Sutherland is the great vocal artist of our time.. she sang only to me in the top row in Covent Garden, 1985, she sings to the space, easily , with great round tone, half voice... not to a microphone in her face... if you don't get a consonant here or there, a modified vowel, get over it... she was projecting, a genius...
they had great technique great voices!!i saw them in this performance in the early 80s!!(long time ago!!) but also they had magic!! an ingredient in opera singers lacking in today opera world.

I attended one of the performances in this series, Sutherland’s comeback at the Met. I actually had to join a class at Ramapo College to get a ticket because everything else was sold out! But it was worth all the effort.
Two of the greatest Bel Canto performers still in amazing form in their mid-50’s. This memorable 1983 performance at the Met might be the greatest Lucia ever recorded. Sutherland’s mad scene is beyond belief. I should know. I have watched it at least 50 times and it gives me goose bumps everytime!

¿Atribuye el exceso de repertorio al deterioro precoz de su voz? Yo tengo entendido que la responsable fue la presunta dermatomiositis que padeció, una enfermedad autoinmune que ataca a los músculos de diversas zonas (a las cuerdas vocales y a los aparatos fonador y respiratorio, en el caso de la Diosa Griega). De hecho, se cree que la medicación que tomaba para combatir sus efectos (corticoides e inmunosupresores) le provocó una cardiopatía que la conduciría irremediablemente a la muerte. Se me hace complicado pensar que alguien con semejante dominio de la técnica vocal pusiese en riesgo la integridad de su instrumento. Y sí, sin duda, esos roles que cita usted (así como muchos otros) estarán marcados de por vida con su sello. En cierto modo es lamentable, porque hace que, cada vez que la oigo, suponga para mí la versión definitiva, imperecedera e inmejorable de aquello que canta, lo que no me permite apreciar de forma objetiva a otras grandes intérpretes. Supongo que será el precio a pagar por idolatrarla sin condición...
@@Evvivaverdi Para mi ha sido la más grande. Pero cantó desde Rossini a Puccini a Donizetti. Además de muchísimas funciones. Eso pasa factura. Además de la medicación su problema sentimental con el desalmado de Onassis. Su voz era única. Por desgracia no pude verla en vivo. Un tío mío sí. Me contaba q escucharla en vivo era una experiencia celestial. Para mí ha sido única. No malinterprete mis palabras.
No las malinterpreto, descuide; sencillamente me interesaba conocer su opinión. Creo que estos intercambios de experiencias y conocimientos no hacen sino enriquecer. Desde luego, el tormento vivido junto a ese monstruo tuvo que mermar, y mucho, las cualidades de su voz. La ausencia de una figura paterna en su niñez es la causa más que probable de sus amoríos con Meneghini y Onassis. Síndrome de Electra, ¿no es así? No sabe lo que daría por poder hablar con alguien que hubiese, si no conocido, sí al menos escuchado o visto en persona alguna vez a Maria. Si no es indiscreción, ¿podría saber qué más le contó su tío acerca de ella?
@@moltedo37 Alfredo Kraus Austrian-Spanish born in the Canary Islands. At the time along with Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras were the finest light lyric tenors of the day.

Note that Sutherland is 56 here and yet sounds as gorgeous and po0werful as she did in her debut in this role at Covent Garden 23 years earlier. Her technical skills in preserving her voice and keeping the rounded full tones needed to express the music are a marvel.
They are almost exactly the same age. Sutherland born 26. Kraus born 27. Where keeping the voice intact, Kraus was a magician. A young Werther in his late sixties who only aged when you met him without make-up back stage. The voice was as fresh as ever.
Wilson Watt, Joan dal vivo era diversa. La voce riultava limpida è cristallina mentre il microfono la fa sentire intubata ma non era così. L'ho ascoltata dal vivo spesso e qualcuno puo' confermarlo. Lui canta molto col naso e dal vivo aveva un timbro senile e nasale. Inoltre Joan aveva il triplo della voce di Kraus.
Masterful singing by Kraus. I simply don’t get Sutherland’s voice. I can barely distinguish a word or two, and I’m fluent in Italian. Her diction is terrible.
Of course, she is not Latin! She is from Australia and all persons know. I am Italian, but as opera's lover I greatly appreciate her in this Lucia. And as an opera's lover I Know by memory all the text. Sorry for my English.
Sorry Raffaele- what nonsense! She’s got a unique voice, but her diction simply sucks. And there is no excuse for this. You wouldn’t accept this from any other singer, I’m sure.

