This man is a gem, every adhd afflicted person hopes to reach the level of organization, success and self understanding that Devin has learned to do. You are a role model more than you think man.
Definitely! The main reason I grew to be a Townsend fanboy was how different all the albums are and this 'trilogy' of albums certainly sounds like it'll be exactly that.
I do wonder where he'll go from here once those projects are under his belt, once this creative era comes to a close. But I guess that with Devin we can always count on being surprised. Who knows, maybe he finally gets down to writing that one acoustic record he's been mentioning throughout the years (Garden Music/Thank You) given his current experiences with PowerNerd - going further down the rabbit hole of simpler musical statements. I'd be really interested in that.
Bloody love these chats, I think what dev prob doesn’t realise that so many people resonate with what he‘s saying (saying this as a guy that feels like my mind is being read and read out in a super eloquent way) … fookin love you Mr T !
Brother, you nailed it. There's so many of us going through that(55 this year). Social media is great and terrible for everything you've just mentioned.
I have no idea how Dev can deal with four big projects simultaneously, but it is really admirable. I'm at the end of my uni studies, so that's basically only one big project left, and shit feels overwhelming at times hehe.
Dev somehow seems otherworldly to me so I tell myself that's why he's so wise with all this stuff xD ...anyway @Luusika, you're amazing and you got this!
Feel ya Dev on social media. I do social media for my day job and I’m so sick of the endless grind and the “marketing” and the “LOOK WHAT IM DOING” of it all like you mentioned. And if sucks because it’s clearly also an addiction and habit for me though at the same time and work doesn’t help. Cant cold turkey it or limit myself cause it’s my job. Anyways, can’t wait to hear power nerd and see the art that Travis did.
Jesus H. Christ are you me? I swear your mind seems to work the exact same as mine. Whatever neurotypical means . . . Maybe that's why I dig you so much?! Keep rockin dude!
Just commented this exact thing, we put (rightly so :-)) dev on a pedestal , at the same time I think many creatives go through the exact same emotions, we‘re just priveledged to have the man making art :-)
1:18 - Hell yeah, Dev. NoMeansNo rocks, it's my favourite punk band. Btw, thanks for the updates. These became my favourite "podcast" of the week, even though you never really called them so.
Awesome as always Dev! Powernerd sounds incredibly exciting to me! From the logo, the art, the music... I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT!! Much much love and more to you and yours. Enjoy your vocals week. I hope it all flows and makes you happy 🤘💙🤘
I totally understand the crying in yer 50s. May be blend of anxiety and emotional expansion. When young, we are invincible, but when 50, we've been steadily beat down over life. Suppression will definitely do it too. It is weird...surreal. Paralysing at times. Best wishes being optimal!
I get what you're saying: My love for change-ups and skills is still there, but I am seeking out new stuff that makes me feel. Good luck and breathe. It will be great.
Seasons come and go. There seems to be alot of stuff happening at the surface in the world, but what is invisible to most is the spirit behind the events. We never know at the time the struggles are giving us the strength to withstand anything that befronts us. Maybe PowerNerd can be a dialogue of the common man who plays his stuff straight, and the craziness of day to day.
Really insightful update - can't wait to hear all of the upcoming work. Definitely feels like Ki, Addicted, Ghost, Deconstruction part 2 in some way or another.
Acceptance. I think that is the reason why you break up while singing the placeholders. Subconsciously you are accepting that you have been suppressing the emotions and you are letting go. 😊
Every single album you do is utterly different to the previous one, so if you want to do a simple, straight ahead, four on the floor heavy rock n roll album, why TF not! I personally cannot wait....
I believe that your Power Nerd record may be "simple" because you have gotten to a point of your writing somwething that you know exactly how and want it to sound so much you just do it. I think thats the pinical of it, it's so direct that that it exactly how it should sound. I'm excited of couse as a fan but in just as how you express how you articulate your musical vision. Love you Devin "PowerNerd" Townsend
Greeting from France ! I decided to dig into your music no long ago because something told me it was time... On one hand, I am (was) a very big fan of Fear Factory and industrial metal in general. A friend advised me at the time to take a look at SLY. I think I was still too young and brainless at the time to understand who you are. I pored over all of Burton C. Bell's side projects, happily discovering that he was capable of much more than screaming and writing dystopian lyrics. On the other hand, I'm a huge fan of Mike Oldfield whose music I've listened to since I was a baby. Today I say to myself If only an enlightened soul had pushed me more to discover you! I won't be able to explain how or why, but your music reconnects me to the child that I was (and that I must still be a little) and also touches the adult that I am. It's very special, no artist had ever made me feel like that before. When my 18 month old son will be old enough to one day ask me the question: “but who is the man with no hair that we often hear singing and screaming?”. I'd tell him something like, "It's Devin Townsend, a guy who made your dad happier in life." thank you for being here. In the meantime, if one day you come back to Paris, count me in !
Hi Dev, How are you? P.S. ... And don't forget most of us here will love you and your work, just (or not specifically "just") whatever you do. I can't speak for others, but for me you are the perfect human being for the two centries.
Im always happy when I see Devin. I dont know how you do it all Devin. Definitely a workaholic. But your music is perfection and it always touches my Soul.🥰
Stopped it at 16:37, just wanted to say, Devin if you're reading this, these reflective video updates are extremely helpful. Even though I don't know what you're talking about specifically, I can glean and apply it to myself. Thank you.
Your thoughts and words are very special to me and I take them to heart. Except when you try to prepare us for an upcoming album. You always under promise and over deliver. The emotional intent is never lost on me. Even if the intent is wrapped in metaphors and have every musical color in one composition. We are truly numbered - Cheers!!
Thank you for the idea. I really should try giving myself a hard deadline for a project from the get-go, some time. As I do most of my creative stuff sans profit, I've always approached it with 'when its done' mentality. Though it is stress free way of doing it... I actually find myself thriving creatively the most during the last couple of months of 'crunch'.
Am fine thanks Devy hope all is good with yo self x Sounds like there is raw and straight to the point energy coming to us really looking forward to the Power Nerd ❤
Not for nothing, I enjoy to this day the Punky Brüster record specifically because it sounded like you had fun and the songs still sound sick and enjoyable. I don't think Power Nerd is the same, but rooting making something in simple and driving gives me Punky Brüster tingles.
It sounds like you may be accessing that pocket of 'naiive' creativity that bands often have for the first and second record or so. It will be very interesting to see if this hypothesis plays out. Consider something like dev's Death Magnetic or Brave New World.
Listening to this description of your musical interests, I hope to god someone has shared Cardiacs with you. While you're in the middle of recording might not be the time to get into them though, it's a deep rabbit-hole.
4:21 whatever you put out, someone will love it, you have a great track record, pun intended, throughout your music career & journey. I know you must put lots of pressure on yourself… don’t do that. Then it becomes a job and rockers don’t like those lol.
Yikes....now I have no idea what to expect. As much as I love Addicted, I dislike Epicloud. I have always been hit or miss with each project because of the range of styles and vibes, but at least for me, Lightwork captured everything I love in Devin's work.....brilliant album IMO. I will keep an open mind.
The band/project era is over as far as i understand it. Devin does not want to have members (and the drama that comes with it), keeping them employed full-time and touring relentlessly to make it work. Thats how he gets burnt out.

