recordings!'' I agree but i'ts better to hear Kraus live,opera is all about live perfomances without microphones and special effects,and Kraus was an authentic opera singer. R.I.P maestro.

I saw Sutherland and Kraus together in the theater only once: Lucia in 1982. Even so many years after this recording, they were both extraordinary.
WOW...I'm speechless. He faces up to La Stupenda and you can actually hear him very well on the D6 or the C6. Bravissimi to both!!!
My god Kraus had some chops!! He actually stood up to Sutherland and cut through, because she was notorious for anihilating tenors esp in the higher passages, but Kraus was saying "not today!!" lol

Dacaomero: You are wrong; there is not exist only Kraus and Sutherlad, because so many tenors and soprano have achieved this vocal level. You need to hear Pons, Deutekom, Peters and many other coloratura sopranos, and Gedda, Filippeschi, Martini and many high voice tenors to conclude that thera are not the greatest, but the greates only if are listening some of them. Está es la referencia absoluta de como hacer este dúo y tb I Puritani. Quien pone en juicio esto es por dos razones no sabe de ópera o es un necio. Es cierto que hay otras referencias pero no de este nivel. Kraus era un tenor temido por las sopranos porque sus agudos lo invaden todo, por qué luego de la actuación en lisboa Portugal Callas no volvió a cantar con Kraus? Kraus es inconmensurable inalcanzable pero La Stupenda estuvo a la altura. Increíble esto es historia,ahora ya ni voy a la ópera, para qué a ver un musical mal hecho, no amigos me quedo escuchando esto .

La famosa lista de los 20 tenores mejores de la historia fué orquestada por el mafioso bajobaritenor. El jurado era poco experto y uno de ellos era el director artístico de un teatro de tercera amigo del mafioso. Puro marketing. Esa lista es un disparate y un engaño. Kraus está entre los 5 tenores mejores de todos los tiempos. Como lírico ligero era incomparable.

You are so right about Decca - Kraus would have been a very satisfactory partner for Sutherland in her early recordings, especially in "I puritani".

They are both incredible. I've never been a Kraus lover but his earlier years were amazing. Sutherland in her prime is truly La Stupenda.
Todos sus años fueron increíbles. Con los cambios físicos en la voz propios de la naturaleza humana. Pero, al compás, el maestro Kraus fue desarrollando con su voz los matices de sus personajes.
Kraus fue único y, gracias a las grabaciones en vivo, eterno.
Será difícil que alguien pueda superarle en su repertorio. De momento, no ha habido nadie.

Por supuesto. Los que cantan ese rol deben tener esas notas. A algunos les salen mejor que otros, pero sin ésos agudos no pueden cantar Puritani.

I think this recording was recorded more adjacent to Kraus. That's why it sounds like Kraus' voice is larger than Sutherland's
+Jason L Maybe, but, nevertheless, Kraus' voice was absolutely surrounding, light, clear and strong in high notes.
The mic was overhead the stage at some distance, about the same distance from both singers. This is not a studio recording.
actually Kraus sound pretty loud in the opera house. Way louder than many people think.
Kraus en vivo llenaba el teatro. Sabía proyectar como nadie. Voces más pesadas como por ejemplo la del bajobaritenor tenía menos sonoridad que la de Kraus en vivo.
In the opera house, Kraus did not have a huge voice but it was not small. His voice carried very well and was always well projected. His high notes were always very well heard and cut through the orchestra like a sharp sword. In the 60's and 70's he had a bigger voice than Pavarotti's, and Pavarotti did sing a lot with Sutherland during the same time. Remember that Kraus did sing Alfredo opposite to Callas Violeta in Traviata. It was a total success. Callas spoke very well of Kraus.
Sutherland sounds like he sang eating a cupcake... dull and weak voice in the low register, no chest register, but good high notes. Kraus is a laser here, the direct, crystal clear voice of him.

Still, he was in his right to ask for it... Decca didn't treat Kraus very well in the past (something he experienced during those recordings), so he had a reason to be guarded about distribution in Spain.

Ah, the sad thing is that Decca and the Bonynges TRIED to get Kraus to record Puritani with her--the entire fault is his. He insisted on a contract in which his own Spanish label (Carillon Records) would get distribution rights in Spain for any Decca recordings he made. Since there already was a Spanish Decca (all those wonderful zarzuela recordings with Lorengar and Berganza), Decca refused, and Kraus wouldn't budge. Foolish, foolish decision.

Kraus was by far the loudest tenor I have ever heard on stage (that includes Giacomini). No wonder he kills Sutherland who did not have a big voice at all.

Lauri Volpi had a louder and bigger voice. However, those high notes by Kraus were like a laser beam through the theather.

Sutherland’s entrance is as droopy and uninteresting as it is possible to get. The pulse and tempo stops. I kept going only to hear her match Kraus’s D-flat.

Nonsense, Pavarotti sings high notes in the duet live in falsett, he hadn't the technique which Kraus had and comes only with great pressure to the high C. Kraus hadn't any problems with the notes above C. Kraus was outstanding as Arturo, Edgardo, Tonio and Duca. Pavarotti is overrated, played not in the same league than Kraus, Bergonzi and Gedda.

@@pavarotti744 Precisamente la línea de canto de Pavarotti era anárquica, su voz era muy bella pero precisamente no era un cantante que se caracterizara por respetar las indicaciones de muchas partituras. Por ejemplo el comienzo de A te o cara, la partitura indica que hay que cantarla piano, cosa que Pavarotti no hace. Por cierto, Kraus tiene el récord de cantar 19 años seguidos esta ópera. Cosa insólita ya que la gran mayoría de los tenores la tienen en repertorio unos 6 o 7 años como máximo, debido a su dificultad. Pavarotti no la cantó ni cinco años. Técnicamente no hay color entre uno y otro.
There is no doubt that Sutherland's best years were the late 50's to the late 60's. After that time the voice lost some of its brilliance and developed a somewhat mushy middle register.
This is Joan at her best, though the recording does her no favours.

Pavarotti buscaba el efecto pero no sabía cantar con la elegancia y las indicaciones de la partitura de Bellini. Si no sabes de música cállate.

Kraus was a very great tenor but he's yelling the high notes here. Sutherland sings them. On limited mic technology like this yelling always comes off more immediate because the ability to capture overtones is lost. Sutherland was the goddess of overtones and never had to sing loud. But in the back of the theatre patrons were absolutely washed with radiant sound. Never been anyone like her.
Macho Voce ...define "yelling". Kraus is anything BUT yelling. Yes, he got nasal later on, yes he was pretty much unemotional. But he did not yell. Never.
I agree, I've heard better high Ds from him... they sound troppo bianca here...