Kraus bravissimo ma la Shuterland non si può sentire. Biascica, impasta, sbava... l’opera non è un alternarsi di vocalizzi. Non capirò mai come Lucia - che lei uccide molte volte ben prima delle imposte nozze - possa essere considerata un suo cavallo di battaglia
Per la signora è forse un po' tardi e fa rimpiangere la stupenda e insuperata Lucia del 1972 ( dove anche la pronuncia è decisamente migliore) per il signore anche.... Acuti un po' taglienti e la sua prudenza (doverosa) per cantare tutto giusto riduce l' interpretazione ad una superficialità insolita per lui.... Naturalmente parlo pensando a quando questi signori erano all'apice e di quanto di bello ci hanno regalato in precedenza. Buona prestazione ma senza nessun volo.
Alfredo Kraus sounds constricted and Sutherland sings with lovely high notes beautifully articulated but her middle register sounds too masked. I saw one of these performances at the Met and this video recording is not kind. It was more exciting in the house.
DavidAsset78 I’m afraid you got it wrong. Sutherland is constricted because she cannnot pronounce The Italian properly, which it is important in Lucia. Kraus italian,on the other hand , is perfect so he can sing freely. Just one example... verrà CON TE sull’aure... she sings ... COTE... I’m italian but I prefer the clear italian of Kraus then Pavarotti. Poor Kraus he was just as good as the 3 tenors but the 3 tenors mafia ganged on him. And as Machbeth said... he was heard no more.
@@cliffgaither They probably did, but it was very bad what they did excluding him. He was much better then Carreras. I suppose, as allway it was down to money. They didn't want split 4 ways. What I like about Kraus is his clear Italian pronunciation. But for the moltitude in ecstasy at the 3 belting out. O sole mio... I don't suppose it worried them much. Apparently the fashion of singing the high notes like at the end at the end of - Nessun dorma...All'alba viinceró...VIN CE RÓ . was started by Enrico Caruso. Before him the belting out of this high notes was not shall we say.... Not cricket.
Both of these singer sounded better live than in recordings. Kraus, for instance, could make a huge, rounded sound up high, but microphones tended to make his voice sound drier. Sutherland's high register (like Birgit Nilsson's) could give recording engineers fits.
Vocalmente bravi entrambi, ma niente più di questo. Che peccato non leggere nei loro occhi (e nella loro voce) un’espressione di autentico trasporto. Dove sono le “amare lagrime”? Dove sono i “sospiri ardenti”? Non vedo niente di tutto ciò, specie nel tenore, che sembra pensare solo alla propria voce. Il soprano, un po’ meglio: mantiene un’espressione sognante generica, che resta identica dall’inizio alla fine. Che peccato pensare solo alle note e limitarsi a mimare le emozioni tramite il fraseggio e non sentire e non trasmettere alcun autentico sentimento!

Sutherland was truly “La Stupenda” in this her signature role. In this memorable performance at the Met (the only one I believe preserved, thankfully on DVD) she came out for a solo curtain call right after the mad scene at the end of Act III that lasted for nearly 10 minutes. She took the rare liberty of going to both sides of the massive Met stage to take her bows. The audience, probably sensing that this might be one of her last “Lucia’s”, did not want her to leave the stage. I truly envy anyone who was there on that unforgettable evening in 1983.
Poor Dame Joan should of retired in 1980. Her voice was stellar in the 50s 60s And by the mid 70s she was done. What a voice she did have. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

Note that Sutherland is 56 here and yet sounds as gorgeous and po0werful as she did in her debut in this role at Covent Garden 23 years earlier. Her technical skills in preserving her voice and keeping the rounded full tones needed to express the music are a marvel.
how you cannot notice her voice is opaque here, very different from her 1959/65 voice
Her voice is much richer than in her debut. All types of shades and colors. The top is still miraculous and intact.
They are almost exactly the same age. Sutherland born 26. Kraus born 27. Where keeping the voice intact, Kraus was a magician. A young Werther in his late sixties who only aged when you met him without make-up back stage. The voice was as fresh as ever.
Wilson Watt, Joan dal vivo era diversa. La voce riultava limpida è cristallina mentre il microfono la fa sentire intubata ma non era così. L'ho ascoltata dal vivo spesso e qualcuno puo' confermarlo. Lui canta molto col naso e dal vivo aveva un timbro senile e nasale. Inoltre Joan aveva il triplo della voce di Kraus.

