- I'm critiquing your portfolios! Here is some friendly advice of getting better product design portfolios, PLUS a special MID WEIGHT designer portfolio as a comparison!
Check out Dave's Instagram at @_iamdave. Thank you so much for sending your portfolio in!
Thank you to everyone who submitted - I'll be doing more of these videos so if you'd like to submit yours for review, head over to my website to find the link.

Please keep those reviews up! They are so helpful for all of us out there who are just taking off
Looking forward to doing more!
Don't worry about the video length, I made it to the end :)
Thank you so much!
Loved it! Even though I'm almost a good 3 years out of college, it's always nice to see a clear and concise real-world example of how a portfolio should and shouldn't be. Thanks!
a tip - see more of any project before commenting (negatively). Great content, and must be very valuable for those in the trade.
Thank you so much, I don't think the video is too long. I am going to sent my CV and portfolio to you once I finish them 😁
I can’t wait! Now you know the types of things I’ll be looking out for in future videos
I love it that when you scroll fast on a protfolio you make the sound of a doctor when he checks his patients
This is the most useful channel i've ever found and i can't be more thankful
Very interesting video, I liked your critiques of portfolios. I think it would be even more interesting (to me) if you critiqued the projects themselves more, and why you find them interesting or not. Cheers
Thank you! Projects will be interesting to me for very different reasons. If we have a project in need of structural packaging, then the structural packaging projects will stand out. If we need branding, then the graphics and branding work will stand out.
It depends all depends on what we’re hiring for
I am a first year graphic design major is interested in industrial design and we are just learning how to make a resume and portfolio, so tons of these tips will really help me out. thank you!
I’m so glad I can help!
Not too long for this type of "educational video" (I learnt a good amount). Very helpful seeing other people’s portfolios. More of these would be great!
Thank you! I can’t wait to do the next one
I'm working on my portfolio for my Masters. I'm coming from an engineering background but I'm a beginner when it comes to design. The things you pointed out will be really helpful. Thanks :)
I’m so glad I could help! Good luck!
@@SamDoesDesign Thank you! You've gained a new subscriber.
I am a student preparing a portfolio now. your video help me a lot!! many thanks!
I’m so glad I could help! Good luck!
These are such useful tips! I may or may not still use the portfolio template you helped me with like 3 years ago 🤫
Timeless design!
Chill out about how long the video is. Its a good watch
Haha noted! Thank you
Sam! What camera are you using to record this video?
Much love Sam, Will be going through my folio and resume and will ammend according to your pointers! Cheers!
Thank you so much for sending it in!
how would you advise picking personal projects to develop a portfolio? my current role is sort of related to what I want to do in the future, I'm still learning design skills but I feel like my portfolio needs more and picking projects seems like a mine field!
That’s a great question! I would say make sure you only show your best work, and make sure the projects you show include all of your skills
It was both informative and entertaining. Just friendly critique, sometimes you are going from page to page too quickly and it is hard to watch and listen the same time. If you cut out these parts you might have the video shorter as well.
Great idea! Thanks for your feedback
Wrote about two pages of notes for doing my Portfolio so thanks!
So glad I could help! Good luck!
Don't mind the video length mate, i enjoy your content and find it so useful as an Industrial Designer :) I'd love to get my Portfolio reviewed too, when are you gonna do the next review? Thanks and keep it up ;)
Thank you! I’m deciding how regular to do these... maybe once a month?
@@SamDoesDesign Once per month sounds good, and you can make the video as long as you want ;)
2nd Portfolio goes to my University... Was a bit spooked to see that
Small world!
This video is so useful thanks and in the UK when is the time that design firms start to launch their placement programmes? I've started looking and can't find one which is like the one you got, maybe they haven't started releasing them yet?
Different companies will be looking at different times, but many try to coincide with the universities, so potentially a September start? Keep an eye out!
Great video! Very interesting to see how you evaluate the portfolios. But you say you don't want to read the text. Does it mean it shouldn't be there or would you read more in detail at a later point if you are interested in the candidate?