Is anyone else as excited as I am to hear this PowerNerd stuff?
PowerNerd could be ok, I've always hated generic rock and heavy rock, I'm excited about the other projects though. :)
Definitely! The main reason I grew to be a Townsend fanboy was how different all the albums are and this 'trilogy' of albums certainly sounds like it'll be exactly that.
I'm a proud nerd that happens to love metal.
“If you’re here you may as well dig in”. Dev, you have a habit of saying exactly what I need to hear at the exact right time ❤
How fortunate we are to have UA-cam to be able to hear your thoughts. ❤
'End of a phase'...I've heard that before, in 2007 and 2017.
Creative life has a lot of phases.
I do wonder where he'll go from here once those projects are under his belt, once this creative era comes to a close. But I guess that with Devin we can always count on being surprised. We share a deadline as I've got to finish my PhD thesis in two weeks. We'll get through it!!
Please dont apologize for long updates. Explaining your process to us is almost therapeutic 😁 💜
Brother, you nailed it. There's so many of us going through that(55 this year). Social media is great and terrible for everything you've just mentioned.
Your updates provide an awesome reality slip for me in my boring everydayness.
You are a true savant 👍

That facehugger is hilarious. Best of luck finishing school, the last year whips by really fast.
Dev somehow seems otherworldly to me so I tell myself that's why he's so wise with all this stuff xD
...anyway @Luusika, you're amazing and you got this!
I'm convinced Devin is not of this world. His music proves that.
Oh dude, don't go into procurement for an appliance company. Makes Devin's project work look MUCH funner.
Passion is a wonder, wonderful thing!

How hard is it to accept that something simple can be beautiful? Take care brother 👍✌😎
Nobility in simplicity

I love that he referenced NoMeansNo, they were a massive influence on my music too, probably up there with Voivod, Cardiacs and Cheer-Accident.😊
If you're ever in Vegas bud, I'd be happy to bring you out for some dirt biking antics.