Masterful singing by Kraus. I simply don’t get Sutherland’s voice. I can barely distinguish a word or two, and I’m fluent in Italian. Her diction is terrible.

Sorry Raffaele- what nonsense! She’s got a unique voice, but her diction simply sucks. And there is no excuse for this. You wouldn’t accept this from any other singer, I’m sure.

Kraus bravissimo ma la Shuterland non si può sentire. Biascica, impasta, sbava... l’opera non è un alternarsi di vocalizzi. Non capirò mai come Lucia - che lei uccide molte volte ben prima delle imposte nozze - possa essere considerata un suo cavallo di battaglia
Per la signora è forse un po' tardi e fa rimpiangere la stupenda e insuperata Lucia del 1972 ( dove anche la pronuncia è decisamente migliore) per il signore anche.... Acuti un po' taglienti e la sua prudenza (doverosa) per cantare tutto giusto riduce l' interpretazione ad una superficialità insolita per lui.... Naturalmente parlo pensando a quando questi signori erano all'apice e di quanto di bello ci hanno regalato in precedenza. Buona prestazione ma senza nessun volo.
Alfredo Kraus sounds constricted and Sutherland sings with lovely high notes beautifully articulated but her middle register sounds too masked. I saw one of these performances at the Met and this video recording is not kind. It was more exciting in the house.

I’m afraid you got it wrong. Sutherland is constricted because she cannnot pronounce The Italian properly, which it is important in Lucia. Kraus italian,on the other hand , is perfect so he can sing freely. Just one example... verrà CON TE sull’aure... she sings ... COTE... I’m italian but I prefer the clear italian of Kraus then Pavarotti. Poor Kraus he was just as good as the 3 tenors but the 3 tenors mafia ganged on him. And as Machbeth said... he was heard no more.

They probably did, but it was very bad what they did excluding him. He was much better then Carreras. I suppose, as allway it was down to money. They didn't want split 4 ways. What I like about Kraus is his clear Italian pronunciation. But for the moltitude in ecstasy at the 3 belting out. O sole mio... I don't suppose it worried them much. Apparently the fashion of singing the high notes like at the end at the end of - Nessun dorma...All'alba viinceró...VIN CE RÓ .
was started by Enrico Caruso. Before him the belting out of this high notes was not shall we say.... Not cricket.
Both of these singer sounded better live than in recordings. Kraus, for instance, could make a huge, rounded sound up high, but microphones tended to make his voice sound drier. Sutherland's high register (like Birgit Nilsson's) could give recording engineers fits.
Her weak middle register, or absence thereof, was a weakness throughout her career.

Vocalmente bravi entrambi, ma niente più di questo. Che peccato non leggere nei loro occhi (e nella loro voce) un’espressione di autentico trasporto. Dove sono le “amare lagrime”? Dove sono i “sospiri ardenti”? Non vedo niente di tutto ciò, specie nel tenore, che sembra pensare solo alla propria voce. Il soprano, un po’ meglio: mantiene un’espressione sognante generica, che resta identica dall’inizio alla fine. Che peccato pensare solo alle note e limitarsi a mimare le emozioni tramite il fraseggio e non sentire e non trasmettere alcun autentico sentimento!

La Sutherland aveva 30 anni di carriera qui...
Sutherland was truly “La Stupenda” in this her signature role. In this memorable performance at the Met (the only one I believe preserved, thankfully on DVD) she came out for a solo curtain call right after the mad scene at the end of Act III that lasted for nearly 10 minutes. She took the rare liberty of going to both sides of the massive Met stage to take her bows. The audience, probably sensing that this might be one of her last “Lucia’s”, did not want her to leave the stage. I truly envy anyone who was there on that unforgettable evening in 1983.

Poor Dame Joan should of retired in 1980. Her voice was stellar in the 50s 60s And by the mid 70s she was done. What a voice she did have. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