Maybe that’s just a bad trait of mine haha! I would potentially read through it after finalising one or two candidates. But the chances are, I wouldn’t need to read those candidate’s text as the projects would have been explained in the images.
If i can chime in, we also look at portfolios this way at my job in industrial design, and when we downselect to a few candidates, then we might read the texts a bit but we usually go straight to a phone call. No time to waste, and a good portfolio tells 90% of the story through visuals.
Very helpful video. If they are willing, maybe you can post a link to their online portfolios. It could be a good reference. Thank You
I’d be happy to share the online portfolios that they mentioned in their CVs, but I had to cover them up because they also included their phone numbers.
I hope the next batch of submissions blues out the personal info so I can leave the public info!
Hi Sam, I love your work and your videos! They are very helpful and inspiring. I am currently working on my website and I plan to use it to replace my pdf portfolio. However, I have second thoughts after seeing this video. Do companies usually prefer pdf portfolio to a portfolio website?
Website portfolios are great but sometimes companies will ask for PDF portfolios to keep on record. I’d recommend keeping your PDF as a backup!
Thank you!!
Look whose not sick anymore !! 🙌🙌🙌
Ready to go! 🙌
This is a great video, so helpful as a first year student
Thank you! I’m so glad I could help!
What should we use to evaluate our level on specifics software ? :)
I’ll be able to tell from your projects! I would recommend having a list of software that you can use, and I’ll be able to guess your skill level from the portfolio. I hope that helps!
I'd refrain from self-assessing your softwares skills, because everytime we see someone that's auto proclaimed ''expert'' or ''advanced'' in Solidworks or X software, that person ends up being beginner. If you're an expert, we will be able to tell, and same if you're a beginner. Too risky to evaluate yourself.
People who submit their portfolios to get critiqued on UA-cam are braver than the US marines
I filmed a new review today! I’ll be releasing it soon
Good break dwn ..well done
Thank you!
Great video ~ Thank you^^
Thanks for the critique! Scratched my masochistic designer urge for being scrutinised. Really enjoyed the first ep of this series 👌👌
Thank you for sending it in!
Helped me a lot. Thanks.
I’m so glad I could help!
Tells us we can go to his website, doesn’t leave a link for it :|
Good point! I’m still new to this whole UA-cam thing. You can find it by searching Sam Does Design, and I’ve just put it in the description too
Sam_Does_Design haha thanks! 😄

Thank you!
After watching this I see how much mistakes that I do LOL :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Practice makes better!
Video length is good
Noted, thank you!
great video
Thank you!
Thanks Sam, that was really useful, watched it all. I am editing my portfolio now so I would love you to take a look :D awesome video
Thank you! I’m so glad I could help! Check out my website to see how to upload 👌
Why is this not in 4K?
No one wants to see my face in 4k.
Eryk Jeziorski he should have borrowed my camera instead
Come visit London and we’ll use both!
Are u Art Director?
I’m a product designer who also selects the portfolios to show our CEO at the consultancy I work at
I don’t get it, why don’t you ever read the portfolio, how do you know anything about the projects and how he has solved the problem. You’re only looking at the portfolio superficially. How it looks is all that matters
Good portfolios tell the story of the projects both instantly and visually. That includes the backstory, research, testing, and outcome.
If companies have 100 portfolios to look at, they won’t have time to read all of the text.
I spent 30 minutes on 4 portfolios in this video which is way longer than in the real world.
If i can chime in, we also look at portfolios this way at my job in industrial design, and when we downselect to a few candidates, then we might read the texts a bit but we usually go straight to a phone call. No time to waste, and a good portfolio tells 90% of the story through visuals.
Great video, i enjoyed it alot, and would like to hear from you about my portfolio, i had sent my portfolio on your instagram, please have a look.
good video, nice idea, but couldn't finish it because you mouth smack a LOT and very often :( maybe try editing audio to erase those sounds?
Duly noted! Living and learning
1st port folio..individual can not draw very well. Exposed...by poor hand drawing. Hmmm
