Playing for Hawthorn reserves, he took one of the finest marks ever on the wing of lakeside oval. It was broadcast live on the Sunday..from memory…possibly army reserve cup
@@jonburrows9816 I wish I could remember, Jon. It was on the commentary side, right below a camera, which pivoted down to capture the mark. I remember him flying above a mass of players. It was a portent of things to come.
@@AM-xl6ro Hi, many thanks for your reply. I am a huge Ablett Snr fan. I remember his entire career. Best player I have seen. What he's done off field, he's got to live with that. But I am constantly looking for more footage as I collect highlights of his from his Haw days to when he retired back in 1997. If you have any more Ablett stories please let me know. Thanks again. 👍
Soccer is the greatest sport on Earth and is massive in over 240 countries. Afl is big in 4 Australian States. Soccer will be the number 1 sport in Australia by 2050 khdgcb
@@mufc510 Granted, soccer is definitely a good live game ... not too good on the screen (can't see players running into position) ... amazing tackle positional game. AFL has that and contact and marking and bouncing and handball and endurance and strategy with interchange players ... and it plays for two hours of game play. It's a high scoring game too... never a nil all draw. The fans always have something to cheer about ... it's high intense action from start to finish.
@@mufc510 Australia and NZ are remote. However, AFL is getting out and getting more and more countries are following it every year. Soccer is the most played football in the world and will always be. However, I don't think it will ever be number 1 in Australia, nor NZ. Currently it is a distant 4th behind AFL, NRL and Union. Union is too big in NZ and All Backs are just too strong world-wide for Soccer to replace in it, either.

I was told some years ago Gary while playing for Hawthorn was living in a poky flat in Hawthorn sharing with 2 other Hawthorn players and absolutely hated it! Yearned to be back up the bush!😒🏉🎽🌾🌾🌾🏚️
He left because he got into trouble with the law several times, including a serious assault, and he was uncomfortable with the coach Alan Jeans who was a senior copper.
Overrated ????. Still laughing out loud. 2nd best that put on a pair of footy boots. The best was Leigh Matthews for the Hawks, and that's coming from a Cats supporter.
In the 1982 Qualifying final, the 3 Hawthorn emergencies that day were: Dermott Brereton, Chris Langford & Gary Ablett Senior.....True story.

Hi, I noticed your comment. Was the mark you saw in 1982?

Imagine Ablett snr in those great hawthorn sides of the 80’s
He would of been named as an emergency
And then getting junior on father son.

Sandy got that one wrong. St Kilda was actually his 6th game, not debut!
